Dr. Alvarez is very professional, nice, and really listens to your problems and concerns. I can't say for the other doctors there because I've only seen Dr. Alvarez. Kathy, one of many medical assistant at that practice, is so sweet and professional. The front desk staff as a whole are nice, but there's one receptionist that needs to work on her attitude. Every time I've checked in with her, she's just very snippy. Maybe she's having a bad day, but I've checked in with her more than five times so I'm not so sure. However, don't let that deter you because the care there is exceptional and they'll do whatever they can to facilitate your needs. If you are a Mercy patient, sign up with Follow My Health. All you have to do is ask the front desk receptionist to get you signed up. Once you do that, there's an app on your mobile device that is free to download and it's super convenient. I use it to schedule appointments, email my doctor, and update my health history.

Honestly the more often I am seen here the more I love it…read more I recently was suffering from a bronchial flu. Like a hideous combo of bronchitis and the flu. I had been in bed for two days and was due back at work but knew I couldn't make it thru an hour of it so I drove to the hospital. It's early afternoon on a Thursday and they had a 3 hour wait in the ER. Well I was absolutely too sick to sit in a waiting room for 3 hours- and that's just to get to step one. So I got back in my car and called Maine Med family practice and found out that they do have urgent care so I could be seen that day at a designated time just by a different doctor- but one with my records on hand. So much better . Seriously unless it's 3am and I'm in an accident I would ALWAYS prefer to just use my urgent care!! So today I had my physical. I received 3 vaccinations and was totally happy to realize the importance of having a regular doctor at a decent hospital. Going over the paperwork they gave me while there I realized that in the last few months they had amassed my entire medical history. I lived seeing shots I received in 1988. I don't have to remember that my Tetanus was due this year. They reminded me. Maybe it cuz I'm from a big city in California but insurance for me there always meant ER visits or clinic visits. Never this personalized care. They called me to set up the appt for my yearly physical. I didn't have to remember. Gotta love that. One less thing on the calendar to set reminders for.

My issues have to do with administrative and billing nightmares. Between my two times at MaineMed facilities, I changed my name legally because of divorce. MaineMed refuses to update that but updated my insurance (with my legal name as of 3.5 years then) and my address but wouldn't update the name change. I have asked them to: 1.) Send bills in the correct name, as I would no longer be paying the bills for someone that doesn't legally exist and 2.) Send me an updated payments against account. It took four months to get that (even though I was promised that it was on its way in a phone call March 6th from a Patient Financial Services person) and it was sent certified mail to the same person who doesn't legally exist. Meanwhile, I have sent two rounds of certified mail to three different MaineHealth offices, including executives. Not one single receipt was sent back to me. (I sent the second set about two weeks ago.) I have told them repeatedly, in writing, that I would not pay on an account that was not legally mine, according to MaineHealth. I did pay some toward the balance, but MaineHealth has responded to NONE of my 12 written outreaches since the beginning of the year. Yet, MaineHealth's Patient Financial Services office has run credit checks on me three times (because the person to whom they address everything doesn't legally exist) and has threatened to send the account to collections, all while taking months to do one part of my request and not honoring any of the others. I also told them, repeatedly, in writing that once these issues were resolved and the name updated, I would send them a check for the balance. I made it clear that not paying the balance was my leverage. It is clear to me that the MaineHealth organization does not actually care about patients, just about money and process. Disgusting organization from an administrative standpoint.

They filled it as a 1-month supply, but still charged me the full 3-month copay and shipped just one box. When I called to resolve the issue, Kristy R. (Mail Order Pharmacy Rep) flat-out told me it's "not their responsibility" to clarify questionable prescriptions with the provider--that it's entirely on the doctor. That's not just poor service, it's reckless. Pharmacies are supposed to be a safety checkpoint, not a guessing game. It got worse. When I asked her how she'd feel if she were in my position, her response was: "It doesn't matter how I would feel." That level of indifference says everything about the customer experience here. Between the lack of accountability, unwillingness to verify obvious issues, and dismissive attitude toward patients, this experience was beyond frustrating. If this is how they handle something as straightforward as a prescription, it raises serious concerns about their overall service and patient care.

I know that everyone has their own tastes when it comes to personal care, but do yourself a favor…read moreand don't use this woman as your doctor. I've had a number of bad doctor experiences over the years, but this was by far the worst. Dr. Larson was recommended to me when I first moved to the Portland area and didn't know where to start when it came to finding a doctor. I've been lucky enough to stay pretty healthy over the past few years, so I didn't have to see her often, but I don't think there was ever a time I walked out of her office thinking 'Wow, I'm so glad this woman is my health care provider.' The straw that broke this camel's back was a recent experience over the 4th of July holiday. I called the office on the 4th (which was a Thursday) and left a message, acknowledging the holiday and asking to please be called ASAP. I did not get a call until the following Wednesday, which is an eternity later when you're sick. The other staff her is generally uninterested and slightly unpleasant, and when I signed up for their online services I started getting spam emails and phone calls. In the time that I used Dr. Larson as my physician, she referred me to an incompetent ENT who retired a few weeks after seeing me (so glad I trusted my gut and got out of there before engaging in procedures that would have needed months of follow up). Maybe we're getting too personal now, but my point is that this was the worst doctor I've ever been to, and people shouldn't have to suffer through mediocre health care, especially when there are awesome doctors out there (and it's not like we don't pay for the visits).

Dr. Larson was my doctor…read morefor about 2 years when I was a professor living in Portland and I found her medical care to be excellent. I saw her on at least 5 occasions, and each time, I found her staff professional and pleasant. During examinations, she answered all of my questions thoughtfully, and I found her very personable in her interactions with me. Dr. Larson's style of care I would describe as non-interventionist and holistic: she was not eager to prescribe medications for every little thing, and she asked me a lot of questions not just about specific ailments but about my broader health and well-being. I wish I had written a review before I moved away from Portland since I would remember more specific details, but I truly miss her medical care and expertise. I found her superbly professional and knowledgeable. And this is a more minor issue, but I found the fact that her offices are located in the ground floor of a building that was formerly a large home very comforting. The examination rooms were all properly clinical, certainly, but the rooms had real furniture and were warm and comfortable. In some ways this felt like visiting a traditional family doctor. Medical care has become, if anything, too impersonal and clinical. I really appreciated how Dr. Larson took care to create an environment for her patients that felt more like a welcoming space for her practice. I really can't recommend her highly enough.
