Arbor Park was renamed in honor of Edward F. Harmening,, a longtime mayor over 3 decades and community leader of Boynton Beach. He ran for office six times and never lost an election. Mr. Harmening passed away in 1995 from ALS. Edward F. Hamening Arbor Memorial Park is a passive park, There is a paved walkway and native trees planted in honor of prominent Boynton Beach residents. There are also benches which are mainly used by people waiting to catch the bus. The other prominent feature of the park is the large public art piece, Water, You, and I that was created to educate people on where their drinking water comes from. The art piece can be found on the side of the park where it sits adjacent to the East Water Treatment Plant. The park is mainly used by people passing through but I like how the city transformed a nondescript corner into a green space with memorials and art.

The couple was very active in the Coral Ridge community in which this park is located and they worked with several charities. A favorite cause was the Broward County Chapter of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. Harriet was predeceased by her husband Jack and she passed away in 2007. There isn't very much here. Park amenities include a fountain, open play space, and flag with memorial plaque. Although I wouldn't male a special trip out here I am a fan of open parks and nature. The only ones using the park on the day I visited was the squirrels. Still it is nice that this couple was honored with a park in the neighborhood they worked so hard for.

He was president of Cue Homes which was one of the original builders for Coral Ridge Communities. He is considered instrumental to the early development of Coral Springs. Richard D. Petrillo Park is a strip of land sandwiched between Maplewood Elementary School and the Coral Springs Improvement District which is a water utility company. At first glance it is just a field with some lovely Royal Poinciana Trees. I saw some people using the area to run their dogs. If you go to the back of the park there is a hidden fence that surrounds a radio controlled car racetrack. Unless you went down this small road you wouldn't even know it was there and I was not aware that Coral Springs had a RC track. It looks very cool. According to the race track website the track is open for practice on Saturdays and race day is Sunday. In order to use the track you need a R.O.A.R membership card that includes insurance. Rules for using the track and an events calendar is located on the Coral Springs RC Race Track website. It looks like a fun activity for the Coral Springs community.

Bonita Bend is a passive park with paths both paved and unpaved. It has a lot of shade trees but no other amenities, not even a parking lot. You'd never know it was here -- right along the intracoastal waterway -- unless you lived in this neighborhood. It's not the easiest to find as it's set back amongst the expensive homes, boats, marinas, and winding streets of Lighthouse Point. But it's well worth a trip to find it. There's not that much man made entertainment here -- no bbq grills or tennis courts or basketball nets or swing sets. What it does have is natural beauty and spectacular water views. There's a paved path to the middle and around the edge as well as some sandy paths. There are several spaces to park your car just outside the fence. Inside the fence is a bike rack. To the left of the entrance is the butterfly garden. And yes, we did see some colorful orange butterflies when we went -- but they were too fast (or shy?) for pictures. There are flowers -- yellow ones (sorry I don't know their name) and a number of green ones planted to attract the flying beauties. To the right of the entrance is a lovely large white Jasmine flowering bush. Heavenly scented. Inside the park are wide green expanses under the trees and several tented pavilions where you can rest and read or just contemplate nature. There is a bat house on a tall pole -- the bats eat mosquitos and are encouraged to visit, but I doubt there's one in residence. There was an empty bird house high up on a tree, too. There is an exercise area with instructions telling you what to do. But no one was using it. There's a sandy area with many coconut palms (and coconuts on the ground) and sea grape bushes that lead right down along the water. You could even dip a toe in if you're adventurous -- or just pull up a towel and sun bathe. In any case, along the water you get to see all the sail and speed boats passing by. And hear a soft lap as the water meets the shore. Such a nice respite from the hubbub noise of civilization. It was a welcome quiet space to rest and relax -- to get away and enjoy Mother Nature. So, come here -- and make every day Earth Day!

The neighborhood has gotten a lot of improvements recently including upgraded streets, sidewalks, and alleys along with improvements to this park. Currie Commons Park was named in honor of George Graham Currie. There is a another park named for him in West Palm Beach. Currie was a native of Quebec. When he arrived in Florida he was penniless but he became a lawyer, made money, and then lost it all in real estate. He served as mayor of West Palm Beach from 1901 to 1902. He wrote 18 books of poems, essays, and music lyrics before passing away in 1926 shortly after this park was dedicated. One of the best features of Currie Commons Park is the recently replaced playground. The thirty three year old wood structure playground was compromised by years of use and weathering. It also had termite damage. Restoring it was not an option so it was disassembled. Funded by the Community Redevelopment Agency, a new multilevel playground was built and it is the first of its kind in South Florida. The four story playground has a giant twisting rainbow slide along with secret hidden instruments and butterfly surprises. During my visit you could tell how much the children were enjoying it. Other park amenities include a lighted little league field, multi-purpose field, press box, concessions, and restrooms. Whether you are coming for sports or play, the Currie Commons Park is a great recreational resource for those living in and visiting the Osceola neighborhood of Delray Beach.

Originally called the…read moresands for it's sandy soil, it was established in 1894 as the first African American community in Delray Beach. Settlers came from north and west Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina in order to work in the agriculture industry. The neighborhood is located from NW 2nd Ave to NE 6th Ave. Houses are in the frame vernacular style, bungalow, and mission revival styles that were popular in the 1920's. The neighborhood was added to the Local Register of Historic Places in 1997. Originally developed by the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, as a result of the 2002 Downtown Master Plan, the park was named the West Atlantic Plaza before being renamed in August of 2012 in honor of Elizabeth "Libby" Jackson Wesley, a longtime resident and community activist. Born in DeFuniak Springs Florida, Libby moved to Delray Beach where she worked as a substitute teacher before becoming a full-time employee with the Palm Beach County School District, where she had a 37-year career. Mother to four children, Libby Wesley has dedicated her life to her family and volunteer work. Some of the many organizations she worked with include the Delray Beach Rotary Club, the Urban League of Palm Beach County, the NAACP, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In Delray Beach, In 1978 she was the co-founder of the Roots Cultural Festival, which ran for over twenty years and has now been turned from a one day event into year-round programming and a summer weekend festival celebrating African American culture. Awards Libby Wesley has received include the Old School Square Lifetime Achievement Award; the Service Above Self Award from the Rotary Club of Delray Beach; the JM Family Enterprises African American Achiever's Award; the Sojourner Truth Award; and the Sun Sentinel Publisher's Award. Park amenities include native landscaping, a small outdoor stage, benches, and a bike rack. There are two public art art works in the plaza. Endurance is a steal and mosaic glass installation celebrating the Caribbean pioneers who came to this area to farm and fish. The west side of the park shares a wall with a building on which is painted a red and white mural by David Paul Kay which includes as frog as a nod to Delray Beach's Frog Alley. Frog Alley is a street that had a nickname that has now been recognized officially by the city. Frog Alley is in the West Settlers Historic District and it was settled by Bahamians. When it would rain, the street would flood attracting a chorus of frogs. I discovered Libby Wesley Plaza while grabbing lunch at the Bear Snack Shack next door. This isn't what you would typically think of as a park. It is more of a plaza where the community can gather to celebrate events and performances in the city. For instance a weekly Zumba class is held here. This plot of land also honors the history of the Caribbean pioneers who settled Delray Beach when it was nothing more than a mosquito filled swamp.

One thing I really appreciate is that the pier has life ring stations for emergencies. It's nice to see that safety details like this were thoughtfully planned. The area is also regularly patrolled by police, which adds a sense of security. The only downside is that there are almost always homeless people around. They haven't caused any issues during our visits, but it's something to be aware of. Overall, it's a lovely park with beautiful views and plenty of amenities for families with kids.
