Online classes: admittedly these are very, very long and kind of boring. They are what they are. In-car lessons: these went well. Always started on time and finished on time. The quality of instructors has a quality mix to it, but most were very good. Also, if you like an instructor, you can try to schedule more lessons with that specific instructor, which was helpful. It can be difficult to find lessons when and where you want, but if you book far enough ahead of time, you can generally find several reasonable options. General communications: Every time we called the company for help, they were very responsive and always friendly. Overall, I would say our experience was very positive, and I would use them again if I need to and would recommend them. read more

It is almost impossible to schedule in-car sessions at times when children are not in school. Unfortunately I was unable to see said schedule until I had paid for the full package, at which time I realized no times would ever work. Also, the police officer who did the one and only session with my son had to ask him about his experience level which he didn't answer well so they basically drove around a parking lot for 30 min. THEN because the other teen who was scheduled to share the session did not show up, my son didn't even get full credit for the session and was told he could "just hop in any any in-car session" later that day. Waaaaaay too complicated. It's a cool idea to have cops teaching teens to drive but execution leaves much to be desired. Maybe a homeschooling family would find this a more usable product. read more

I signed my son up for an I Drive Smart online course and driving package which started the following Monday. He took one class and said it was mind-numbing (they watched videos and talked about the yield sign, in addition to other things). He said he was following along in the book while the instructor talked, and the book actually had more detail than the instructor. While MD and VA have no choice but to take a class, because we live in DC and he already has his learner's permit and read the entire drivers manual for DC, I called to see if I could get my money back for the in-person portion of the class and just do the driving portion. I was told that because he attended a class that it wasn't possible (no flexibility on the "terms"), and that I could only get refunded for the drivers portion, which is what we really wanted. So, it cost me $299 for a $9.99 book.  I was disappointed with their lack of flexibility. I asked them if they could instead refund me for the class and allow him to take the drivers portion--or put the money from the class toward the driver's portion, so we'd get something (even one or two driving sessions) for the $299 I paid. I was told classes were in high demand; however, as of the day before, there were two classes that were still open, so it's not like he took someone's spot. I know they're a business, but most businesses will work with you and show some flexibility--especially when someone is disappointed in their product and is asking for only a partial refund. I cannot say enough good things about IDriveSmart. They taught my two stepkids to drive in high school and then when this middle aged, city dwelling mama moved to the suburbs, I ended up calling them too. I had originally paid $800 for private lessons with another school who didn't teach me to drive at all (after 7 private hours of in car lessons, I still didn't know how to reverse!) but ended up redoing my entire program with idrivesmart. When I explained what had happened to me to my instructor on my first day, he had me do nothing BUT reverse for an hour to make sure I felt comfortable. This driving school has created 3 safe, confident drivers, including me, even though I was very scared of driving. The instructors are professional, serious, and thorough and do an amazing job. I can't recommend this company enough. It's not cheap but you get what you pay for and in this case, it's retired + off-duty police officers who will teach your kid (or adult) how to drive SAFELY. I've been on the road for a few months now and I wish more people would go to a school like this. read more

I'll preface this review that I attended I Drive Smart in 2007 and cannot claim to know if and how the school has changed since. I had an overwhelmingly negative experience with this driving school. The in-class portion was very little instruction about actually driving - all I remember is the terrifying stories and gory pictures the instructors showed us in an almost 'scared straight' method. I took this class in high school. I am now 30 years old and avoid driving at all costs because of how much fear and anxiety this class instilled in me. I know two other people who attended and also now experience severe driving anxiety as a result of this 'teaching' tactic. I also distinctly recall the teacher instructing us that, "if you are a woman and get pulled over, you should cry to attempt to get out of a ticket." This seems highly inappropriate advice, especially coming from an actual LEO. The instructor also used an opioid 'lollipop' in class. He was open about this fact and presumably driving himself to and from class while under the influence of a controlled substance. Now onto the in-car portion. I was young and still very nervous about driving for my first session, and the instructor had me drive down Georgia Ave, in traffic, in the rain. It was an unreasonable exercise for a driver who is still learning the basics of the mechanics of driving a car, and a nerve-wracking experience. I'll reiterate that I Drive Smart may have changed and improved over the years - I hope it has - but I cannot in good conscience recommend that anyone else attend this school. Just to pre-empt the "you should have raised your concern sooner" response that other folks appear to have received: I was a kid when I took this class. I think I'm a pretty reasonable consumer. But when my son couldn't find his I Drive Smart instructor at the designated meeting place (first time he tried this location), there was no obvious way for him to get in touch with the teacher. It was after hours and the IDS website stated that phonelines close after 4:30 PM. So he was penalized as being absent. A very well stated request my me for a one time forgiveness to the staff/manager gave a very generic "sorry" and "it's penalizing to the other kids who make it to the class on time". Oh, this was a woman named Christen. This was the first time my son had such an incident, and he was trying his best to do the right thing. I think the response was pretty heartless. I'd advise caution to anyone considering these people for their children's lessons. Don't expect a "human" response from management. Disappointed. This was a great program for behind-the-wheel. The BTW program is not to learn to drive, it replaces the old model of the coaches teaching drivers ed in the high school. The officers set my (typical teenage skeptical attitude) son straight and taught him good skills and persuaded him about taking a defensive driving attitude. We live in south Alexandria and often had to travel farther than ideal to get to evening/weekend sessions, but it was worth it. The seventh lesson is the driving test, so you don't have to take your kid to the DMV to do the test. Leave plenty of extra time before the lesson, because if you are late, the car will leave without you and you will have to pay $99 to buy another session. I will do this with my two younger kids; it's worth the extra cost over in-school classes. read more

We live in Poolesville MD . We needed a safe displined organized school to send our new driver to . It's not like when I got my license 35 years ago . The instructor was always on time and extremely patient with our son . He talked to us in length after some of the driving and there was mutual trust between Parent and Instructor and of course our son . When he tested after the driving he passed the course . No star is accurate. The online course is sufficient but the cost of the entire online course and the 3lessons is exorbitant. While the technicians on the phone are fine nobody talks to each other in the firm therefore my son was left alone for two hours when his driver Ed teacher could not teach him to drive his first lesson. He had a paper copy of his permit but the company had a hard copy of the permit on their file and it was approved. The driver said he needed to see the hardcopy. but I had gotten assurances that the paper copy was fine. Because my son is in a boarding high school in another state , I had his hardcopy. Great concept to have cops (ex cops) teach new drivers but according to my daughter, friends and family these guys suck the joy right out of the souls of these children by leading the classes with fear tactics for hours on end. It's one thing to share stories of caution and give a sense of reality that driving is a huge responsibility, It's another thing to scare the living daylights out of children so they're petrified to get behind a wheel. I witnessed a driving instructor dress down a parent for not having the child's learners permit and refused every option the mom suggested to get the permit to the instructor. The mother was being very kind and she was faced with an extremely agitated and inflexible cop. Also, my daughter was in a car with a male student driver and said she was ignored the entire time as the cop and the male driver discussed sports and completely left her out of the conversation for 90 minutes. An extremely uncomfortable situation for her. The entire experience has been terrible, if you have a daughter, who is looking to be taught properly, treated properly, and have a good experience. This is not the company for you. Seek to spend your $600 elsewhere. Zero customer service and angry, agitated cops. read more

Overly priced. Will not teach you how to drive. No flexibility in scheduling sessions. The classroom portion was garbage and the behind the wheel was even worse. Please do not rely on them to actually teach you how to drive. Also, do not have any emergencies prior to any sessions because you cannot reschedule without them charging you additional fees ie over $100. One star is being too nice. I put two of my sons through this program at the same time and wasted thousands of dollars doing so. I emphasize that they truly do not teach you how to drive at all. I took my class when i was 15 and got my permit when i was 18. When i went to take my license test at 19 they said they had no record of my class and expected me to find my copy of the answer sheet of my test from 4 years ago. They are stupid. They blamed me for taking the class when it wasn't online yet. Sorry i was born before the internet became useful. Idiots. They cant find their copy. With Maryland's graduated licensing system, driver's ed courses require thirty hours of classroom instruction and six hours of Behind the Weel (BTW) insruction. At IDS, this is split into 10 3 hour classroom sessions, and 3 2 hour BTW sessions. The classroom part of the instruction was great, with instructors who really seemed to care. It wasn't total blood and gore pics, but there were definitely serious messages they needed to get across. Point taken. Some were more serious than others, but all were great. I give the classroom instructors, who are all police officers, mad props. The BTW instructors were, quite frankly, the opposite. They would frequently show up late. In addition, when I was driving, they would YELL at me to take some other course of action. When I was first learning how to drive, this made me needlessly nervous. When asking questions, they would take a condescending tone; one even ordered me to pull over. I wasn't being argumentative at all. They take the "I'm a cop, listen to me" thing a little too seriously. So, 1 star for BTW, 5 stars for classroom. Equals 3 stars. read more

We had a lengthy conversation and happy to say that all my concerns will be addressed with the staff members and my suggestions incorporated in to the training. If you already had a driver's license, and it expired more than one year ago, I don't recommend IDS' "In-Class" lessons, which I felt wasted my time and money. (The "Behind the Wheel" (BTW) sessions are definitely worth it.) The in-class lessons are geared toward teens, beating them over the head with "don't drink/do drugs/text/talk on phone and drive" messages. This is necessary for most. But if you're older, you should know better, in which case you could skip straight to the BTW lessons. These last two hours, you use their cars, and you can schedule to meet the police officer at about a dozen designated locations throughout the area. They go over parallel parking, two-point turns, helpful hints for passing your test, etc. Cons: * 3 hour classes with short breaks (bring drink and snack). * Course book has many typos in it, which makes you question its content. * Some Instructors seem to be too concerned with "looking cool" in front teens (making jokes, showing funny YouTube videos). I appreciated the instructors who didn't take any crap, telling them often "put your phones away/Kindles away/heads off the table/no sleeping/no talking." * At this time, IDS does not let you rent their cars for use during the MVA road skills test (they did do this at one time, but have stopped). Pros: * Good location right in Rockville Town Square, which is Metro accessible. * Taught by police officers. * They make sure you get a different police officer for each BTW session, so you get a different perspective and comments on your skills. * I've heard this is the best driving school in Montgomery County. read more

Watch out Washington, there's gonna be a new driver on the road! As some of you may know, Maryland has a graduated licensing system. First you get a learner's permit, then a provisional license and finally your full license. In order to graduate from the learner's to the provisional, all new drivers in Maryland must take 30 hours of classroom instruction on driving from a certified school and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction from a certified driving school. I Drive Smart is one of those schools and has various locations in Maryland. The teaching is done by active or retired cops. I've taken I Drive Smart's classroom courses (and will be starting the behind-the-wheel classes, although I've already driven with my learner's for 10 months now) and they're pretty good. I started taking them well after I started learning how to drive, so a lot of it was stuff I already knew. If you have never driven before though, then I Drive Smart will definitely learn you good. The instructors I've had are friendly and funny and make the classes go by fast. My only complaint is that the instructors don't do much to make sure people are paying attention. People play games on their phones and stuff. It's their loss (and their family's $600 loss) if they don't want to pay enough attention to at least pass the tests, but I feel that the instructors could do more to keep people focused. I recently took I Drive Smart's Manual Transmission Training. I went in with a decent understanding of how manual transmissions work, but very little on-hands practice or actually training (maybe a total of an hour spread over the better part of a decade). I left feeling confident that I could manage a manual transmission in traffic, start on an incline, etc., which was a huge improvement and removed a lot of my stress about moving to another country and purchasing a manual transmission vehicle. My instructor, Jim Main, was a great teacher. Very patient, friendly, and encouraging but also not afraid of calling me out on my many mistakes. I received a reminder email several days before my class with instructions to the location. I had no problems finding it, and Jim was there waiting for me when I arrived. I have no experience with their other offerings, but my experience with this particular course was an excellent one and I would recommend I Drive Smart without hesitation to anyone in the DMV area that wants to learn to drive a manual transmission vehicle. read more

Last night I dropped my kid off at the school entrance as identified in the description 15 minutes early. She stood there waiting. ..no car. I tried calling the company and closed at 4:30?? I quickly sent an email- and not contacted until this morning by email. They claim even though they say at BCC, the car doesn't meet on BCC campus but on the road - not visible from The actual school entrance at that address. So, my gripe is- no way for me to contact them and they do not contact me? How am I supposed to be okay with this? You should have people available if you are scheduling during those times. I was a Mom reluctant to begin the process of driving with my teen, and did quite a bit of research before choosing a school for him. Every single parent with whom I spoke who had used I Drive Smart, gave them rave reviews. The class was great - just the right amount of time, materials and every day was a new instructor, so my son got different perspectives from each of the teachers. The behind the wheel training was equally as good as in the classroom. Each instructor gave valuable advice, and I was very impressed with the amount of time they spent speaking with me following the lesson. They were in no hurry to leave, and offered good suggestions on the areas in which he needed to work, and how to best practice driving with him. The fact that each person involved in my son's training was either retired or active duty from the police made me feel very comfortable. I would highly recommend this school, and am awaiting the fall schedule to get my younger son started with I Drive Smart. read more

I didn't expect to write a review of a driving school, but here we are... I signed up for the Manual Transmission class as a refresher. I hadn't driven a stick shift in 10+ years but I'm interested in buying a manual and wanted to to get some practice and instruction before going on a test drive. My instructor (Jason) did a great job of explaining how the transmission works and giving me a lot of practical advice on driving a manual in normal city traffic. We practiced a lot of useful techniques like starting from a stop on an incline (with a car behind me). The instructor was very patient, even when I stalled the engine a few times or forgot I was in neutral when the light turns green. The class is far from cheap, but it was a great value. I now have much more confidence to test drive (and hopefully buy) a stick shift. read more

I've been driving for about 15 years now and decided it was time to learn how drive a manual transmission car. My instructor, Mark, was super friendly and patient which helped me eliminate any nerves I had. He was such a great teacher and I pretty much nailed everything in the 90-min session. Only time I stalled out was when I had to stop and start on a hill, but that wasn't too bad. Also, I Drive Smart was so accommodating, I could tell customer satisfaction was a big priority for them. Their manual transmission car got into an accident and they proactively called me to let me know they had to reschedule my lesson due to the car being in the shop for repairs. They also offered to pick me up for my lesson instead of me having to come to them to apologize for the inconvenience. Great business. I would highly recommend them for anyone learning to drive.They're a bit more expensive than some other driving schools, but it's worth it. read more

They were good on the front/purchase end but I was disappointed that after they failed on the latter portion, they would not issue a refund. Worst experience of my life. If I could give this organization no stars I would. I came home after every session and cried because the instructors were so mean to me. They have no consideration or people skills. I developed severe anxiety around driving after attending only four sessions with them. I would not recommend this service to any human being. My driving actually regressed throughout the sessions. The instructors were only mildly knowledgable and often repeated themselves. I was extremely unhappy and stressed out throughout the whole process. I do understand that driving is extremely serious but I do not see the purpose in stressing out to the point that I had to quit the service and begin another. The instructors were extremely mean and inconsiderate. Please do not torture your children with this experience. In response to Patrick- I trained in fall 2015. So sorry if my review gave the appearance of multiple instructors I was trying to protect identities but I'll go ahead and let you know that yes I trained with one female instructor for four sessions before becoming so upset I had to transfer to a much better and superior service. read more

My son and daughter both took the driving course at IDS. I was very impressed with my son's instruction, both classroom and on the road. My daughter took the course over a 2 summer period, planning to take her final driving test with the State by the third year. This seemed not to be unusual in a suburb with families spending summers here and the rest of the year overseas, which was her case. When she was ready to take the exam, which you now have to sign up for in advance, she made an appointment for June, hoping to get in some practice and then get her license before going back to college in August. The day we were headed off to her test, she called one more time to check she had everything she needed and was told her completion papers from IDS had not been filed, so she couldn't take the test. When we called IDS, they seemed as surprised as we were. In subsequent phone calls, they claimed she failed one of her on road driving sessions and that they couldn't file her papers. But my daughter was not aware, nor was she informed afterward or at any time that she did not complete her course up to standards. Nor in the year following the completion of her on-road training did we get any message indicating she would not be able to take the test. IDS made her take another final written test at their classroom in Rockville before they would file her completion papers. Since we needed the next available appointment, Ww had to drive to Cumberland in order to get the driver's test in before she had to go back to college in Pennsylvania. Our overall experience with IDS varied. The admin part of the program was the weakest part. I was not impressed with the way they 'took responsibility', mainly, came up with a lie about my daughter's driving, in order to cover themselves for not filing her completion papers; an error that made getting her license more stressful and very inconvenient. I think as Marylanders, we should all be annoyed at the pile of requirements forced upon parents, new drivers, and driving schools, concerning drivers licenses. Making appointments, driving to the ends of the State to take a driving test all seems like making us jump through hoops for the sake of jumping through hoops. It is just part of the over-regulation that makes out State the 4th highest taxed State in the Union. Over-taxed, and still making appointments months in advance to take a driver's test. I had enrolled in the Manual Transmission Training in preparation for renting a car in Europe, but timing didn't work out. The company did provide a refund after I informed them that I had decided to rent an automatic vehicle. There was a misunderstanding regarding a service fee, but that was later corrected. I was told that their instructors do not have any specific advice related to international driving. However, my experience is that little research and lot of patience will go far in any country. Most locals are willing to help respectful tourists. read more

I didn't trust the driving schools I was considering. I Drive Smart was the best choice in a a very long while. I was much older than my excited teen peers. Way older. Old enough to share that all their excitement was just more responsibility after all. I was old enough to share all of my mistakes but young enough that I wasn't preaching. I Drive Smart had smart and engaging instructors who didn't glamorize that responsibility. Also, the instructors were different with each class. It didn't get boring because all of the instructors brought something new to the classroom. We used i Drive Smart for our twin daughters. This service cost about twice as much as other driving schools and it was worth every penny. The courses are set up so that if a student misses a class, they can make it up at another time or location that is convenient to them, no problem. The road instructors are all police officers and very professional. Their website is useful and easy to navigate. Their cars are small, but appear to be new. My daughters have been driving for a year now and have been (knock on wood) accident free. I thoroughly endorse this company for it's professionalism and convenience. read more

For transparency's sake, I will post the timeline of my experiences with IDS. It seems from the responses to others' reviews that the folks in charge will use that to entirely discount feedback, as though the fact that it happened a long time ago is grounds to ignore it. I did the 30-hour classroom instruction back in 2010. No complaints there. I did the 6-hour behind-the-wheel instruction in the summer of 2015, and again, no complaints. If these two parts constituted the entirety of my time with IDS, I'd be much more likely to post a three-star review for an unexceptional but painless experience. When I was ready to take my driver skills test in 2016, I went to mail the required materials in order that IDS would submit a certificate of completion to the MVA. When I couldn't find one of the pieces that had been required in 2010 when I received my instructional materials (the "Driver's Bill of Rights," which I later learned is now obsolete), I called the office. Patrick M. answered the phone. Upon seeing that I had taken the class almost six years ago, he immediately took on a condescending tone. It was clear that he was talking down to me because he couldn't fathom that someone had waited six years to get a license and thought me an idiot--not considering the fact that my reasons for doing so are both valid and incredibly personal. He began to "explain" to me that since I had taken the course so long ago, I would have to redo the final exam (Unit 9 of the in-classroom portion). He was not clear at first, and when I asked clarifying questions, he became more and more annoyed. I would have been receptive to this had he been respectful when speaking to me. The fact is that there was some information that I simply did not know and would have been happy to learn had he been accommodating and understanding when speaking to me, but instead, he chose to be downright nasty and passive aggressive. At one point in the conversation, he said (and I quote), "I can explain it to you a little slower." I have never been so disrespected by a "customer service" representative in my entire life. When I asked him his name, he said that he was Patrick M.--the very Patrick M. who has been posting condescending replies to his other customers' feedback on this page. When I asked for the name of his supervisor, he revealed (in an incredibly exasperated tone) that he "was in charge here." How could someone with such deplorable interpersonal skills possibly be in charge of a *school*? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised--it's a typical example of a has-been ex-cop wanting to exert what little authority he has left over a poor recent college grad. When I did redo the Unit 9 exam, they failed to notify me via email that I had been approved to take the MVA's driver skills test. When I called to follow up 3 days after the date by when they said they would notify me, the man who answered said he would call me back with more information--but never did. It took my checking in once more to get any kind of definitive answer from anyone. They said they had "sent the information already," which was an oversight at best and a lie at worst--neither email address to which they claimed to have sent the information had received any messages, even in the spam folder. It should not take three tries on my part for a company to relay necessary and timely information to paying customers. Trust me, folks--you can do better than I Drive Smart, especially if you are taking a non-traditional route to get your license. Excellent, excellent organization! Both of our sons learned how to drive with I Drive Smart and it was a great experience for both of them. The instructors were professional but nice and helpful. You are able to order extra sessions, which we did, especially for driving at night. Most importantly, both of them passed their driver's road tests on the first try and with flying colors! And we know it's all because of the high quality instructors at IDS. In fact, we know some kids that used other driving schools and they have had to take the road test a few times to finally pass. We also highly recommend signing up for the Pre-Driving Test session which takes the students through what the actual driving test will be like. This last one is a separate fee and a little expensive, but if you can afford it, it is worth every penny! You won't be sorry. read more
