Mariah (now 7) had such an amazing time at concert and already told me she wants to be in every single number next year LOL. I wanted to say THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for everyone at the studio doing what you do for all of the students. I will definitely volunteer in the dressing room again next year and I will have a better idea of the flow. The concert was amazing as always and well worth it in my family's opinion. We look forward to many more concerts in the future. I noticed this year it was a hard to see the "little ones" perform because they were often behind much taller students or far off to the side. That is the one thing I noticed that could be improved on for next year but not a big deal as hopefully we will have the girls taking more classes next year allowing them to be in more numbers. Thanks again for everything, you are ALL very much appreciated! -Christina & Mariah

Recently, I've noticed that on my account activity, I've been attending a ballet class. I don't attend those classes, and I've been very careful of not entering a class that wasn't my respective class. I asked someone about this and they told me there was a girl in the ballet class that had the same name as me and they would fix it. Fine. Next day, I see it again, I'm being charged for a ballet class. I'm fuming at this point. I call, they say again, it'll be fixed. It doesn't. Nothing I do is getting this issue fixed and I'm sick of having to call everyday because they're not checking the email of who is checking in. I doubt she has the same email as me, and if I have to keep going through this then I don't think I'll be staying at the studio.

Inner city studios are known for having zero parking, but there are actually a few stalls in their lot + street parking + parking @ a nearby shopping center (shh.) - so many different classes for the keiki AND adults. That's right. I know some of y'all secretly want to appear on world of dance and you can fulfill those dreams here. Classes change around every season for the adult classes, but hip hop 1 and street femme on Tuesday nights + hip hop 2 and intro to hip hop on Wednesday nights are here to stay! - all of the instructors are personable! New studios can be intimidating; here's how to navigate this one: 1. The building is a two-story blue building next to Still and Moving Center. Enter through the right door that has a small Honolulu Dance Studio sign on it. 2. You'll see a narrow stairwell on your left. Walk up the stairwell, put your outside shoes on the shoe rack on the top, and slip your dance shoes on (yes, you need indoor shoes specifically for dance, whether that's ballet slippers, jazz shoes, indoor hip hop shoes). 3. Walk over to the registration table on the left and fill out a clipboard to get yourself/your child registered + pay. 4. Wait until the dance instructor calls you in, put your water + belongings on the inner racks, and have FUN! Hope to see you in class!

I was visiting the 'aina and needed to get my breakdancing fix. My friend recommended me this place…read moreso I decided to check out their open session. Here was my experience on a Monday evening (8:30-10). AMBIANCE: Surroundings - Not the most touristy part of Honolulu but it's across a pretty nice apartment complex regardless be cautious. The studio itself is on the second floor. Pretty spacious that's decked out with a mirror and space for about 15-20 people. I got lost at first but after hearing music bumping, I knew I was in the right area. They got mirrors to check yourself. Parking - There's street parking or a parking lot right next door. Customer Service - The open session was pretty fun. I enjoyed the beats and the company. Marc was the main person in charge and he was pretty helpful. TL;DR OVERALL 5 Stars. Dancing is always hard, regardless if you're a beginner or not. It can be difficult from mastering a move to creating your art, but what helps if you're in a supportive environment and these are one of those spaces. I encourage people of all ages to check this place out. Advice: * Bring water * Don't be afraid to ask for help.

My entire shirt was soaked and sweat was dripping off my hair. I was really worried about being intimidated and just too slow to hang with the class but the instructor was really awesome about watching out for newbies like me, taking the time to call out more complicated moves and generally being really encouraging. And the other students/instructors were really encouraging too, high fiving me when completing something particularly challenging. The energy of this class is nice and high while being warm and inviting too. Parking is free, and there is tons of it. This class only happens once a month in this location, and it is totally worth it! MBS studio is an all-in-one retreat for the body, mind, and spirit. It is truly the most unique Honolulu Dance Studio. They offer a variety of classes that allow me to try new things without feeling any pressure to be "good" at the workout/dance, and allow me to discover what I enjoy and keep coming back to my favorite classes. Hawaii is a second home for me, as I am based in LA/OC, but I feel absolutely at home whenever I'm here. The intimate atmosphere truly welcomes me back every single time, without feeling the pressures of needing to sign up for anything. My favorite classes are the yoga and dance classes. Cherry, the owner, handpicks her instructors with high standards and precision. Each instructor is so passionate about his or her craft, and the passion truly ignites my experience. I look forward to these class every time I'm on the island to give me a boost for my feminine spirit that lasts me well into my life back on the mainland. The yoga classes are a close second favorite of mine. I'm a regular yoga practicer, and there's nothing like a good yoga class that actually incorporates body, mind, and spirit. I love MBS studio and would recommend it to anyone in Honolulu.

This review is a bit tardy, but I am finally coming around to giving some well-deserved praise…read more We found this place through Yelp when we were scouting a dance instructor for our wedding first dance. I have to hand it to my fellow Yelpers for the stellar recommendation; Ed was great. He is clearly passionate about what he does, and he and his wife Juliet are very accommodating. We have very busy schedules, and they rescheduled our sessions multiple times and met us in the evenings after work and even on weekends. We would be exhausted and many times did not even feel like going to dance lessons, but then we would end up having so much fun. Afterwards, we were always glad that we went. At times, it was very stress-relieving and even calming to go in. This is largely due to the fact that Ed and Juliet are such nice people, and they make dancing fun. Just to provide some context, we attended private dance lessons about once a week for a couple of months before our wedding. We had no real prior dancing experience. I usually feel really uncomfortable dancing. But Ed was very patient and went through basic dance steps just to get us more used to things. After we finally picked a first dance song, he practiced everything from the entrance through to the end of the dance. He tailored the moves to us and our song. There were many times that we just changed things so that they just felt more comfortable. We did not get a one-size-fits-all type of dance. That makes it all the more special. Just so you know Ed used to be a dance instructor for, I think, Arthur Murray before he had his own studio, so in going with Ed, you get Arthur Murray instruction but for a much more reasonable price. Due to an injury, he cannot dance as much as he would like to, but he often times would still show us how to do certain dance moves by bringing in Juliet to our dance session. I think Ed is due for a surgery, so he will be up and running again. However, the bottom line is that the best instructor is one who can teach people who do not know how to dance how to dance. And Ed is very good at that.

Who can't remember being a child and being completely FREE?? Free of expectations, assumptions,…read morejudgments, "standards", and, of course, responsibility! :) And, can you think of a time, when you were too shy to say or do something just because you thought of what other people would think? Or do you ever feel confined by other people's expectations? If you relate to any of these things, then you REALLY REALLY REALLY need to do this. This was the first and only place I have ever done "ecstatic dance" and I prefer to call it moving meditation. And it's moving meditation because you have to let your mind go. You don't think about your day, you don't judge what is going on in your mind (or what's going on with your body in this case), you just let your soul FREE. And sometimes, that's easier to do when you're doing something rather than nothing (like in traditional meditation). So what if you look like a crazy person on the dance floor, sway back and forth, leap high in the air or crawl on the ground. You do what you feel like. So leave your side-to-side stepping dance moves at the door and jiggle, wiggle, or roll like a little kid. No one will snicker at you here. Everyone is here to dance their heart and soul away in all of the directions that their body will move - withOUT judgments, expectations or standards.. This is truly an experience of LETTING GO.

Not being a trained dancer (or overly coordinated) I was taken with the description of esctatic dance being "free dance." The focus of this class is more on personal development than learning complicated dance routines/choreopgrahy. In fact, you learn absolutely NO dance choreography or moves. What you DO learn, more importantly is to go with the flow, be in the moment and to just have fun! The class starts off with some reflective thoughts or themes which we discuss or occasionally act out to set the framework for some self-discovery, self-processing. The actual dance portion is a total rock out! Heera beats an eclectic collection of beats from around the world, be it tribal, percussive, techno, acoustic, meditative, hip hop or what not. I've definitely expanded my appreciation for different types of music (and movement) here. Being grounded in free dance I've "learned" some techniques from fellow classmates be they ballet or modern based, hip hop based or house/techno. Great stuff :) Finally, the people I've met in class are just fabulous. Ecstatic Dance draws a lot of mind-body-spirit focused folks and lots of folks from either dance or yoga backgrounds. It's an artsy and deeply spiritual crew and just great folks to be around. If this sounds like your cup of tea, join the fun! Classes are Sundays at St. Andrew's Priory, Wednesdays at the Academy of the Pacific and Fridays at Kapiolani Community College.
