Wanna know what my all-time, life-long favourite food is? It's chips. Yep, hot chips. Obviously I'm…read morethe epitome of healthy living, right? I can thank my lucky stars that Carraway Pier opened the year after I finished my degree at QUT Kelvin Grove because otherwise things could have taken a path that wound up with me being a contestant on The Biggest Loser. The chips here are so so so good. Beer battered chips with lemon, man. Who needs fish when the chips are little chunks of heaven? Not me! My dining companions, however, tell me that their fish gets an A in terms of your fish and chip style battered fish and isn't overly greasy and soggy like some fish and chip shop fish can be. I Carraway Pier is renowned among QUT students and Kelvin Grove locals for its way above average fish and chips, and the breezy outdoor tables are usually packed even at lunch time. While my friends enjoy their fish and calamari, I pretend to be interested in the quality of their meals, but really I'm just nodding and feigning attentiveness while marvelling at the beauty of the humble chip. Maybe I should re-enrol at QUT...

Sometimes I wander down the hill and see what's good at Carraway Pier. This place is pretty solid and around lunchtime its consistently full inside and out. If the line up to order isn't too long I'm inclined to drop in and wait. Carraway keep their menu pretty simple this in turn allows them to always serve quality food. There isn't too much choice in the type of fish you can order but on the flip side, you can buy a Single Pack that includes a piece of cod, some calamari, two prawns and chips for under $10. Their selection of burgers, served with chips, is also under $10 and is perfect for students and professionals looking for an affordable feed to fill the stomach. Turn around on an order, when at its busiest, can take up to fifteen minutes. But, for what you pay is rewarded handsomely. A welcome addition to Carraway is that they also serve breakfast. The most expensive meal, their Big Breakfast, is under $12. I have not personally had the breakfast but I've been told that it's well worth the coffers.

There's a train tootling around the counter but you can order from the menu too of course, and you can't beat the Japanese Curry. The tempura vege roll is very good too.

Sushi on the run has your run of the mill typical sushi rolls going around the train for you to pick off. They are tasty though, especially the chicken teriyaki and tempura prawn rolls. I'm a huge fan of the tuna salad ones too (cooked tuna) and the gyoza (dumplings) because everytime I've been there they have been made pretty fresh and hot... always a good thing. This little shindig can get a little bit crowded during the normal work week at lunchtimes and at dinner times being open later than the usual some nights, but the staff are always friendly, always willing to help especially if you have kids, always approachable and get your orders right if you're having something not on the train. If you're in the valley near the end closer to the city, it might be somewhere you would consider if you were ever in a hurry. Sit down though, if you can get a seat, it's more fun that way.

There are always people lingering in front of the long cabinet or sitting at the tables in here. It's always hard to choose what to get from the array of exquisite looking tarts and gateaux on display. The lemon meringue tarts are topped with cone of meringue about three times the height of the base and the Esperance gateau is so green it just about shimmers. On my latest trip to Le Bon Choix I had a strawberry tart and a flat white. The coffee was okay, maybe a B, but the strawberry tart was delicious and they didn't skimp on the strawberries. Le Bon Choix does individual tarts and cakes as well as croissants, eclairs and pain au chocolats but they also do full size cakes to take home and share (or not). Their opera cake looked tempting with it's perfectly lined layers and glistening top. I'm still a Chouquette girl at heart, but if I find myself on this side of town and in need of a pick-me-up, I'm always more than satisfied with a trip to Le Bon Choix.

The flavours they use, while similar to most other South-East Asian style restaurants, are always strong and tease the nostrils. For the quality of the meals and the speed of service the food is cheap.
