Try and time your stay for the Wednesday outdoor market - this was one of the best we had ever seen! hotel Gounod is perfectly situated in the heart of it. Such friendly and multi lingual staff. The breakfast was beautifully appointed with fresh yogurt, cheeses, jams and honey and bread. How much more can I eat?! apparently a LOT. The room we had was smartly decorated too - loved the brown/white color scheme. What a gem - don't miss this one!

The room itself is actually spacious compared to all the other places I have visited in France. There is plenty of room to maneuver around the bed. The room is very clean, as is the bathroom with a rain shower head. There are bathrobes and dispensers for soap. There is a computer in the lobby with Internet access. The wifi was spotty and difficult to connect to from the room. But once the connection was established in the lobby, my phone didn't lose it. The breakfast is pretty standard but good, with lots of fresh fruit, bread, cheese, cereal and fresh squeeze OJ. I would recommend Hotel Gounod.

The place is, quite frankly, a dump. It was easily the worst hotel that I stayed in during my two-week trip to France. For one thing, there's no parking at the hotel and it's very difficult to get to. You have to park in a parking garage that's about a ten-minute walk away, then drag your bags up winding streets that climb higher up the hill until you finally reach the hotel. Then the ultimate disappointment: no elevator. We had to drag our bags up three flights of narrow stairs. By the time we got to the room, we were sweaty and exhausted. Then, there's the room itself. It was mostly brown, clearly old and worn, with a brown carpet and dusty corners. The cheap, thin towels had mysterious yellow stains on them. The wifi didn't work, and the whole place just felt run-down. And then our breakfast. We went to the breakfast room and had to wait ten minutes before anyone helped us. When they finally did, they brought a disappointing assortment of mediocre food. There was no choice whatsoever about what we were served, and none of it was very good. I'm definitely never coming back to this hotel, and I may even write to Lonely Planet to complain that they recommended it. It was so disappointing and the real lowlight of our trip.

This hotel is about a 10-15 minute walk from the city center (depending on how fast you walk), but it still has a good location to a supermarket and other shops. I've stayed in a B&B Hotel in Paris so I was familiar with the style and layout of this hotel. Speaking French is a plus, but they have a limited knowledge of English and some other languages. They assign individual codes to open up the door to the room, so don't lose that piece of paper! The rooms are small (normal for European standards), but comfortable. The bed was small, but since I'm a small person, it didn't bother me. Breakfast offered cereal, juices, yogurt, jams, nutella, croissant, tea, coffee. I helped myself to a croissant and some nutella and tea. The hotel was clean and a nice place to stay in Nimes.

The surrounding was most lovely, definitely medieval, artisan, and countryside. But what we really recommend is the cuisine. Do not miss the chef Edward Cristaudo's menus, one 3-course, the other 6-course. Basically you chose the courses you desire from the general menu ... and off you go into the delicious world of Michelin-star like cuisine. Fresh produce, local inspiration and more classical French influences make for a marvelous and most enjoyable meal experience. Wines are most reasonably priced (as is the menu) and are well-discovered amongst the best local producers (there are other, non-regional wines on the menu, though) All of our connoisseur taste buds were delighted. The very competent, friendly and personal service was delightful AND classy, but never pretentious. Just a delightful break from the often stuffy Michelin-star service, without giving up the culinary quality, innovation and taste. We will certainly return to "Le Crillon".

The location looks ok on paper and you can walk to most everything however the walk from the hotel goes through some relatively seedy areas. I didn't like that, especially at night. Deserted store fronts, strange people lingering on the streets, filth, and not comfortable at all. Plus the hotel fronts the motorway. The decor when entering is kind of in-your-face chic. Hollywood signs, Marilyn Monroe carpet, life sized Marvel comic figure, and weird seating shaped like cupped hands. Ok, that's odd. Our room was, in a word, generic. Small, nondescript, sort of Comfort Inn wannabe. In my book, that's really not a good thing. The included breakfast buffet was kind of pitiful. But that's coming from someone who had just been spoiled at our last place. Weird coffee machine too. I just wanted a coffee!! Anyway, if your budget is constrained, you want a relatively clean, generic hotel with a little pinache, a pool, and kid friendly, this may be for you. I was glad to move on.
