I own a garage door company - Joe's Doors Garage Door Services - and like many small business owners, I do the marketing myself. My wife and I built our site on Webflow, and I personally handled the SEO. It wasn't easy, especially since most SEO experts only work on WordPress. They promised to replicate our site on WordPress "for free," implement a long-tail keyword strategy with 1,000+ local pages in Broward County, and manage our Google Business Profile -- all for $1,000 a week ($750 for SEO, $250 for GMB). I took the leap. From day one, there were red flags. The new site took longer to build than promised. I was paying $1,000 a week even while nothing was happening. Communication was poor. Lisa, our "Client Success Coordinator," couldn't answer basic questions, and John, the owner, often gave vague responses or cut meetings short. Once the WordPress site was finally live, it was riddled with issues. Credit to Christian Gallucci from their team -- he helped fix it. But it took 2-3 months of revisions to get it close to where it was before. Meanwhile, payments continued. Hozio promised I'd rank first in 3 months for keywords like "garage door repair in [city]" -- but after 3 months, I had no results. Actually, I lost rankings I had before. I had no control over the site, and their location pages seemed to hurt us. Their dashboard looked nice, but Google Analytics and Search Console showed zero traffic. At that point, I had spent $13,000 and wanted to cancel. I sent a detailed email with screenshots showing the traffic drop -- not just on the site, but also on our Google Business Profile (which declined 60-70%). I asked to terminate the contract and receive the WordPress site files. Instead, I got another call from the owner. He convinced me to continue, promising that in 3 more months I'd see results. He even said if there were still no results, they'd work for free until traffic came in. I stayed -- mostly because I was stuck: I didn't have time to switch, didn't know WordPress, and the contract locked me in for 4 more weeks. Another 3 months passed. Now I was $26,000 in. Still no traffic. Still no results. I confronted them with more data -- and they blamed the global recession. But I showed them Google Trends: search volumes for our keywords hadn't changed. A recession doesn't stop people from needing garage door repairs. They finally stopped charging me. But even "working for free," nothing changed. No updates. No new backlinks. No signs of progress. I found a new expert who helped me rebuild the strategy. Now I'm learning WordPress myself and training someone on my team to manage SEO in-house. This was a tough experience. I don't think the team at Hozio are bad people -- but the SEO industry is broken. They sell dreams and hope something sticks. If you ever had a designer disappear on you before, cause delays, not live up to what they say; welcome to the club. Their techs take calls all the time, return calls, deliver as promised and if there is a delay, they let you know about it ahead of time so you can plan around it.
