    Hip hop dance class
    Emi H.

My daughter's spirit animal is: Beyoncé. That's right, all the single ladies gather round as we recently discovered at a Summer Fun finale that my six-year old looooooves to dance and shake it like a Polaroid picture! We had her in ballet for a few months, but it just wasn't her jam and we decided to try out hip-hop class at Honolulu Dance Studio. For an entire week she obsessed over going to hip-hop class and I told my husband we shouldn't have mentioned it until the day of her class so we wouldn't have to answer "am I going to hip-hop today? Huh? Am I? Am I?!" 9,345 times! Still, you can't ignore the genuine passion and relentless drive which will inevitably make her a star! Honolulu Dance Company is located in Kakaako on Queen Street and their main studio space is in a commercial warehouse area. There is no parking so you have to park on the street or South Shore Market (shhhhhhhhhhhhh you didn't hear that from me). Their dance space is by no means fancy and pretty run down, but kids really don't need much when it comes to dancing. I signed her up at the front desk and she took a 45-minute class for $20. This is the single class rate, but you can buy a class pack for the month which breaks down to about $15 a class. It was the end of the month, so it didn't really make sense to buy a class pack, plus I didn't know if she would enjoy it. The main teacher was out and she had a sub who turned out to be a really nice man that helped her feel welcome in the class. She learned a hip hop routine to a Justin Bieber song and even though she was off in the count, she really enjoyed herself and we had the best time watching her. Needless to say, I know we'll definitely be back in the future because of how much she loved the experience and we can't wait to see what the regular teacher will do in the class! Baby Beyonce is so excited to learn how to dance!

Our family loves HDS....the positive learning environment, christian atmosphere, instructors that help develop self-esteem, we find it rare in today's compeititive society to find a dance studio that competes with humbleness and develops character.

Here was my experience on a Monday evening (8:30-10). AMBIANCE: Surroundings - Not the most touristy part of Honolulu but it's across a pretty nice apartment complex regardless be cautious. The studio itself is on the second floor. Pretty spacious that's decked out with a mirror and space for about 15-20 people. I got lost at first but after hearing music bumping, I knew I was in the right area. They got mirrors to check yourself. Parking - There's street parking or a parking lot right next door. Customer Service - The open session was pretty fun. I enjoyed the beats and the company. Marc was the main person in charge and he was pretty helpful. TL;DR OVERALL 5 Stars. Dancing is always hard, regardless if you're a beginner or not. It can be difficult from mastering a move to creating your art, but what helps if you're in a supportive environment and these are one of those spaces. I encourage people of all ages to check this place out. Advice: * Bring water * Don't be afraid to ask for help.

My entire shirt was soaked and sweat was dripping off my hair. I was really worried about being intimidated and just too slow to hang with the class but the instructor was really awesome about watching out for newbies like me, taking the time to call out more complicated moves and generally being really encouraging. And the other students/instructors were really encouraging too, high fiving me when completing something particularly challenging. The energy of this class is nice and high while being warm and inviting too. Parking is free, and there is tons of it. This class only happens once a month in this location, and it is totally worth it! Miranda, the teacher, was especially wonderful--very kind, patient, and great with kids. You can tell she genuinely enjoys what she does and knows how to make children feel comfortable. Before pandemic, I use to attend her beg/int heels, beg jazz, beg hip hop, and neo burlesque classes. Now during pandemic 2021, Kim only offers beginner hip hop class, beginner R&B, intro heels, beginner heels, and intermediate heels for now. You can follow her pages on Instagram @heelsclasshawaii @beghiphophawaii for the latest updates and class videos. These classes are for adults in all different levels of dancing, from no experience to with expert experience! Parking is located in front of the Ohana Hale Market Place, only an 1 minute walk across from the studio. The door is located behind the building and it will say Aloha DanceSport Center, right next to this pet food store called 'Naturally pet'. I went inside one time and was greeted by at least 5 dogs and 2 cats (great customer service haha) I think I was talking to the store owner and said he owns like 12 dogs in there. How the class process goes is that you first message Kim through her Instagram pages to reserve a spot of the class you want, once Kim approves then you can send payment. When class day comes, you come in and stretch on your own then she will begin class and start breaking down the choreography step by step. DONT FORGET TO BRING YOUR WATER AND KNEE PADS (for heels class)! Also a sweat towel because it can get hot too haha. Note: Im a VERY slow learner but with the help of Kim breaking down and repeating the choreo over and over. It helps build your muscle memory faster throughout the hour! I've heard of Studio 808's dance programs but have never taken a class until I heard about the Zumba class being offered there. You can take the stairs or elevator to the 2nd floor and reach the studio on the Leeward Drive-Inn side. Once arriving, there is a front desk area set up in front of the studio where people were manning. You can pay in cash or Venmo (I did the mobile pay option because I didn't have cash). Fortunately, Studio 808 has also catered the Zumba class as a remote class so you can actually sign up for the class and dance from home by watching the instructor. Upon arriving to the class, the room was overall clean and spacious. Because the class is also done virtually, there wasn't many people in the room. The Zumba instructor was Erin and I have nothing but great things to say about him. As someone who isn't a dancer, Erin was kind enough to teach the lessons via virtual cam and in-person. The overall class was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the music better at Studio 808 compared to the Zumba classes I take at 24 Hour Fitness. I would definitely recommend to go with Erin because he's exudes positive energy, always smiles while breaking a sweat and definitely knows what he's doing. I was even watching the participants online (who were older folks) and they seemed to thoroughly enjoy the class at home as they would in studio. If you're up for doing a Zumba class in Waipahu (or simply at your own home), I would definitely recommend this class to take. Admission is about $7 per class but the first class is free! Classes are every Tuesday from 6-7pm.
