However, I feel that we were taken advantage of a bit in terms of billing, and sometimes it even seemed like he withheld communication so I would have to reach out and email, and he would charge us a full half hour--$50 for every email sent, even if it was just a one-sentence email. For example, in telling us about a meeting with the judge, he didn't tell us what time we were scheduled to meet. When I asked a follow up question about when we should plan to meet, he charged us for that! When I asked if we needed to bring any documents to the hearing, he charged us to respond "no." If I hadn't heard from him in a few weeks and just emailed to ask, "Any news?" he would charge us $50 for reading and responding to that email. I just assumed this was standard practice, and after a while I tried to communicate with him as little as possible. But after talking with another lawyer, I learned that it is not normal to charge a full half-hour for quick one-line emails--particularly not for things the lawyer should be telling you proactively! He used up almost all of our retainer for what should have been a very quick, cut-and-dry custody adjustment where all parties agreed to the terms.
