Don't think of star ratings in Europe as the quality of accommodation when you're in Spain. It's more about the "amenities", like whether or not there's parking or a restaurant on premise.
We selected this 4-star hotel over the 3-star Sercotel Portales (where we've stayed in the past), because it was a handful of Euros less; its proximity to Calle Laurel; and sadly, the 4-star rating-- although this was the last reason we picked it
It was with regret we spent the night here.
The first room we were checked-in to reeked of smoke, despite being a non-smoking room. Not necessarily the hotel's fault that someone did that, but why housekeeping didn't inform the front desk is questionable.
The room we did get was smoke free, but egad it was old, dreary and worn down. It had two twins pushed together to make one bed (which is not uncommon), and when you sat on it, the mattress sunk in.
Handsoap came out of a wall dispenser you had to SQUEEZE like a bottle of mustard, and this was the same for the bath gel in the shower. I was grateful for the shower I took that morning at our other hotel, so I could avoid another dreadful experience at the hotel.
The location is great...like I said, for its proximity to Calle Laurel, and within the same pedestrian-ish block are cafes and bars if you don't feel like doing a tapas crawl.
I can't say I recommend this place, but if Lorgroño is sold out, and this is the only place available, it's good enough. Just don't expect anything special, quaint or charming about this place. read more
