Recently I learned the rusted metal beam is from the fallen World Trade Center and the two hands holding it up are made of nearly 3,000 silhouettes of doves, each representing a life lost on 9/11. The sculpture, named 'Reflect' was created by local artist Heath Satow, and it was completed and unveiled in 2011. Since then, memorials have been held there in the anniversary of the terrorists attacks. The memorial sculpture sits in front of Rosemead's City Hall in the middle of a public plaza and serves as a remembrance of the somber day, yet it's a beautiful and meaningful art piece for people to see.

It faces towards the street, showing two hands that are holding an iron bar. The weight of importance is truly visible as you walk around this small but incredible memorial with plaques on the ground with numerous names per family and community member, not to mention the Vietnam War memorial right besides it doing the same. One may not see it if you're driving by it on Valley Blvd but for those who take a closer look, they'll be greeted with a bunch of tiny doves that make up the hand which symbolizes the ever longing desire for peace.

You'd never know that it was here without prior knowledge. It's worth a quick visit if you happen to be nearby. The blog BigOrangeLandmarks provides a great summary of the life of J.B. Lankershim and the history of the monument. After his death Lankershim willed almost 20 acres of land to the Boy Scouts of America and asked that an obelisk be erected in his name and that his ashes be spread over the land. We must never forget…read more Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Park is a beautiful and moving tribute to the fallen on September 11, 2001. The park is located on Redford and Burton Way, right by the Fire Department. It is small but stirring, reminding us that something does not need to be huge in order to be impactful. The artwork is creative in its expression and slightly eerie in a way that feels appropriate for the subject matter. I spent a great deal of time in Beverly Hills growing up because my grandparents lived there. My grandmother would pack lunches and walk me down Burton Way to have picnics in this park when I was a child, decades ago, so this space already had meaning for me. I'm touched and grateful that Beverly Hills created this 9/11 memorial.

Definitely an appropriate placement to remind us of the heroic efforts of police and fire departments on this day. The memorial was unveiled on the 10th anniversary of September 11th in 2011. No city funds were used to create the garden. It was privately funded by donors. There is a ceremony every year on 9/11 at the memorial. A beautiful red, white, and blue floral arrangement is usually placed on the monument. It's a good time to come see the garden. It's not a large space and it won't take very long to glance at but this small space is packed with an enormity of meaning and symbolism representing every aspect of this American tragedy. The prominent centerpiece of the monument is an 18 foot tall steel remnant from the Twin Towers. The monument also has symbols of hope and American patriotism. The garden is free to visit and open to the public. There are benches around the monument for you to sit and reflect. Parking is across the street in the parking lot next to the Beverly Hills Library.

In…read more1862, as part of the Homestead Act, the US gave away 160 acres of federal land in the West to any U.S. citizen willing to pay a small fee, make improvements to the land, and live on the property for at least five years. In the spring of 1886, James David and Rhoda Jane Hill homesteaded 110 acres in Chatsworth Park South. The Dynamite Shed is located nearby. It was built between 1890 and 1900. The shed housed dynamite that was used to construct the Santa Susana Pass railroad tunnel from 1898 through 1904. The shed is made from quarried stone and is located on the southeastern portion of the Chatsworth Park South. In 2007 it was incorporated into the Minnie Hill Palmer Residence Historic-Cultural Landmark #133. Since Valentine's Day 2008, Chatsworth Park South has been closed after lead and other harmful contaminants were discovered in the soil. The contaminants came from lead pellets and clay pigeon fragments left behind from when the property, previously owned by Roy Rogers, was used as a gun club facility in the 1960s. The city has since chopped down, or as they say grubbed, 166 of the park's trees and fenced-off the area in preparation for the clean-up effort. Seven years later the effort has slowly been grinding through the bureaucratic and budgetary process. As of Jan 20th, 2015 the city's request for bids to perform the remediation work has been delayed until late February.

Some people pass by the famous "Figure 8" mural in Silverlake probably assuming that it's just…read moreanother random piece of street art that decorates the city of Los Angeles. As for others, they feel a deep appreciation for this slightly beat up wall of white, black, and red swervy lines. This specific painting happens to be a powerful musical tribute to the late and great Elliott Smith who passed away tragically in 2003. The "Figure 8" was the cover to his last album released in 2000. After his apparent suicide this spot became a memorial to Elliott. Fans even up until now come to pay their respects to the singer-songwriter who sang dark songs he referred to as "stories and dreams" that not only related to himself but to others. Each lyric in his songs were meaningful and never polluted by the standards of the 90s which made his music revolutionary. Every piece along the walls of Los Angeles tell their own story. Even the smallest spray painted images have a meaning behind them. Next time anyone passes the "Figure 8," take time to actually admire the love that surrounds this mural by checking out the small lyrics of Elliott written along the lines by fans or little messages thanking him for changing their lives. Sometimes you just have to read between the lines.

I was called to do an important spiritual ceremony here back in 11:11:11 (Nov.11, 2011) which you…read morecan read about elsewhere but it involved Osiris, Isis, the old American astrologer Linda Goodman and Hopi Elder Grandfather Martin. Little did I know that that ceremony would be one of the things that helped to bring down Harvey Weinstein and kicked off the whole #Metoo movement years later. I hadn't been back to LA since 2011 but I was recently there for a once-in-a-lifetime music festival and made sure I was able to come back to this hill. I came early one morning and hiking to the top was much more difficult this time around. The hiking trail that was more accessible in the past is now covered in cactuses so you have no choice except to take the steeper trail. You'd better have decent hiking shoes with serious traction or else you're going to slip. When you get to the top, there's much more vegetation than there was before but still the cross still shines every night and the view of Los Angeles laid out in front of you is quite impressive. I'm happy I was able to come back here.

The Rocky and Bullwinkle statue stands proudly on Holloway Drive at Sunset. It is across the street…read morefrom Dialog Cafe. These charming cartoon characters were the stars of the animated tv show The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle which ran from 1959 to 1964 and has had a great many reruns since. Bullwinkle is the moose and Rocky is the squirrel. The original statue was commissioned by Jay Ward, the producer of the TV show, when the show switched to a new network. The old location of the statue was at Jay Ward studios which was at 8218 Sunset (across from Chateau Marmont) and was debuted by Jayne Mansfield, a Hollywood actress and sex symbol, in 1961. The statue often parodied the statue of a Las Vegas show girl across the street. That showgirl ad lasted for a decade but Rocky and Bullwinkle stayed at that location until 2013 when it was removed for restoration. In 2015, the statue was gifted to the City of West Hollywood and in 2020 it was placed in its current spot on Holloway Drive. Bullwinkle is wearing a stripped bathing suit circa 1900 and holding his pal Rocky who is donning aviator goggles on his head and waving. I am a lover of animation and art in general so it is a great treat to see this statue. I also very much love when vintage art and Hollywood history is well taken care of and restored to its original glory. This is a an absolutely lovely piece.
