I've stayed at the Hotel Deluxe a few times now and every visit reminds me why I keep coming back. Check-in is so easy it almost feels suspicious. No drama, no confusion, just keys in hand and off you go. The building itself has that great old Portland movie-era charm. It feels like the kind of place where a film star from the 1940s might walk around the corner at any moment looking for a martini. Instead it's usually just me looking for the elevator, but still... the vibe is excellent. Parking is on the next block over and surprisingly easy, which in Portland counts as a minor miracle. I've spent more time looking for parking at grocery stores. Now let's talk about the Driftwood Bar. Do not skip it. Curt the bartender is the kind of guy who makes you want to cancel your plans and just sit there all evening solving the world's problems over a well-made drink. Friendly, funny, and he actually knows how to make a proper cocktail. I wish I had more time to just saddle up to the bar and chat with him. Breakfast at Gracie's was also great. Our waitress Erin took care of us Wednesday morning when the place was mostly empty. Service was friendly, the food looked like someone actually cared when they put it on the plate, and the prices were totally reasonable. No $38 "artisanal avocado toast with existential despair." Just good breakfast done right. So what more do you want? Comfortable clean bed, reasonable prices, great bar, solid breakfast, and you're right in the heart of Portland. If you're staying in the city and want a hotel with character instead of a bland corporate sleep box, Hotel Deluxe is the move. I'll definitely be back... read more

The actual visit to the hotel was fine. The front desk was helpful. The room was okay. The view was great. The parking situation was inconvenient, but fine. After my stay, I had left my hairdryer in the room. The next day I called hoping they would be able to ship it to me. Cat (Kat?) answered the phone and said she found it. I know she found it because she also asked if I had left a brush, which I did. She said she could ship it, but just needed me to pay for shipping first, asked for my email, and said she would send an email to handle that. I never received an email. After a few days, I asked my mom, who is local, if she could just go down and pick it up since I was heading out of the country for a week. She went down to the hotel, but was told they didn't have it. Not only that but there were no notes in the system about it either. Zero information about my previous call or that they were waiting for payment to ship it. So I again called and got Thomas who searched everywhere and couldn't find it any longer. I asked for a manager to call me, this was 2 days ago. Still no call. I can only assume at this point that an employee stole my expensive hair dryer, which is why there were no notes about it and I never received any emails. I'd avoid this hotel in the future. Update 4/30/2026: Since posting this review, the situation has gotten significantly worse. On April 13, I received an automated text from ILeftMyStuff, the hotel's own lost and found system, confirming my hair dryer and brush were found and logged on March 1. I paid for return shipping through their system that same day and never received my items. On April 19 I called and spoke with a staff member named Claudia who confirmed the hotel had my items and would ship them. She later walked that back, saying she had only assumed they were there because they appeared on an internal list. I had previously requested a manager call me back. That call never came. Today the hotel is claiming the items were disposed of on April 1. This is the same staff member, Cat, who originally found my items and confirmed she had them. When my mother went to the hotel in person and when I called, we were both told they had no record of the items whatsoever. They did not notify me before disposing of them despite having my contact information on file from my original call. Oh boy. This is gonna be a fun review. I don't think my standards are particularly high even with the amount of hotels I've stayed in and restaurants I've been to. Honestly, a lot of the stuff I've seen in other negative reviews, I don't care that much. Like, some of the reviews point out small cracks in the wall, stains on the carpet or even that the lamps flicker once in a while. But well, this building is really old. Some people stay here partly because they like the blast to the past. If there isn't some minor cosmetic defects, how can you even feel that the building is old? So I can excuse that. The view out of my window is the extremely dirty and moldy looking side of the next building. But I don't particularly care. I can excuse that. I could point out that I stayed in a Japanese hotel not long ago for $65 a night, and room service gave me free bottles of water every day. Hotel deLuxe charges me "resort fees" but threatens to charge me another seven dollars if I open the water in my room. But it is a larger size and nicer brand, and the cost of living is different. I can excuse that. Or how about the fact that this hotel no longer offers valet parking, but I still have to pay forty dollars a day to park when I'm already staying at the hotel? What's funnier is the parking lot right in front is parking for Gracie's. While Gracie's is inside the hotel, it's technically a separate business and would not agree to be more generous about their lot. As a result, if Gracie's is not open, you have to pay $40 to park there also. Gracie's is only open during weekend brunch. Plus, there's been vandalism here in the past so no one chooses to park in that open lot instead of the parking garage that has an actual security guard. The result is that there is a large parking lot right in front of the hotel that's always empty, but you still have to pay forty dollars a day to park. The situation is beyond ridiculous, but I'm not sure what the hotel should do. I can excuse even that. Here's what I can't excuse. My mom came out of her room after two minutes to say that the sink doesn't drain. The hotel had other vacant rooms on the same floor, but instead of letting her move to another room right away, they made us WAIT for their technician to inspect the room for an hour. Is this supposed to be a "four star" hotel? Aside from how rude this is to a customer at an allegedly "nice" hotel, how do you not know that a sink is clogged until after a customer checks in and reports it to you? But wait, there's more. The drain in my shower also drained slow. It drains slightly slower than water coming out of the shower head, so by the end of my shower there's like an inch of water at my feet. Room 429. Another revealing item was the girl at the counter said about her new room, "If the phone in your new room doesn't work, you can come down and ask for me." In other words, management already knows that some of the phones are broken, but they no longer have the motivation or ability to fix them in a timely manner. The next day, my mom revealed that, no, the phone in her room does not work. Between those, we're already talking about problems in three separate rooms. Should I point out that this place doesn't even service your room by default? You have to explicitly ask the lobby for your room to even be cleaned a little bit, which begs the question of why they still have the stupid service signs on the door handle that you can flip over. After all, that means they apparently do **** all, right? As an experiment, I hanged the sign with "Lights, Camera, Action" on the door and left a $20 bill under the notepad. I even wrote "tip" and drew an arrow to the bill on the notepad. Two days in a row, I was gone for most of the day and came back to see the $20 tip sitting in the same spot. I saw one employee on my floor once, and it kinda looked like he was just standing there, like he's bored. Like his job is to provide room service, but he can't do anything until someone moves out or asks for cleaning. Now that I think about it, why even have the notepad then? To me, the primary purpose of that is for room service and customers to talk to each other. You literally have no situational awareness to talk to your customers. Like either your employees don't even walk through the hotel once a day or they've been ordered to ignore the signs for room service. But you still keep those signs in every room.....because.....? And this place charges a resort fee? Service fees? You took a $200 deposit? For what? This is a joke lmao. You can't even afford to put a toothbrush in the bathroom. To be clear, all the employees were super sweet and helpful. I don't blame any of them. I blame the owner/management. The only thing I like about this place is the Driftwood Room. The vibes in there are immaculate. I highly recommend getting a drink there. I cannot in good conscience recommend staying at this hotel. read more

Found this place by chance and ended up having a great stay! Was looking for something a little less "downtown". Hotel deLuxe has tons of character, clean rooms and comfy beds at a great price. Stayed here for a company holiday party. Immediately upon entering the hotel I was greeted with friendly, smiling staff. Checking in was quick and they were very helpful in recommending certain nearby venues. My room was clean. The king bed was comfy and the sheets soft. The bathroom has seen better days, but it was still clean and the shower had good water pressure. Overall, great experience and I would definitely stay here again. read more

This is a review from Mid-October 2023 - I have stayed in this outwardly beautiful hotel twice. Once, when it was the charmingly outdated Mallory Hotel way back in the day and then as Hotel Deluxe in March 2024. First off, I am going to say if you have any physical limitations, skip this hotel. It is older, and there are no ramps to the main lobby, and the parking lot has a permanently broken elevator. There is an "elevator" to the main lobby, but only if someone happens to be running it at the time. I was sick with death flu, AND I suffer from an autoimmune disorder that makes me ache all the time. So I struggled a lot trying to get to and from the hotel, traveling by myself. The staff had real 'tude and really didn't want to put forth any extra effort whatsoever. Getting someone to help get my bags down to the street required an Act of Congress. They also need to be taught basic phone skills. This is not a cheapy place, so I'm not sure why that's happening. Finally, once I stepped outside, I immediately felt unsafe. Especially going to the parking garage. I heard homeless people fighting non-stop, and I swear I heard a man being stabbed as I dragged my suitcase up to the fourth floor of the garage. There's an encampment only about a block and a half away. Honestly, I don't think my room had been vacuumed or really cleaned. There was trash on the floor and peeling paint, and I second the comment from another Yelper about having to go to the CVS to buy cleaning supplies to clean off the sticky headboard. (see included photos) But the real crime here is what happened to the Driftwood Room, which was as close to a Mad Men bar as you could get just ten years ago. It's reverted back to the barfly bar that it was in the Mallory Hotel, but without any of that divey charm. No snazzy bartenders with a gift for banter and suggestions. It's nearly pitch black in there now - no dramatic lighting like before. Probably to hide how it's not been kept up. Now, the only people there are a bunch of uninteresting sad sacks drowning their sorrows. It's like a local corner dive bar. It's no longer a destination. So, do I like anything about the Hotel Deluxe? The lobby is glorious and very photo-worthy. Also, there is all of the art and old Hollywood photos in your room, in the hallways, and everywhere. I looked at as many as I could. I also loved the enormous old-fashioned bathtub, which I took full advantage of. I wish new management would take it over. I saw it in its prime, a year after opening, and I can't unsee that. But perhaps things have gotten better? But I've read some recent reviews, and it doesn't sound like things have changed enough. read more

The hotel was in a great location but our room was not so great. We had two other couples with us staying in other rooms on the same floor. None of our rooms had hot running water. Our room specifically had a broken shower handle and no fan in the bathroom. When we asked about a potential discount for the inconvenience we were denied. $40 a night for an empty parking garage is also a bit steep. read more

This is a cute little hotel. My mom who loves old movies loved the special touches. It was a pleasant surprise for her. Our room was very roomy and had everything we needed. It was clean and the beds were decently comfortable. The only drawbacks were the size of the bathroom and the restaurant not being open. It was very narrow and I felt like I was in the tub while going to the bathroom. The restaurant wasn't open during the week so we had to venture out and I was supposed to be resting. That said, we really enjoyed our stay. They also offer discounts for people who are in town for ORM across the street which we appreciated. The room was cozy and comfortable and we were lucky enough to be able to check in almost three hours earlier than the original reservation (thank you, CeCe!). We were able to sleep really well each night and I think it's the first time I've felt genuinely rested in months. Big fan of the coffee in the morning and the swanky lobby- we spent a lot of time just sitting and enjoying the ambiance. Only complaints are the bathroom doorknob fell off the first time we used it, (maintenance immediately addressed that!!) and I do wish housekeeping had come during our stay. If I could give 0 stars I would! A motel 6 would have been better... even a hostel lol I just can't with how terrible it was. The hotel room had glazed windows. So no view at all We were next to some machine room and 24/7 in the room. Whirrrr brrrrr whirrr. Machine sounds. Constant all night loud af too. Like airplanes taking off loud! Mold in the bathroom on the ceilings and walls, The beds were so hard and the pillows were pancakes! The furniture had rips and holes in it! The carpets were stained Just the worst hotel experience of my life! Oh also upon check in. Apparently they double charged. This was on 5/30. It is now 6/8 and both charges held hostage as pending still! Over 1100$ Apparently this happened to 3 other people at check in! The ONLy redeeming quality was the amazing staff! Thank you Lyle and Ken. The night staff for being so awesome and amazing! The day staff Kat and Madison were also amazing and so helpful! Just be warned tho. The grounds were okay but the entire staff I encountered was unpleasant. I was lied to at check-in that I had a daily credit to use at the bar & restaurant BUT I was still billed the full amount (this was a lie on top of this charged being built into the resort fee as the front desk told me) Upon checkout I also asked for a receipt and I was told I would get it in an email. I called for the receipt twice and finally got it out of them, where I saw more charges. Not great for a 4 star hotel. Wont be back. The $408 stay I paid for came out to $600 after more taxes and fees for their ridiculous charges. Also had to go to CVS to wipe off the nasty, peeling headboard. We're Portland locals and have been enjoying the Driftwood Room for many, many years. Decided to take advantage of the year-end discount special on a suite and stayed overnight in the hotel. Overall it was really a positive experience. Excellent customer service from all the staff. The suite was roomy, comfortable and clean. But the furniture is clearly used and dated, and the carpet absolutely needs to be replaced. The Driftwood is still cozy and lovely. But we sure wish they'd revamp their happy hour menu, which doesn't currently offer anything very appetizing. Breakfast at Gracie's was nice although a bit pricey for the offerings. We did park overnight in the garage and did not have any issues. But we always make sure that our car is completely empty, without anything visible inside, and securely locked. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience, and we will visit again. read more

Overall, the hotel is nice. Just a few blocks up you'll find the city center with so many coffee shops, places to eat, and shops, plus public transportation is close by as well. Hotel lobby is beautiful, with coffee, tea, and water available all day. We paid for a room upgrade, and the room itself was very nice, but some of the furniture needs updating. We did find a hair band in the shower when we pulled the shower curtain, and the bench at the end of the bed was pretty stained. The couch had this cover on it that looked like a sheet, so not sure what was being covered, because from the pictures I've seen, none of the couches in other rooms are covered. The dresser door where the mini fridge was located was broken. We did not have a car, but I did overhear guests complain about the parking situation. Apparently the the hotel has a garage up the street and they charge $40 for parking, even though I did see the Gracies (the restaurant in the hotel) parking lot across the street was practically empty the 4 days we stayed here, but you cannot park there as a hotel guest. I loved this hotel at one time, but sadly, I feel that it has started to suffer some from neglect. Stayed here for Valentine's Day, as an overnight getaway (Plus, we had symphony tickets). My travel partner booked the hotel initially on Expedia, but decided to book via the hotel, so as to add on a package to the deal. By booking through the hotel, they added an additional almost $75 to the cost, before the additional taxes and charges. While the package that added a bottle of champagne and a late check out was lovely, the champagne was a cheap bottle of $5.99 American bubbly and two tiny chocolates, that I'm sure my travel companion paid about $80 for. We mainly wanted the later checkout, as we were going to be out later and didn't want to rush leaving early. The heating didn't work in our room, and we were freezing all night (I personally would have called the front desk, but my partner didn't want to bother anyone, as it was super late and we were tired). We also didn't have extra blankets in the room, so we used the robes in the closet. They did wave the amenities fee for the inconvenience of the heating system. The bathroom was especially cold! There is no additional fan or heating source. I think the window was not properly sealed and cold air came blowing through. Our bathtub was chipped and the water came out brown when we turned it on. The Driftwood Bar still has an amazing happy hour, but it also is not as super as it once was (but I blame that more on the economy than the hotel). I had the Death in the Afternoon Champagne Cocktail (If you didn't know, this is one of only a handful of places to find absinthe) and my partner had the Manhattan sampler. I will stay here again, simply because it is so central to the symphony and max line, but sadly the hotel has a lost a little of its glamour. read more

We came to Portland to attend the PR7s All-Stars vs USA Rugby event at Providence Park and wanted to stay as close as we could, and needed a place that had EV charging, so we decided on the Hotel deLuxe. It was about a 5 minute walk to the stadium, and they had level 1 chargers so win-win for us. When we got there, we walked up the stairs and were promptly greeted. We received our room keys, and told how to get into the garage and where the EV charger were. At this point, I decided to look around and took in the scenery. I felt like we were transported back to a different era. It was very well done. We took the elevator up to our floor and proceeded to our room. It was spacious and comfortable, but couldn't stay long since we had dinner reservations. Skipping to later that night, we decided to go to the Driftwood Room for a nightcap, and were wowed by the dark but comforting interior resonating with other patrons enjoying themselves throughout the bar. Whoa. We're blown away at the catfishing going on at Hotel deLuxe these days. The lobby is beautiful and we love The Driftwood Room lobby bar, but we decided to get a room tonight and could not be more disappointed. The room is in tatters. When I talked to the front desk, they told me they were sorry but that ALL OF THEIR ROOMS LOOKED THAT WAY and there was nothing they could do to rectify the situation. I'm not above staying at a divey motel when that's what I'm getting myself into. But when I pay to stay at a supposedly nice hotel with a fancy lobby for my birthday. I expect SOME level of luxury... hell, even cleanliness... anything to make the night feel special would have been appreciated. So. If staying in Portland. Please know there are many better options in this price range. This is the worst of the "nice" Portland hotels I've experienced. read more

This place was "ok." The hotel is very "Portland" and eclectic. Room I had was small and old. Stains on the carpet. They have zero on-site parking and you have to park in a garage one block over which will run you an additional $40 bucks, and if you have a vehicle larger than a Prius, good luck. Not the safest of locations as there seems to be a lot of homeless people everywhere, so if you plan on walking the streets I'd recommend pairing up with another person. read more

Hidden fees and dusty unmaintained room. This hotel advertised itself as downtown Portland near everything...it was neat NOTHING. Charged us a $65 amenities fee when there were none. Rooms only get refreshed every three days. Our room was dusty and the refrigerator didn't work. Called the front desk and he said he'd have one sent the next day and he didn't. Just disappointing and even more so when I opened my credit card bill to a charge that no one told me I was going to be charged. They should have paid us for dusting the room and cleaning up after ourselves. If we have known about those hidden fees I would have stayed at an air bnb. read more

Found this place by Googling "hotels near the Pittock Mansion" and were pleasantly surprised. We LOVED the historic vibe and the amazing Old Hollywood Glam theme. If I had more time I would've toured every floor to see all the pix...but the huge main pic in the lobby changes often = fun! The rooms are small because it's historical...but ours was lovely, clean, and functional. I was charmed by how the fridge and the safe were built into the bureau = how clever! Bed was super comfy. Little soaps smelled amazing! (Cedar wood cypress; nice touch.) There was no coffee in room, but a lovely selection in the morning lobby, with piped in piano music that was so appropriate and made me actually feel glamorous. The employees Tyler and Cat were over the top fun and helpful, and we enjoyed a DELUXE dinner at Gracie's/a beer from Driftwood, and appreciated their employees Mila and Grace. Steak was fantastic. We got great advice to take a morning walk to check out the Sat morning art market, and it was a real highlight. So enjoyable. We LOVED the dimming lamps, fluffy pillows, TALL shower heads, and great hot water. (From the other reviews, which I didn't see ahead of time, I guess it was recently fixed?) The ONLY concern I had was a warning in the parking garage to "not even leave a stick of gum visible in the car" - which we needed and had no issues. I'd DEFINITELY stay here again! This is my favorite hotel in the city, by far! In a city going to ruin, this is a luxurious escape and takes you back in time. We saw the Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall in Key Largo on their rooftop during their old Hollywood movie summer series. That was soo fun! They even had beer and wine for sale up top and those really nice trailer bathrooms at the street level (the movie played on their parking garage across the street) Brunch at Gracie's is not only delicious but a very fancy place for us girls to get dolled up and go when we want to spoil ourselves. Usually we go full glam. It's where you would picture the Gabor sisters going for a champagne or dinner. The Driftwood Lounge reminds me of somewhere the Rat Pack would hang out. It's dark and mysterious and has that old Vegas vibe. You can almost smell Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Sammy Davis, Jr's cigars (but you don't because it is smoke free). They make very good Old Fashioned's and have a great happy hour. Covid may have taken that away for awhile - so you may want to call first to make sure they've been allowed to bring it back. I also love to take our glam photos in their lobby. They have a wall with a video screen (framed in mirrored glass like art) that displays old Hollywood movie scenes of famous couples. Their rooms are glamorous. My friend rented one for her birthday and we had champagne upstairs before we all went to dinner at Gracie's. They even have a Marlene Dietrich suite! If you have special occasion coming up or just want an excuse to get really glammed up - Hotel deLuxe is where you want to go. It's disappointing to see how this property has slid downhill over the past 4 years. The only reason I give it 2 stars is because Gracie's is ,literally, their saving grace. We live 1.5 hours north of Portland. Portland is our "go to" for short staycations. I booked their corner suite. The room had not been cleaned thoroughly and there were large stains in the carpet. We ended up spending over 2 hours dealing with housekeeping who, when they did supposedly "re-clean" the room had to be called again. Not how we wanted to spend our holiday vaca time. We were so disappointed we ended up leaving. Cleaning a room is not rocket science. Stains in the carpet can be scheduled for spot cleaning. This is a no-brainer yet, this is the 2nd time we have had this experience. I'm so disappointed that management doesn't seem to know how to manage this propery that has such amazing potential. read more

I have stayed here a number of times; by myself, with my husband and once with my mom. Always have received excellent service. A very attentive staff. The rooms are small but very comfortable. It might be my favorite place to stay because of it's unusual but very walkable location. The decor is lush but approachable, and fun. The other added bonus is the Driftwood Lounge tucked into the corner of the lobby. It takes classic lounge to another level; dark, moody, sexy and way cool. We came here for our 12th anniversary from Kansas, opting to stay in proper hotel over an AirBnB for once. Here's what you need to know: 1. This is a *historic* west coast hotel, so rooms are tiny-tiny and amenities are few by modern standards (and we tend to stay at LaQuintas, so take that as you will.) While very tasteful and elegant, most basement Airbnbs we looked at were bigger than these rooms, so prepare yourself. We were staying here a week in the second-to-top tier room and we still ended up upgrading to the top tier room so we had a place to sit besides the bed. While the biggest room is only about the size of a modern motel room, we were much more comfortable. 2. There are no kitchenettes but you do have tiny private bathrooms, which have lovely historically-inspired chrome hardware. Our big room bathroom had multiple large built-in shelves while our small bathroom had a single small shelf, which wasn't ideal for two people for the length of time we were staying. Maybe bring a 3M removable hook if you need to hang anything anywhere beyond above the toilet, under the sink or on the door. 3. I've never spent time in a hotel bar, but we found ourselves going down to the Driftwood a lot on our trip. It's also quite small and can get loud, but it has chill vintage vibes, friendly young bartenders who make good drinks and a small dinner menu if you just don't feel like going out. The hotel restaurant is pricey but it's also worth a visit at least once; we were very happy with the high quality breakfast we had there and the atmosphere is delightfully old Hollywood. 4. You are a 3 minute walk away from the Max train which meant we never needed a car while we were in town except to drive to the beach. Not needing to park is awesome and highly recommended. 5. There's a donut shop near the train station and plenty of good restaurants within 5-10 min walking distance, including a rad boardgame restaurant called Mox, which is open til midnight. Everyone working the hotel was friendly and our experience was quiet, comfortable, relaxing and unique. Just plan on being a little minimalistic and enjoying the history around you! read more

I stayed there in October 2019 for a couple of days, and it was one of my best hotel experiences. It was a surprising oasis of beauty and old Hollywood glamour set in downtown Portland. The decor, the bar/restaurant scene, the overall service, everything was classy and i thought if I ever came back to Portland, I would stay there again. Today, I checked the newer reviews, and I am concerned because the newer reviews do not reflect my 2019 experience. Perhaps the hotel has changed hand and the new owners do not care. Based on my previous experience, it will still be the hotel of choice for me to stay in should I come to Portland, and I will then update my experience. read more

Last weekend I stayed here for two nights, first night was good, second night we found a bed bug on our blanket at like 11pm (room 706). I appreciate the staff for helping us change the room into an upgraded suite in a different part of the hotel but I also couldn't really enjoy it as never dealing with bed bugs before I spent the whole rest of the night obsessively searching on my phone for what to do. So We were blow drying everything we brought one by one and left early the next day to go to a laundromat:( Next day we checked out they asked how was our say and we said "it was okay:/" and they gave free parking for the second night, didn't charge us our amenity fee, and $50 off our food bill in the restaurant. Okay now that I got home I didn't realize all the extra work I had to do to prevent an infestation. I'll attach my email of all the details I sent to the staff to get a refund, because of course everywhere you read they suggest you demand a refund and I'm a non confrontational person but after spending the last week in constant paranoia I felt like DAMN I did not deserve this I talked to the staff member Hannah today (one week since check out) and she said she couldn't do anything about the room rate after it's been closed but she said we got about $170 off in compensation. She also stated the day we checked out an exterminator came and checked the room at 7:30am and the room was cleared and no signs of bed bugs. I really really wish they told me that sooner of the day we checked out because they would have known by then and I would have had so much peace of mind!!! I feel a little better now knowing there wasn't an infestation in the room but I really wish I was followed up with sooner and was notified of those results. Overall staff was nice and the rooms are small and outdated but bed was comfy. Hotel lobby was smaller than expected. Probably would not stay here again. read more

I thought this would be a nice place to stay since my Venture X card has it as part of their "Lifestyle Collection" Stayed there for 3 nights. When arriving at our room the room, there were potato chip crumbs on the floor, and one of the bottles of water was less than full. We addressed the water issue the following day when we were passing by the reception area and they said they would take care of it. Coffee is provided in the lobby, but be careful because it might come with coffee grounds that will make you choke. They never fixed the water bottle situation, and on our day of checkout we reminded the same woman at the front desk. We were carrying our bags out at the time, so when we were done and ready to pick up our receipt, she said "we've taken care of all your charges and youre all set". We assumed we were not going to be charged for the breakfast we had the day before, especially since she did not give me a receipt on our way out. Two days later, I see a charge on my credit card statement and when I called to find out about it, every time I would ask a question, the woman answering would say how I called during checkin and she was busy. In the middle of asking my questions, she just hung up on me. I haven't received my statement of charge, so if you do stay here, make sure to get it before you physically leave the hotel. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE! My car was broken into in the garage associated with the hotel and they don't seem to care. There is no elevator in the garage so moving bags is super fun and there was a homeless person sleeping in the garage stairwell. They also have an amenity fee that they don't mention until check in and happy hour is not advertised properly. read more

To me, this place is automatically capped at two stars since they're one of those dishonest hotels that tries to rip you off with hidden horseshit fees at every opportunity. First though, I suppose I can give them credit for having pleasant rooms. Mine seemed roughly as nice as a middle-end chain like a Hampton / Holiday Inn -- comfy bed, nice lighting, effective A/C, and a stylish bathroom. The main points of distinction are 1. some anonymous Hollywood-inspired framed photo hanging on the wall, 2. extra squishy pillows, and 3. the room being bizarrely small. Anyway, onto the horseshit. First, they tack on a "Resort Fee" of $25/night, even though there's no aspect of this hotel fitting that description. When I asked for an explanation, I was told "access to our gym" and "a free daily can of Coke/Sprite"... whoopee. NOT included in that fee are amenities that are common at this class level, such as breakfast (nope) or parking (using their garage runs an extra $30). Add up these three items and you're looking at an extra $75 per day (on top of their ~$200 base price). Even on top of all that, they still try their damnest to sneak in yet more extra charges. You may notice how the front desk staff are in the habit of offering free bottled water; you also notice that when you first check into your room, there are two bottles waiting on the desk. Well, the ones they HAND you are free, but if you drink the ones on the DESK, you get milked out of another $14 (there's no way to know this until checking your bill). Yep, they set fee traps. For anyone who'd rather avoid places that stoop to this nonsense, here are the four Portland hotels under the same corporate umbrella: -Hotel DeLuxe -Hotel Lucia -Dossier Hotel -Sentinel Note that the first two spam Hotwire with deals all the time. If I had to stay in a downtown hotel again, I'd probably go with Hampton Inn -- there's one a half-mile to the east. Although what I actually did after this DeLuxe debacle was switch to the Viking Motel, four miles north. It was more downscale but still decent, came out to just under $100, and parking was free. Portland traffic is modest compared to the other west coast cities, so if you're coming in by car, there's not much need to stay downtown. read more

High Tea for three! It was supposed to be four but you know that one friend who shows up an hour late, if they show up? Thankfully the deLuxe was a lot nicer about it than we were but the deLuxe has some serious class. From start to finish that is what we got which was lovely. I have had high tea served many times over the years. I've had some amazing experiences and some not so great ones. This was right in the middle with highs and lows. Its hard not to feel fancy when you walk into the deLuxe though I will confess than the door guys were off on their game today. They even seemed bothered to TRY and get to the door though they did say hi...ummm thanks! It was just weird going in and out since normally they are very much ON IT. We waited for our delinquent friend and gave up when she was 20 minutes and counting late with no word. Our server was amazing though. The tea itself was not great - I chose the White Yunnan Silver Tip but it just really was not great and had a sore note I was not expecting. I tried to add sugar which I normally do not need but that did not help. The glass of champagne was lovely and had that perfect balance of dry and sweet. And then there were snacks! All of the snacks! Salmon lox and remoulade on rye bread, Ham and grain mustard aioli on white bread, Cucumber and dill aioli on white bread, Cranberry pecan chicken salad on wheat bread, Garden vegetable cream cheese on white bread, plain & lemon-currant scones with clotted cream and raspberry jam, lemon curd tartlets with blueberries, chocolate cups, raspberry thumbprint cookies and Victorian sponge cake. Even with the champagne and the lovely food it really seemed a bit pricey. I get it - you are at the deLuxe but I have actually felt way fancier at other places and received waaaaaaaay more for waaaay less. With that said though I can hardly regret having had the tea experience here and I do recommend it at least once...just chose a different tea. read more

They put us in a CLEARLY non functioning room. The pull out bed was held together by duct tape and zip ties (see photos). The bathroom doorknob did not work, leaving my 8 year old crying and banging on the door for help in the middle of the night. The window in the bathroom: a suicide window, opened up fully with no screen or bars on the 8th floor. The coffee pot cord was so short you had to put it on the floor to even use it. They gave us a new room after the horrific first night and promised a credit toward our bill. They did not give us any credit at all toward our first night. They should have compt our first night entirely. It was a $200+ night in a living hell. The only saving caveat, their customer service was on par. With the exception of misleading us to believe that we're going to give us "a good credit" toward our first night, their customer service was not something to be overlooked. Breakfast was delicious but their coffee was horrid. Like drinking razor blades. We will NEVER be going back and would not recommend this hotel to anyone, for any reason. read more

The only complaint I have has to do with the parking garage and the fact I saw a homeless guy literally casing my car and watching the entrance/exit, waiting for me to leave (see pic). I hid around the corner instead of exiting the ramp, so he went to to investigate. On seeing me, knowing he was caught, he gave up. The hotel, when I told them what happened, immediately contacted security, which was great. It's just sad that Portland has gotten to this point. I will not be returning any time soon until they can get this under control. Which is sad because the hotel was excellent; Room: I got the cheapest room they have and while it didn't have much of a view nor was spacious, it was everything I could want. Quiet, comfortable, and a more than adequate private bath. Parking was forty dollars. Please pull the syringes out of the former functional fountain on the side of it. And, clean the stairwell on occasion. The shower did not work when the pin pulled up. And, light did not work on side art light that functions as an accent light. This was the upgrade for my reservation done on a third party website I get it. This hotel is a scammer's paradise, and you shouldn't attend, period. The people who wrote decent reviews are either (1) hotel employees, (2) have lived in poor conditions for their lives, or (3) are so rich that they have lost any sense of what a proper hotel offers. First, READ YOUR BILL. The room charge does not include (1) Oregon taxes or (2) their ridiculous "amenity" fee: $25/person/day for free WiFi, bottled water at checkout, and assorted fruit. That is it. Basically, apply a 1.5x multiplier to your room charge, because that's what DeLuxe will charge you. (Side note: this is likely a deceptive practice that could run afoul of Oregon consumer disclosure laws. And it's a nice lawsuit for anyone who's game). Second, amenities DO NOT INCLUDE ROOM SERVICE OR HOUSEKEEPING. There is no housekeeping for the first three days, PERIOD. They will not clean your room, nor dump your trash, nor replace your sheets - not even if you request it - unless you stay for three days (and incur at least a $75/person amenity fee). Third, THE HOTEL SUCKS. There is NOTHING nostalgic about a decaying apartment complex that was converted into a hotel. The rooms are tiny, the carpet is dated and yucky, the bathrooms don't have vents (huge mold problem). The advertising presents this hotel as some sexy Hollywood paradise. It's just that - all glam on the outside, but absolute trash on the inside. Don't go, unless you have plenty of money to blow. You've been warned. read more

If I could give this hotel 0 stars I would . Upon arrival they couldn't find my reservation so it took an hour and a half to get to my room. With thin that hour and 11:30pm (which they said the gates were closed) my car was vandalized. They didn't do Anything but send me to a non emergency 911 line and they never answered ! It was also dried blood stains on my bed spread. I still have yet to receive camera footage and I'm very upset because I.gave them time to release it to me. read more

They don't secure your vehicle in their garage. My window was shattered and my car damaged. The hotel refused to give me camera footage to help recover my things and hold the person responsible. Some of my past co-workers have left some less than savory reviews for Hotel deLuxe but I really loved my stay in this small-yet-chic hotel in a great part of Portland. Checking in was a simple process thanks to the friendly help at the front desk, Madison. She was chatty while processing my reservation and instantly made me feel welcome and after a few hours on a crowded plane, it was appreciated. My room was on the fifth floor and the radio was subtly playing old-timey music when I walked through the front door. That was creepy as s#it so I shut that sucker off for the rest of my stay. Though not big, the room itself was cozy, the bed was comfortable, the shower was stellar, and the air condition kept my surroundings nice and chilly, just the way I like it. Proximity to just about everything (by foot or rideshare) made this location great but I'm truly bummed that I didn't have a chance to try the hotel's beer garden across the street from the front door. It looked awesome and will be a sure stop on my next trip to Portland. read more
