What a miracle this place is, really. Fascinating, meaningful programming and events. I find myself thinking that there might not be another place quite like this anywhere on the planet; it truly deserves the word "unique". We love to browse the art gallery before or after a show and, embarrassingly, have yet to check out the bookstore. Sure, some of the seating isn't plush but there's couch type seating and if you're a movie lover who focuses on more than your hiney, there's plenty to love. Don't just go, join and support this treasure of an institution. My only gripe, which may not be real, is that someone told me there was a swing dance event here and I didn't hear about it.

They have an extensive number and wide range of books, including art books, most in very good or better condition. The organization is largely by subject (and even then, assignment to a particular subject area seems somewhat whimsical), but within categories, they are not well sorted - so it does take some time to browse. Pricing is a very modest flat fee, given the condition and rarity of some titles (currently $4 per hardcover, $3 per paperback). Thus it's possible to find many titles, including first editions, well under typical pricing found elsewhere. The staff people are really nice. When bagging up my purchase, one of the larger tomes ripped the paper bag slightly, so the staff person got some gaffer's tape to repair the bad and prevent it from continuing to rip apart. I recently caught "Imagining Madoff" here, and I was impressed by not only the writing and the acting, but also by the genuine community that supports these productions. I went in with low expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised. But I couldn't help but notice...perhaps it's because we caught the opening night show and only theater patrons were present, but the crowd here at Stageworks is...not young. At 107 years of age, my father was the youngest man in the crowd. My mother was one of several people that fell asleep during the performance, but I suppose that's what happens when you don't have an intermission, and everyone in the audience has been on the same sleep schedule since before electricity. They should've taken advantage of the coffee available pre-show for a $1 donation.* The theater WAS kept at around 55 degrees, probably to try and keep people awake/prevent them from decomposing. The Artistic Director's autistic nephew also lives in the building and gets violent whenever he gets angry. While I was working there, he came out of his room, tried to hit me, and also grabbed me. I was terrified because he's a 6'4" 23 year old man who can easily hurt you if he wanted to. Because he's autistic, he doesn't understand his actions and can go after anyone. I strongly encourage anybody thinking about going there not to if you don't want to take the chance of getting hurt.

I love the location, abundant free parking, plenty of fabulous restaurants within a block or two, easy in and easy out every time. I know if I have tickets to a show at proctors, it's going to be a great evening. I average about 4 shows a year if I can. I love the selection of musicals and plays they host. There is truly nothing like live entertainment. The reason why this is my favorite theatre in the area is the general etiquette of the crowd. Once a show is on, the crowd is quiet, most stay seated until intermission, there are no concessions while the show is going, the ushers do their job to control people coming in and out during the performance. The theatre is gorgeous and you are truly able to enjoy the show in this environment. I really love it here. Service is always amazing as well. Everyone working here is always so friendly and helpful. It's just such a good vibe. Could the seats be more comfy? Yes, but that's literally every theatre. I would love a cup holder too, but that's life. My only grief is that I can't afford more tickets to go to more shows. I love Proctors, and you will too.

Second I have to praise the pizza. I grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, I am a pizza snob. The pizza prepared at the Half Moon was excellent. Crust, sauce and toppings all of the highest quality. I will be returning.
