Restaurant La Roseraie is set in a beautiful garden outside the Hotel La Roseraie. The trees…read more flowers and pathways are absolutely stunning but that's where the Wow ends, and the OW begins. The positives were an extensive wine list and a smashing special entree, the Swordfish Trifecta. The trifecta consisted of tartar, smoked, and sashimi; a delicate and wonderful dish. The restaurant specialty is duck and I went with the waiters strong suggestion to order it. The duck was presently beautifully but was tough as a construction boot and had zero flavor. I ordered the duck medium rare as suggested, and it was cooked perfectly. The meat and the texture was honestly the worse duck I have ever had; it was simply not edible. I spoke with the waiter about it very discreetly and he seemed perplexed and somewhat hesitant to speak with the chef. I asked for the chef to come speak with me if he wouldn't, so he left the dish and retreated. He came back about 10 minutes later and said "sorry"; my response was "what did the chef say" and his response "sorry". He then walked away. He never offered to replace the duck or another dish. I sat there for 20 minutes and never touched the dish. When he returned he said "sorry, we would like to offer you dessert". I was beside myself at this juncture and frankly had lost my appetite. I declined the dessert offer. Our bill came to 102 Euros for my wife and I with one entree, two plats, one dessert (my wife), and a bottle of wine. There was no adjustment made to my bill for duck and I paid the full price plus left a nice tip for the waiter. My belief was it was not his fault and the chef was probably a monster to work for. Neither the chef, maitre d said a word to us as we left. The following day I sent the maitre d a note expressing my strong dissatisfaction with my dinner, the experience, and their overall lack of pride in their food. The maitre d responded with an angry and scathing note accusing me of lying and not knowing great food if I saw it. He went on to berate me and spew ugliness. My strong, strong recommendation is to avoid this restaurant at all costs. Maybe it was an off night for the chef, but there is no excuse for the maitre d's lack of professionalism and ugliness.

This place is hard to categorize but easy to describe. What you can visit is an exact reproduction…read moreof a cave discovered in 1940 by children. The original cave was opened to visitors when its content became public. A cave? With the most beautifully executed paintings from the paleolithic, 16000 years old to you and me. Paintings? nearly 2000, most of them animals, with mainly horses, stags, but also bison and cattle. The paintings are stunning, some of the best in Europe. The walls and ceilings are covered with them. Why a reproduction? because of the damage done to the murals by a fungus that thrives on the carbon visitors exhale. I have visited Lascaux 2 several times and I can assure you that it is very well done, the dimensions of the caves are the same as the original and the paintings are exact replicas. I never had at any time the feeling that this was a fake. The caves are in a wood in the countryside near Montignac. There is ample parking, and the site is accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs, albeit a little inclined. Tickets are not directly for sale on site, you have to buy them from the tourist office in Montignac. To get a better idea, you can visit the website and get a glimpse of what lies in the caves.

The French know how to make food exciting, and this chef delivers! We were booked at the associated…read moresmall hotel (really nice, super friendly staff) and they asked when we checked in of we wanted a dinner reservation. We had research this and a couple of other nearby spots, but this seemed the best so we said yes. She asked if we wanted a second reservation for the next day and we waffled not wanting to commit but she said there is only one table left so I'll pencil you in and you can cancel if you don't want it. Our first night's dinner was so good that we immediately decided to return for a second night. For our first night I had the seasonal chef's recommendation which was a starter of shrimp in a tapioca soup (perfect large shrimp and a delicious broth), chicken stuffed with mushrooms and parsnips beneath the skin, and a cold strawberry custard dessert. It was all fabulous. My wife had one of the fois gras starters, roast lamb, and a delicious chocolate and crispy peanut dessert (which she particularly liked). A nice 1/2 bottle of local red wine, a delicious beet amuse bouche and and after dinner marshmellow (house made) and macaron final treat made for a memorable meal. Our second night we had to try all different things. My wife had the second fois gras starter which is fashioned in house and was spectacular. She had roast cod (perfectly flakes and coated with sesame seeds) accompanied by some exquisite cabbage (never thought I'd say that about cabbage). For dessert she had the rum baba with mango ice cream (drenched at the table with spiced and fruited rum). I had the poached oyster starter. The oyster were lightly cooked and served in the shells on a bed of leeks with a seafood emulsion. I followed this up with the sweetbreads which were something I'd always wanted to try. And finally the profiteroles (small pastry shells with coffee over cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce. This time our waiter recommended a nice local white wine (from Chardonnay grapes) that was very nice. An amuse bouche of pumpkin soup and the after dinner treats perfected the meal. So, two nights, two home runs. Great meals at a fair price (about 100 euros for two each night). Reservations recommended, but once you have a reservation the table is yours for the night, they don't turn the table for someone else. Both nights the chef came out of the inaccurate kitchen as we were leaving to greet us and check on our experience.
