Early last November 2024, I noticed that my 5-year-old son was having difficulties with learning. By the first progress report from his kindergarten teacher, she had reported that she was concerned that his ability to retain or memorize his letters was not up to par, and she would keep an eye on him till his next report card. She also mentioned that he required more of her time in class in order for him to be able to work on class assignments and basic tools that she was teaching to all the students in her class.
When I began working with him more at home, I noticed he had difficulties, especially during homework time and realized that there was something more than just retaining things, so I decided to test his academic levels professionally. With the testing through the IEP program, we were able to determine that he has dyslexia, a learning disability. Which explained why he had difficulty remembering his letters and most of all writing and putting sounds together. During the IEP assessment testing, I had decided to take things into my own hands and research options for tutoring and even do one-on-one learning after school with the teacher's assistant to help him.
As a parent, I wanted only the best for my son. I received a flyer bundle from the school with various offers for children and one of the flyers was from Huntington Learning Center in Encino. Within the same week, I decided to drop in with my son to see what my options were to help him not fall behind any further than he had since the beginning of the school year. They met with us, and he began his assessment that was split up into 2 sessions. Once the assessment was complete, we were able to determine that he was below grade level just as his kindergarten teacher had mentioned. My son was struggling in many areas including memorization and Alma and her team were willing to help him achieve his goals by providing him with routine sessions and the necessary tools he could use at home and school to improve his overall skills. I know it's tough to be a kid today and knowing that other children were pronouncing words, correctly using words and properly writing their letters, my son could too with a little more support and attention that he needed. Believe me, so far it has all paid off and the proof is in the pudding.
Huntington Learning was by far the best decision I could have made for my son, and it has shown how much he has improved over the course of the last 6 months. His kindergarten teacher has expressed improvement and motivates him to continue to participate and try new things and encourages him to keep working on himself. My son expresses himself doing his homework now and is proud of himself when he reads words and starts to read out loud and shows his joy with a big smile on his face.
He has had tremendous strides and improved almost in every area. There is still work to be done, but at least now my son has built up some of his confidence and is proud of himself to retain, remember, memorize and read words. Thank you for all the support and help you have given my son to be able to step up and feel he can be better with practice and continue his growth. I am so delighted to see my son able to learn the sounds very quickly. He enjoys working with Alma and his other teachers very much, even though it was difficult for him at times. He has developed a relationship with the team of teachers who are caring and give him the ability to take things of challenge and turn it into a playful way of learning. I would highly recommend any parent that is struggling with their child to have lessons at least 2 times a week, as it has greatly improved my son's ability to read and write with 180 degrees for a better future. We have 3 classes a week for 60 minutes and even though it's a long time to study, it is well worth every penny to see my son smile after reading a book with confidence. Thank you, Huntington Learning team of Encino, for all your help and continue to strive for the highest level of success for my son's future! read more
