All are ranked high nationally in sparring in their respectful divisions. Belts are earned here..this is not a black belt factory. They focus on quality, not quantity. Learning self defense, hand and feet techniques, sparing, pomsae and physical fitness. Each belt has its own set of the above to learn and demonstrate with proficiency. Cost is better than most. You pay a monthly tution and it covers all your classes. Come to one or all that are available in your level. However, it is required to attend a min of 2 classes a week to advance in a belt. NWSTKD is part of the Washington United Taekwondo association and trains with the top schools in Washington. Those who are interested in being part of this competition team go through a 3 month audition to show their passion and dedication to being part of this team. They are then invited to join and be an official WUT team member after they have proven themselves. Traveling local, nationally and international to compete and represent Washington. Apparently there are many studios that accept children as young as 3 years old. They host large classes of 20+ students where the instructor can is unable to monitor all the children or correct their positions when they are wrong. The children go through the motions picking up and building on bad habits. Some even sponsor day cares and field trips (at a Martial Art studio - ?!) Upon sitting down and speaking with Master Colver and discussing how he conducts his sessions, what he expects of his students and the discipline in which he uses with his students was a breath of fresh air. First of all he explained that children under the age of 5 should not engage in Martial Arts due to their developing growth plates. He broke down and explained the different disciplines of Taekwondo and interviewed us as well to ensure our interest in enrolling our son were for all the right reasons and that our expectations were realistic and in alignment with their philosophy. Next we watched as Master Colver instructed his group of three students. It was almost as if our son was receiving a private lesson. Not only was our son receiving 1:1 attention from a Master, but he was also receiving hands on direction in ensuring his positions were correct, but he was instilling in our son, focus, respect, accountability, and discipline. Even more impressive, is the personal interaction that the NW Sport Staff has given us via FB Messenger. Anytime we have questions, they are quick to respond and even follow up after classes to ask how our son is doing. The personal touch is refreshing and reassuring. With NW Sport - we feel we have finally found a studio where our son will actually properly learn a wonderful form of martial arts and hopefully develop some life long skills that will build not only his confidence and focus, but his mind and spirit. I was extremely impressed with their level of discipline (which I expect from martial arts schools but don't always see) as well as flexibility where appropriate. Master Ji is clearly devoted to the practice and his students and has high expectations. I studied at the Duvall location under Peter. I appreciate that Peter always answers my questions with deep and considered answers, including how various moves were meant to be used in practical applications and best practices for honing my capabilities.
