Hotel le Regence was a fantastic find on our recent stay in Arles. A great hotel, and a great deal. To be clear, this is a 2-star hotel, so you shouldn't expect the polish and pomp of a 5-star hotel in Paris. However, the hotel is comfortable, impeccably clean, and charmingly hospitable -- far above what we were expecting.
The hotel is located on the river in the NW corner of Arles, just inside the city walls about two blocks from the train station. The NW section of town is less busy and less glitzy than the section around the amphitheater and the forum, but it is much more quiet in the evenings. The hotel looks out on the water, with stunning Van Gogh views and a cool breeze in the evening.
When we first arrive, Eric, the gentile proprietor, greeted us warmly. He and his wife were constantly attentive to our needs and those of our daughters. Our rooms looked out on the river, which we considered a definite plus. (Eric graciously moved us to a river room when we asked.) As others have said, the rooms are spotless, and have enough room to sit -- not large by US standards, but not small by European. The hotel serves a nice breakfast of croissants, bread, cheese, meats, and cereals, with juice and hot drinks, at below market prices.
The hotel's location allows easy access by foot to the amphitheater and various excellent restaurants -- ask Eric for his recommendations -- a short walk to the train station, and a quick drive to the main routes to other towns. There is free safe parking in front of and behind the hotel. And Eric rents bicycles, if you desire.
So all in all, this was a great place to stay, far above our expectations, without any significant drawbacks, well-deserving of 5 stars. read more
