I enrolled my son who was finishing up 3rd grade at Huntington last May 2016 after noticing his struggles with reading and writing. He had difficulty understanding what he was reading, communicating ideas clearly, identifying main ideas, and summarizing texts - all of which were part of his 3rd grade curriculum. Huntington administered an initial evaluation, which comprised of a number of diagnostic and achievement tests. The test took 3-4 hours over 2 days and the result basically indicated that my son was only in the 2nd - 3rd grade level. So the Center Director recommended a program that required 105 hours at $60/hour and told me that this will get him to beginning of 5th grade level (a grade above his upcoming school year). Naturally I committed to the program - after all, he was entering 4th grade and was way behind.
We spent 3 hours a day, 3-4 times a week at the center over the summer. My son had 1-1 instruction and was retested a number of times to measure improvement. The Director of the Center went on maternity leave so the Managing Director kept me informed of my son's progress throughout with monthly meetings and I was told he was making significant improvement and was well on track. At the end of the summer, my son was "supposedly" at or above 4th grade level.
My son entered 4th grade and we continued with Huntington to complete the 105 hours recommended. At our first parent-teacher conference, his teacher informed us that after doing initial test on all students, the result indicated that my son was only at 3rd grade level. Huntington was immediately made aware of the situation. The Managing Director told me that my son probably had an "off day" in school and that is why he scored poorly, because all of the tests they administered in the center says otherwise. During this time, the Director of the Center had returned from maternity leave and decided to meet with my son's teacher to get more information. After the meeting, she came up with another program to see if it could help him. He was placed in a larger group setting with 3-4 other students for approx. 3 weeks. It was not until this time (in November) that Huntington picked up on his issues. My son did better when there was 1-1 instruction but could not perform independently. He did well at the center but it obviously failed to translate in school. He was retested again in the center and this time he scored lower than his previous tests as well. Huntington failed to deliver the results promised.
Needless to say, we are very disappointed and upset at the outcome. I am not one to write reviews but I'd hate for anyone else to make the same mistake. To date, my son continues to struggle identifying main ideas and summarizing texts. He has difficulty making connections with concepts and finding evidence to support his thinking. 105 hours and $6000 later, I am back to square one and looking to find him help elsewhere. read more
