My husband and I had a late lunch at Humus Bol and overall we really enjoyed it.
It's a build your own bowl kind of place, like Freshii, but with a Middle Eastern twist. The bottom of the bowl is a scoop of hummus, and they have so many different kinds (like spinach hummus and beet hummus), then you choose a grain, greens, up to 6 toppings, a protein, and a dressing. The price depends on your protein (and I think you can add more than 6 toppings for an additional cost).
So I got the beef bowl ($11.60) and chose spinach hummus, quinoa, kale, crunchy chickpeas, sweet potatoes, pickled beets, pineapple, carrots and cucumbers. No dressing. Be warned, the crunchy chickpeas and sweet potatoes are coated in sesame seeds! I did not know this, and I can't eat sesame seeds! Luckily, I can tolerate minor contamination, so I just scooped out these ingredients and gave them to my husband, lol.
The beef was lean and tender. So delicious! The rest of the bowl (minus the stuff I couldn't eat) was delicious too. I love that they use fresh pineapples and not canned pineapples.
My husband got the shrimp ($11.75) with bulgur, spinach, spinach hummus, pickled onions, olives, salsa, pineapple and mango ginger dressing (the weirdo didn't even max out his 6 toppings (!) he only chose 4, but ended up getting 6 because I had to give him my sesame coated ones, lol. If only he got 2 more toppings, then I could have taken those from him, haha. Oh and it didn't look like they gave him more of each topping because he chose less than the maximum.). He got 5 shrimp in his bowl. He said the dressing was excessive in quantity and he should have asked for it on the side to control the amount. He did enjoy the flavour of the dressing though, he said it was just too abundant and made the bowl a little soggy. Nonetheless, he enjoyed his meal overall.
Service was courteous and efficient. The place was bright and clean. They have a water dispenser near the cash register where you can help yourself to free water. They also sell bottled water and other drinks, including kombucha.
It's fast food. They make your bowl and you pay for it at the cash register and bring your food to wherever you want to sit. All the seats face the wall, there are no actual tables where you can sit and face your dining companion(s). So it's a very casual eatery. Also, I don't think there are any washrooms.
Overall, good eats. I would recommend. I just need to remember not to get crunchy chickpeas or sweet potatoes next time, and keep an eye on what my husband orders and if he doesn't max out on the toppings, just add more to his order and take them from him ;) read more
