First impression is a 10 out of 10. What a beautiful reno. The ownership is brand new as well and quite often you'll see them (Guy & Barry) walking about, serving customers and making sure all is well. My wife went out for dinner last night and seeing that we live in south Calgary, why not head to Okotoks and check out the Royal Duke. The menu is pretty nice - a little bit of everything. We chose the 8oz NY Steak sandwich which did not disappoint. It was a Sunday night so things were quite quiet but I've been in there for lunch as well and it's quite a popular place to be. The service was great - Melissa was our server, very personable and really knowledgable about the different drinks on tap. There's loads of room, a billiards room with two tables, lots of TVs and sports to watch, very bright lighting and a private room with VLTs. Probably what really blows me away about this place is that I can bring my kids who are both under 5 years. Much like the UK where kids can go to the pub with mum & dad, it's the same here. John Henry's is a very small pub located up in the Drake Landing strip mall just behind the 7 Eleven. It is a unique pub in that it allows you to order pizzas and food from the Tom's House of Pizza which it shares the building with. There are quite a few TV's in the pub which are usually playing various sporting events. They have a full bar and a bartender who knows what they're doing. Overall John Henry's is not a bad place to grab a beer, but it is not really anything special either.

The salad was underdressed, and the Arancini, while hot, lacked the tomato sauce that would have elevated the dish. Minor issues, but we moved on. Unfortunately, the main course experience was disappointing. After waiting 45 minutes, our entrees finally arrived--at room temperature. At that point, we were too hungry to send them back and wait another 20 minutes. When we shared our concerns, the staff initially offered complimentary desserts, which felt inadequate given the circumstances. After further discussion, they comped both entrees and provided a $25 gift certificate, which was a fair gesture and appreciated. The GM and Bobby personally apologized and invited us to ask about "little surprises" in the wine cellar next time, which was a nice touch. Overall, great wine and recovery effort, but the kitchen timing and food temperature need serious improvement. Hoping for a better experience next time because the potential is there.

I followed the more than 48 hour rule to cancel the room without penalty and was told that its was during their blackout period and should have read the fine print. I'm really not even sure if that is legal. The hotel takes the full amount of the charge for the room at the time of booking, not at the time of check in and keeps the money regardless of when you cancel if it falls "in their black out period" that is not clearly identified when booking those dates. You better not have plans change or have a family emergency! RIP OFF. Buyer beware, do not book.
