Grilled seafood
Sheenal S.

Went here on a Thursday night. Sat outdoors. Self service for cutlery water and condiments. Ordered the grilled seafood special with fish of the day (basa) , calamari and prawns and choice of salad rice or chips. Chose the greek salad. Got a massive serving of delicious fresh salad, a small fillet of Basa, two calamari rings and two large juicy prawns. Delicious satisfying feed all for a reasonable $16.60. Lots of options. Quick friendly service. Would go back.

Can you think of a better Fish & Chip Shop? Because if you can I would sure like to know about it! You have every option you could ever want from the local Fish and Chippery here and the local prices, plus they grill to perfection, they do incredible fresh and creative salads, grill fish that tastes like it was caught that day the way you want it and it all served in generous proportions! What an absolute delight! And my lawwwd the burgers! Sometimes you want a seafood meal that isn't seedy and greasey and isn't incredibly expensive and you can't be bothered cooking it yourself- so where do you go- Hunky Dory! Hunky Dory has found a niche that we have all needed and no one else has realised! Healthy, affordable seafood with the option of gorging on junk food. I am so in love with this place. I have nothing more to say, go there right now!

I've found heaven! This may sound a little (very) weird, but my favorite meal is a huge, fresh salad, with some grilled seafood perched atop. When it's all fresh, it hits the spot and you don't feel bad for having eaten something unhealthy. I'm sure they have more than this, but Hunky Dory makes EXACTLY this meal, only not with JUST fish, but fish AND calamari AND shrimp! For under $20 you can get a huge salad with three seafoods and chips on the side. SO good, perfectly seasoned and fresh! It's in a cute area here, and the staff is super friendly. Downside is that if you sit out front you will be fighting the birds away from your meal. Which, I suppose, makes the seafood experience all the more authentic?

The seaweed is always greener in somebody else's lake! Sorry couldn't resist a Disney quote. Hunky Dory is a great little fish and chip store minus all the usual unhealthy grease from those cheap and nasty fish and chiperys. They have lots of fresh seafood on offer and some very competitive prices to match. You can pick up singular items such as dim sims, spring rolls, calamari rings for about $1 or $2. Or if your feeling a little hungrier than that why not get yourself a Hunky Dory pack, the couples pack is perfect for you and a partner to either dine in or take away with you for a romantic date on the beach.

From the moment I walked up, not in the door mind you, but while still outside, I received a warm smile and 'hello'. Apu welcomed me in, realized I was by myself, and offered me a choice of seats though they were busy and space was a premium. Service was excellent! I mentioned Apu, but three...THREE people tastefully checked on me to ensure I had any questions to answer, was comfortable, stopped to just ask about me, or check on food. Never any pressure to hurry up and move along. Then there was the manager, don't remember his name but will remember the red sweater and great personality! Super helpful in helping to get the perfect selection so I had the best possible experience eating. My seat selection was at the top of the stairs, right at a small table where I could see all, and just absorb the environment. One of the cooks even set things down, and made it a point to check in and say hello. Not expected! I just wish it hadn't been my last dinner in town as I would have gone back again. Next time! I had the Calamari w/salad, Mussels, and Pannacotta to try. All were great, perfectly cooked, and then add in the service I mentioned, and it added up to be the best meal yet. Told my office mates who live in Melbourne about it so they could enjoy also! Just Wow!

Thankfully I was able to get a table outside (great area for people watching!) I started with the sambal ray and a glass of champagne. The ray was really good and the champagne wasn't bad for just the house option. For the main course I got the seafood claypot and some of the chili bread for dipping as well as a glass of chardonnay. First, the bad part, the main came out less than a minute after my appetizer. I was mildly annoyed by this, but in the end it wasn't a huge deal since the clay pot kept it piping hot until I was ready to eat it anyway. The bread, couscous, seafood and broth were all really good. I did my best to soak up all of the broth with my bread and in the end I had no chance at finishing the huge helping of couscous. All in all it was a really good meal and I would definitely go back.

Food came quickly at the start but then they lost one of our later order submissions so we waited ages for the last batch. If you are on a time constraint (damn you, work!), I would advise to order as much as possible in one go. I must say, this is the first opportunity I've had in Australia to indulge in all you can eat salmon sashimi, so naturally I went nuts and binge ate my way through these beauties. A few of them didn't have the fat completely trimmed off, but overall they were pretty decent quality. I thought the prawn dumplings were hella good, they were freshly steamed and hot (nobody likes warm dumplings!) and on par with my fave yum cha restaurant. The scallops (which were on the 'specials' menu), were special indeed, prepared a bit differently to what I've seen before, and garnished with sliced chilli, definitely worth getting a plate of these. Their grilled eggplant was cooked in a sweet miso sauce (I think?), very soft and tasty. That rounds off my top 4. Dessert options consisted of either sweet red bean soup (not bad) or seasonal fruit. Order both, just coz you can! I was quite impressed with the wide selection of different types of Asian cuisine available. The dining experience was more like a banquet, as they offer a sit down table service and bring the food to you, which is not common for buffets but definitely should be, from a hygiene perspective. FYI they do have chopsticks, but you have to ask for them. Come prepared with a huge appetite, and you will enjoy it here!
