We were in Melbourne for a few days and looked for something decently priced and found it here. We tried most of the dumplings and liked them all. We loved the spicy wantans, really yummy. The atmosphere is very much like in a dining hall: loud, a bit crowded and slightly stressed. It's nice though that they allow a look into their kitchen with a big glass window. What started off as a sane lunch at HuTong Dumpling Bar on Market Lane evolved into a hedonistic tour de force around Fitzroy where I had the pleasure of not only returning to Naked for Satan but trying Mana Bar and Black Pearl for the first time. It was truly a great day that all started over some innocuous dumplings on the border of Chinatown and ended late in the evening. As I approached HuTong Dumpling Bar, which is across the lane from Flower Drum, I noticed a group of Caucasians milling around outside and after quizzing them, they were waiting for a table. At first I was hesitant as I thought that if the restaurant was filled with Caucasians and not Chinese, that this could be an overpriced trap. I always assume that if a Chinese establishment is actually frequented by the Chinese, it must be good. I entered and nearly all of the tables on the ground floor were taken by Chinese including a long table in the centre of the restaurant where a large group of Chinese were obviously happy, drinking Corona beer and seemingly pleased with the multiple offerings that were being delivered to their table. My wait for a table for two wasn't long and and we were shown to our table within ten minutes near the kitchen and the aforementioned long table of happy Chinese patrons. The kitchen is enclosed in glass so I was able to keep an eye on the dumpling production line by observing the activity in the fish bowl. I did notice a microwave in the kitchen and I kept one eye on it throughout my culinary journey and I was happy that I never saw it be used. I did find some amusement in watching the assembly line of humans making dumplings by hand, the resulting steaming process and the hive of activity in general. The server came promptly to take our order. I thought it was interesting that she did not write down that we wanted xiao long bao, wantons with hot chilli sauce, dry chicken in hot chilli, rice, a bottle of Asahi and a vodka bitters. I was impressed when the order was filled and the items that we ordered were delivered, one at a time. The first dish that came out was the wantons with hot chilli sauce. Simply brilliant is all I can say. It was actually nice to taste some spice and this recipe was about as authentic as I have found. It was easily my favourite dish. Once these wantons were devoured, the xiao long bao was delivered. After adding some chilli which is conveniently available at your table, these dumplings were also very good. I could eat them all day, and substitute them for Doritos at home quite easily. The dry chicken in hot chilli was the last dish to come out. At $20, I thought it was great value for money and resembled a dish that I enjoyed at The Spice Temple recently. The chicken was a bit dry, however it was still very good and I would order it again. Unlike my trips to The Spice Temple, the food left a chilli flavour lingering in my mouth that the Asahi was not able to extinguish, but it was exactly what I expected and what I wanted. Two people were able to eat and drink for $58, which I thought was good value for money. Although there are other places in China Town with cheaper prices, the quality and service at HuTong makes it a place worth trying again and returning to. Was a table of 3+baby and got there at 2:40 on a Friday- was told they would only do takeaway due to them closing at 3. Luckily I still enjoyed the dumplings! Nice spinach vegetarian ones. Quite simply the most beautiful dumplings I can ever remember having. The place doesn't feel that friendly, the entrance feels a little awkward for some reason, but get past that, sit down and enjoy some absolutely delicious treats. Come for the xiao long bao (Shao-long bao on the menu). Came at 5:30pm right when it opened and didn't have to wait. Seemed popular as the host was asking everyone coming in if they had reservations. If not, some of us has to be done by 7pm. That part didn't really affect me since I was there to try a few dishes and still had dinner reservations later that night. We ordered: Xiao long bao - best dish we ordered Wontons in chili sauce - 2nd favorite Hot and sour soup - pretty good Shredded turnip pastries - nice and crispy Prawn dumpling with spinach - was ok, didn't love it A very casual restaurant on a side alley. The short version of Hutong is that the food is epic. You don't go there expecting good or even polite service. Know that you will eat some of the best dumplings out there though. I never go past the Chilli Wontons. My advice is to embrace takeaway. Order over the phone, go collect, eat somewhere you can relax and enjoy. read more

Quick delivery of a lot of very tasty dumplings, including the shao-long bao. Chinese tea was fresh, tasty and attentively refilled (response time of under 5 seconds when we had emptied to pot). Very nice dumplings - I don't eat anything else here but the steamed shaolong bao. I have tried other things but in the end it's only worthwhile, in my opinion, to eat the shaolong bao. They are delicious and based on the flavour I would have rated Hutong higher but I've taken into account the price. For what you get it is on the pricey side. The shop ambience is great and it's in a little lane off the main China town street and that's also something to love, especially if you're visiting Melbourne. Try it you won't regret it. read more

We sat on the third floor which was a lovely loft style space. The service was prompt, friendly and helpful. The Sha-long (?) dumplings are simply delicious. Light and fragrant - second only to the Ines I had in the best dumpling house in Beijing. Really good value. read more

Best thing we had was tofu in chili sauce with scallops which was mistakenly brought out sans scallops. But I mixed it with the veggie fried rice and it turned out to be pretty good. And yes, the fired rice itself was also very good but despite the hefty price-tag, over-all this place was not the great dining experience it should have been. One dish was basically chicken parts in some kind of flavor-less brown sauce that we left alone despite its $28 price tag. This place is across the alleyway from Flower Drum which is one of the best restaurants in Melbourne. I had heard that Hutong had good food if Flower Drum was booked. Not even close. Hu Tong dumplings are truly great. Especially the pork dumplings in chili oil. Having said that, there are other places in Melbourne to get as great or even better dumplings without the tourist-high prices (see: 1+1 dumplings and I love dumplings). read more

Haven't been here in a while so went with a group of friends. Disappointing to see that on a weeknight they are mandating a $25 min per person rate, thought it was standard for this to apply on weekends and public holidays. Ordered dumplings and then a few mains to share. The dumplings from the last time I had it were watery, i.e. the filling is not solid and quite mushy. Go to lots of dumpling places (there's lots now in Melbourne) and they fare better and for 1/2 or 3/4 the price (do not want to mention other places out there but you can find them on yelp with higher ratings). Mains ordered were adequate, still a bit pricey for our liking, again comparing to other reputable places in Melbourne. Customer service and courtesy was below average, the waiter did not look too pleased at most times and took our order without writing it down, and resulted in them adding one more dish to our bill, but we did not object to that. Second issue was the charge for a pot of chinese tea (tea leaves are put in once and then topped up with hot water) for $12 Overall very disappointed that the standard has not been maintained when first opened and there are now better places out there. read more

Out of this world. Best xiao long bao I've ever had. We lucked into a table by showing up right when they opened and promising to be gone in under an hour. Everything we ordered was fabulously delicious. The Ma Po Tofu was spicy and silky and made we want more! I only wish I didn't live on the other side of the world. We went there on a Friday night last month, we were advised to book in advance when we called to check. The table was ready when we arrived. The food was yummy! especially recommend the Xia Long Bao and eggplant with scallops (though it was a big oily dish but good nonetheless). Down side is that we were surrounded by big groups (10 people or more on 2 sides) and the sound of chattering was so loud that we could not really enjoy our conversation (our table was on the top-level). We did ask for a change but they could not offer us anything else. The wait staff was alright though looked a bit lost at times, the captain was nice and tried to offer suggestions. I've eaten here before, and it's been okay. But last night was the worst dining experience I've had for a long time. There was no record of my reservation (dinner with my 80-yr old mother) and we were rudely plonked in a seat and told to wait. Eventually shouted at to go upstairs and be seated, but after a while had to ask to move as the large table nearby was ridiculously loud. There is no acoustic attenuation at all in this place. The second table was marginally better, but we decided not to try and converse at all. The waiters are bored and focused on getting you to sit down, eat and then get out. The head waiter was rude too. It's just a dumpling production house. There were a few tables for two vacant, so why the fuss about our reservation? We ate and left in about 20 mins. My mother's spinach dumplings were dry. My wantons in chili sauce were nice, but nothing to write home about. BUT OMYGOD IT WAS NOISY and very unpleasant. read more
