The place is, quite frankly, a dump. It was easily the worst hotel that I stayed in during my two-week trip to France. For one thing, there's no parking at the hotel and it's very difficult to get to. You have to park in a parking garage that's about a ten-minute walk away, then drag your bags up winding streets that climb higher up the hill until you finally reach the hotel. Then the ultimate disappointment: no elevator. We had to drag our bags up three flights of narrow stairs. By the time we got to the room, we were sweaty and exhausted. Then, there's the room itself. It was mostly brown, clearly old and worn, with a brown carpet and dusty corners. The cheap, thin towels had mysterious yellow stains on them. The wifi didn't work, and the whole place just felt run-down. And then our breakfast. We went to the breakfast room and had to wait ten minutes before anyone helped us. When they finally did, they brought a disappointing assortment of mediocre food. There was no choice whatsoever about what we were served, and none of it was very good. I'm definitely never coming back to this hotel, and I may even write to Lonely Planet to complain that they recommended it. It was so disappointing and the real lowlight of our trip.

Singles are 119 Euro and doubles are 119-179 (with terrace) Euro. No lift, but all rooms are on 2 floors. Very nice buffet breakfast. They provide a 1 liter glass bottle you can get still or sparkling water upon request. The hotel is very close to the Roman Arena, where bullfights occur now and the Theatre Antique, a Roman amphitheater now used for multiple events including concerts. The have a takeaway cafeteria (le Comptoir) with Movenpick gelato, pastries, friut, coffee drinks. Several good bistros and restaurants are literally across the rue Laure or just down the street. It's located halfway between the Roman ampitheatre and the Roman theatre in Arles -- ideal location! The room we were in (4) had a balcony that overlooked the Roman theatre -- it's appears to be the only room with a balcony. Given the quaint, 19th century look and feel of the hotel, we were pleasantly surprised by the interior of the room -- air conditioning, modern lighting with switches by the bed to control the room lights, USB charging ports each side of the bed, strong wifi signal, large tub, modern shower and toilet, plenty of hot water, comfortable bed -- it was on a par with most modern hotels in terms of amenities and comfort. There's a 24-hour cafe in the lobby and the night manager is happy to serve you food and drinks any hour of the night. Breakfast is an extra charge and consists of cold cuts, cheese, various breads, fresh orange juice (that you prepare yourself on an electric squeezer), tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Alternatively, you can forego the breakfast fee and buy what you want from the lobby cafe. The staff were all cheerful, courteous, and helpful. Most spoke passable English so there was never any problem with communication. Some caveats -- there is no long-term parking at the hotel -- we had to unload our luggage near the hotel front door, then go park the car at a city parking garage nearby. It's only about 5 minutes away, so no big deal -- it's just a little inconvenient if you need to access your car while staying in the hotel. Luckily, just about everything worth seeing in Arles is walking distance from the hotel. Also, there's no elevator and the stairways are a little narrow, so pack light and small if possible. A pleasant bonus is that guests get to use the "spa" which is fashioned like a modern rendition of a Roman bath -- a large tub about 5 feet deep that's about 15 feet square filled with water at 90°F with a sitting area that has air bubbles. There's also a steam room, shower, and lounge area with tea and coffee facilities. Guests must make a booking to use it and there's a limit of 12 people at a time. So be sure to pack your swimsuit, even in winter. Bottom line -- Hotel Le Calendal is a superb place to have as your base when sightseeing in Arles.

Where to start .. ahh, let's start with the so called "high speed internet" this Best Western is so proud of. I think it's soooo high speed that my laptop doesn't even have the capability to keep up with the speed. Every webpage, mouse click - takes 5 minutes (or longer) to load. And only one device is allowed one login and password, one login/password will get you exactly 24 hours access. I know this because as soon as you log in, there's a pop up counting down the hours to the minutes to the seconds of your time left. I also forgot to mention that it takes 5-7 minutes just to connect to the wifi. Moving on -- Shower This hotel has one of the most retarded showerhead holder I've ever seen, it would have been better off not having the holder. All the holder does is provide a place for your showerhead to hang off of and point vertically to the floor with the precision of NOT getting any water on your actual body. No doors for the shower/tub as well nor curtains and a loosely hinged glass door to block the water from going to the sink. The sink in the bathroom smells old and moldy every time you turn on the water. Hey guys, how about just pour some bleach or something down the drain ? Soap and shampoo ? You only get 2 in 1 deal. A squeegie bottle attached to the wall. Are they really THAT cheap that they can't even provide a separate body soap and shampoo ? Or lotion, maybe ? Then there's the phones. In every hotel/motel I've stayed at, pressing "0" should get you to the front desk, but not in this hotel! Not just that but no call list are found anywhere near the phone. You want the front desk or room service ? Too bad! Put on your pants and shoes and walk to the damn counter, where do you think you are, a hotel ?! The halls in between each rooms, smell like used diapers. Yucky! Parking is available but for 14 Euros a night and no keycard for your garage. Only way in is to press the button for the front desk so they can buzz you in. I wonder if these guys have ever been to any other hotels where just inserting your room keycard should give you access to the parking gate.. you'd think that's easier than calling the front desk all the time. Finally, communication problems - No one really responds to any emails at this hotel apparently.. they seem to check their emails (maybe?) but no one replies, or reply when they want to. Staff are friendly though but everything else are not. I wish there was a rating lower than a 1 star.

Oops! :P The WiFi was great - consistently available, strong signal, and would remember your device without you having to log on or click something on a splash page every time. That is a rarity with hotels! Be sure to get a code for each device you're connecting. The private terraces are quite small, barely enough for two people to stand in, but the view is great even if you're just overlooking the red tile roofs of the neighboring buildings against the blue sky (I mean, we're in Provence here after all!). The front desk staff is multilingual and very knowledgable about the local free shuttle (see http://www.tout-envia.com), where to catch it to get to the Gare SNCF Arles. That's a huge help when you have luggage. The only quibble to the hotel is that we happened to visit right when the third floor swimming pool is under extensive renovation, but given the great food and wonderful ancient Roman sites in Arles, my priority was certainly not on swimming! :)

We were lucky to get a room up under the eaves; out the bathroom window we saw the old courtyard a few hundred years old, and out the bedroom window we saw the Roman amphitheater a few thousand years old. Both windows have screens (probably inspired by the ever-present pigeons, rather than mosquitoes); with both open, the breeze flowed through our airy aerie. Breakfast is well done here --- a large spread of sweets including baguettes, pain au chocolat, apricots, prunes, hazelnuts, and croissants; savory including 4-5 types of cheese and some sliced meat. The breakfast host takes orders for coffees (including decaf) and eggs (the 5-minute was nicely soft-boiled, perhaps a little runny; the table next to us got a 10-minute egg.) The orange juice is fresh squeezed. (There was some annoying street noise from motor scooters and rap-playing cars zooming up the curving rue du Cloître, but not terrible. More entertainingly, there were a series of children's dance classes over at the amphitheater, starting with elementary school and proceeding through high school.) There's a second-floor terrace that promises drinks pulled by the front-desk receptionist if you dial 9, although we were unable to reach them when we tried; also a good place for a small picnic and a sunset. While the building is quite ancient, they'd made a lot of modern updates and it had one of the most gorgeous patios ever. Our room was spacious with a really cute bathroom. They had one of the best free breakfasts we experienced during our whole trip, with a boiled-egg station, which I hadn't seen before or since. Plus the most amazing croissants, wow. That said, there were a few issues which prevent me from giving them a higher rating: - They went a little crazy with the lavender room fragrance and we were seriously gassed out for most of evening--we had to leave our window open in hopes of dissipating it but it stayed pretty strong the whole time. - The floor of our room was sloped, and the person whose bed was in the sloped corner had the worst night's sleep ever. - The bike storage was on the 2nd floor, and it wasn't easy hauling our rather heavy hybrid bikes up and down the stairs (granted, this is a very specialized problem--most of the guests probably won't have to deal with this) I think this place would be a good value for most travelers and worth a look. STEPH JUDGEMENT: Conveniently located with cute decor and decent amenities, but has some caveats.

I enjoyed the nice breakfast, smiling faces, pleasant service and lovely courtyard. Don't hesitate to order a bottle of wine and sit in the courtyard and read a book. Yes the beds could be updated to a more comfortable mattress and a few little things could be repaired but the place has tons of charm. Also I'd recommend that they use a little less lavender fragrance. The other issues was that our neighbor was smoking in their room but I dint hold that against the hotel as it was against policy. Great service and great value!
