This guy was so kind, patient, thorough and helpful with many recommendations! This hotel was beautiful, it was such a deal, I couldn't believe how gorgeous the suites were! The area is pretty safe, never felt like I had any issues just don't do anything you wouldn't in any other city! Like walking around at 4 am or causing issues. I wish I had pics but unfortunately forgot! I will continue to book here anytime I come to Portland! If you use capital one travel, this is one of their premium hotels and we got $50 in Credit towards anything, $25 per night per person towards breakfast and a room upgrade all for free!

It is a large mixed dormitory with beds stacked on top of each of other. Hence, you will need to climb stairs if you have a bed on top. For a hostel bed, it is nicer than your typical hostel. There is a place to lock up your things in your space as well as some lockers in the common area. You can also cover your bed for more privacy. Within the common area, there is a place for you to eat inside the room as well as there is a large table. Within the hostel, your experience may vary depending on who is staying in the hostel at the same time. For me, it was not a very comfortable setup due to the lack of privacy and noise. Also of note is that Old Town is a bit of a rough part of town with many homeless folks so it can be sketchy walking to and from the hostel. I think the hostel itself is fine if you are okay with the setup, but can't recommend staying in the area unless you have no other options.

This was an odd stay: at about 9:30 pm, we received a knock on our hotel room door. A man with…read morewalkie-talkie stood beyond the peep hole. I asked if I could help him and he excitedly responded, "Oh! Em, I'm just confirming that this room is occupied." I assured him it was and he scurried off down the hallway talking to someone on his radio. This was before the literal garbage fire. The hotel sits on the edge of less than savory part of town. In fact, our room overlooked a park that is frequented by unhoused people. This, in and of itself, wasn't a problem -- this part of town has several drop in clinics that become gathering points for unhoused people. It became a problem when, at 11 pm, I opened the curtains for one last look at the city, only to be treated by a trashcan in the park outside our window spewing smoke. Just as I picked up the phone to call Guest Services, the thing erupted into flames. There are trees in this park whose trunks are firmly planted in the turf across the street, but whose limbs brush against the hotel, so I wanted to be sure this was resolved before going to bed. When I told guest services about the fire, I was challenge with, "well, is it on hotel property?" I explained it wasn't, but it was just outside of our window, and the front desk staff advised me to call the non emergency line for the fire department. Now, we're from out of town -- thus our needing a hotel to sleep in for the night -- and deferring to the out-of-towners to report a fire close to the hotel seems a bit less than responsible; we don't know street names, or of this is a common enough occurrence with which to bother the fire department. I told the the fire department that I had called the front desk, and that they handed the task of calling off to me, and the dispatcher's response was a sarcastic, "oh, that's convenient for them. Well it looks like someone -- not your hotel -- called the fire in, so the firefighters are already en route." Was this an anomalous chain of very strange events? Maybe. But it's all left us feeling a more than a little uneasy.

I've only ever seen a hotel keep the first night of the reservation. It was the weekend and hard to imagine they had any difficulty booking the room. Being a historic hotel, rooms are usually a little smaller. I thought the beds were comfortable, as was the bedding. We also had breakfast at the hotel's cafe/restaurant there in the lobby. Food was good, and the staff were attentive. Only downside was the valet parking. We had to go around the block a couple of times cause the front of the hotel was being blocked by other traffic and couldn't squeeze our way in. I also felt bad for the valet staff as the parking was somewhere offsite. Overall, a great stay, would recommend staying here. Hotel is quite old & has history in Portland (built in 1912 and used to be called Hotel Mallory). Their standard room is small & quaint, but all that we really needed for our stay. The bed & pillows were a bit too soft for our preference, but we made do. A resort fee is included, and so we got slippers from housekeeping and would go down for water in the lobby & coffee some mornings. Hotel guests get 15% off at Gracie's (breakfast) and Driftwood Room (the bar), just have to mention your room. We only went to the bar one evening. Parking lot is directly across the street from the hotel. It's $40/night, but we were able to get a slight discount from our booking which was nice. The parking lot is quite safe as they lock the side doors after 6:30pm and they have a security guard. Overnight after 10pm it is gated, and we returned a little late one night, and the front desk was able to open the gate for us to drive our car in. (I'm not sure if this available all night, but we arrived back just before 11pm and I know they have a sign for Driftwood Bar as well, and that closes at 11pm so if anyone happens to park there, they need to be able to let them out.) I did feel the hotel was pretty centrally located in downtown if you don't mind walking a little. Generally a very quiet area.

The greeting was subpar (which was one of my favorite moments of each stay) and then what I experienced in my room was well below the standard I would expect: cracked window, scudge coming down the bathroom drain, stained carpet, a slip cover on the couch because the couch was in such bad shape, etc. I ran into the manager in the elevator and shared what I was experiencing and invited him to see the room. Instead of moving me to a different room, he offered an upgrade for my next visit. Why would I come back. In addition, he shared that the front desk person isn't great at hospitality and she is leaving. This is his hotel... and he threw her under the bus. There were many more moments: Going to get my car only to find the garage door locked. Someone should have let me know to call in advance to have access to my car - I was carrying all my bags and had to walk back to the hotel. And my experience with the bar service and food was subpar. The soaps in the showers were top quality and smelled lovely - Rooms were very quiet and the whole hotel had a luxurious feel. - The staff were INCREDIBLE! Special shout out to the front desk staff who helped out immensely. We did have to change rooms in the middle (our reservation, not the hotel's fault) and they made it seamless. - Extra special shout out to Richie in the valet service. All of the valet guys were incredible, quick and kind. - The food in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner was delicious and relatively affordable for the quality. - Wine hour (free wine from 5-6pm) was a nice touch to get our evenings going in the right direction. The wine wasn't the best but I can't complain about free wine and appetizers. - Our only criticism was the lack of water stations on the hotel floors. Not sure if we couldn't find them - they did have ice machines - but we did have to go back to the lobby and into the fitness room to fill our bottles. Not a bad thing, just a little inconvenient. No one can sleep through that. Gladly when we came down to the lobby they stated that it was a false alarm. Soon after about an hour or so we got a text message saying that it was a false alarm. I did enjoy the breakfast here at the lobby! That was actually pretty delicious and I would say to try it out. The beds and comfortable and you can also bring your dog into this hotel which is kind of cool! That was a bonus seeing all the different-sized dogs roaming around.

My window faced the river, and there's something that settles in you about waking up to water. There's something else, too, in hearing regular conversations, watching regular people head to work or stroll the waterfront. That's real. That's a city letting you in. The location made everything easy -- right downtown on Morrison, steps from the waterfront. I hopped the train and went where I needed to go without calculating an Uber every time I stepped outside. The theme and decorations in the hotel were consistent throughout the property, lobby, escalator or in the room. The lobby and bar looks cozy but a little cramp as the front desks is right there without a bigger space for guests waiting in line to not be in the way if you are trying to get to the elevators or the restaurants/bar. Four elevators right next to the check in counter, but for some reasons they take forever to reach. The room is nice and clean. Coffee and capsules are stocked. An empty but working mini fridge for use if you have anything perishable u would like to store or just chill overnight. Their AC is not working too well. Even though we had it set at the highest fan setting and coldest temp, it's just not working well. Shower was nice and clean, but the water pressure isn't there especially with the overhead so we had to use the hand shower for slightly better pressure/volume. Oh and they are using those bottles on the wall for shampoo and such. Except, they forgot to refill them ...

Unfortunately, my experience during our five-day stay at The Duniway in October 2026 has been…read moreoverwhelmingly negative. Two separate incidents required management intervention, hotel security assistance, and ultimately police involvement. Both incidents raised serious concerns about guest safety, the security of our property, and the hotel's ability to respond appropriately when problems arise. Incident One: Valet Service and Vehicle Safety On the second morning of our stay, we waited more than 30 minutes for valet service to retrieve our rental vehicle. Despite our repeated attempts to obtain our car, we eventually had to ask the front desk staff to intervene. Approximately five minutes later, the valet arrived with our vehicle. The valet employee smelled strongly of marijuana smoke, as did the interior of our rental vehicle. This raised serious concerns that our vehicle had been operated by someone who may have been under the influence of marijuana. When we expressed our concerns, the valet responded by telling us to "park our own car next time" in the public parking garage. His dismissive and unprofessional response only compounded an already troubling situation. Anthony, the manager on duty, was apologetic and offered to waive our parking charges for the remainder of our stay. While I appreciated his acknowledgment of the situation, the incident left us concerned about the security of our rental vehicle and the standards of conduct and accountability for employees entrusted with guests' property. Incident Two: Guest Disturbance and Failure to Respond to Safety Concerns On the final night of our stay, an extremely heated altercation involving several guests erupted in the hallway on our floor. The confrontation involved prolonged screaming, profanity, and escalating hostility. The disturbance was so intense and continued for so long that we became genuinely frightened for our personal safety. We contacted the front desk to report the situation and were assured that hotel security would respond. After approximately five additional minutes of continued screaming and escalating behavior, with no apparent security intervention, we called the front desk again. During that call, the staff member hung up on me. I called back and reiterated that we did not feel safe. I was told that we would be transferred to security, but the call was disconnected again. When I called a third time to explain what had happened and express our continued safety concerns, the front desk employee, Kass, responded in a manner that conveyed annoyance rather than concern. Eventually, police arrived and removed the individuals involved in the altercation. The entire incident lasted nearly 30 minutes. What I find particularly troubling is not simply that an altercation occurred. Hotels cannot necessarily prevent guests from behaving inappropriately. However, they are responsible for taking reasonable steps to protect guests and responding appropriately when serious safety concerns are reported. Instead, we experienced repeated disconnections, dismissive communication, and an apparent lack of timely intervention during a situation that was frightening and potentially dangerous. As I write this at 11:15 p.m., I remain unable to return to sleep following the incident. What should have been a peaceful final evening of our vacation has instead been overshadowed by fear, frustration, and a profound lack of confidence in the hotel's ability to ensure our safety. Overall Experience and Concerns I have visited Portland approximately a dozen times over the past several years and have consistently enjoyed positive experiences throughout the city. Unfortunately, this stay at The Duniway has been a striking departure from those experiences. To encounter two significant incidents during a single five-day stay is disappointing enough. That both incidents involved concerns about our personal safety or the security of our property makes the experience considerably more troubling. I recognize that hotel management cannot control every action of its employees or guests. However, management is responsible for establishing appropriate standards, ensuring staff are prepared to respond to safety concerns, and taking reasonable action when those concerns arise. In both instances, those expectations were not met. While I appreciated Anthony's willingness to address the valet incident, the hotel's overall handling of these situations has left me questioning its commitment to guest safety and accountability. I believe these incidents warrant serious management review, particularly regarding valet oversight, security response procedures, front desk communication, and the treatment of guests who report feeling unsafe. I would appreciate a substantive response from hotel leadership addressing these concerns and explaining what steps will be taken to prevent similar experiences for future guests.

As far as my room, it was well appointed and clean. The only issues I had were in the evenings, when I had all the lamps on in my room, it wasn't quite bright enough. The gym was great but the o my complaint was there was only one exercise mat in the entire gym. Fortunately I was able to claim it when I worked out, but it was also nail biter that such a large hotel would only have one mat. I stayed in the 9th floor and found the room to be quiet. Another plus was the amount of viewing options on the TV. In addition to cable, there are additional streaming options- I love that I had access to Pluto TV. That is a huge plus. Overall, The Nines is a good hotel and the misses were quite small. I would definitely stay here again next time I visit Portland.

I did enjoy having the nice couch, though there were some stains on it. The view wasn't anything too special, it overlooked the next-door building. The bathroom was clean, well lit, and I enjoy not having the little bottles of shampoo and conditioner, and instead the larger containers for less waste. It was generally quiet in the room, though you could hear the light rail go by. Wasn't a huge fan of the fact that the mini fridge was full of things that if I touched it would charged my room. If you wanted to bring leftovers from nearby restaurant, you can't because there's no space in the fridge to put things. Overall it was a good place to stay while in Portland.
