This place was great! Truly a dive bar in all senses of the word Service was friendly but slow. There was literally one person tending the whole bar, tables included. Even with all this stress, she was very pleasant, sociable, and was always on the move, literally serving the entire establishment. Despite the slow service, I can't dock this place too much for it. Unfortunately, Howie was not there when I went, but I am told he is a great man. I was there for 2 for 1 Pizza Monday. The pizzas were about 12"-14", and started at $6 plus $0.50 for each topping. This Monday deal is a steal, and after looking at the menu and drink prices, this whole place seems like a steal. Pizzas were solid and a good step above frozen quality. The Howie's Red (by Geary's) is amazing. Flavorful and very drinkable. Parking was a bit of a mess though. We parked at Veranda Thai (to which we found out in a sign in the bathroom that our car would be towed if we parked there; it wasn't). There is some limited street parking (which always seems to be full). Parking is can be a real mess at certain hours. I'm told Trivia Tuesday's here is a blast. Despite the slow service and horrendous parking, I would definitely come back to this place.

Howies red ale ...Delicious AND light on the wallet ! 3 bucks a pint !

Hard to find, yet very easy to stay for a long time. The pickle pizza was surprisingly good too. Yeah, pickle pizza.

Howies is so inconveniently located for most of Portland but for us here in the Veranda and Washington Ave area it can't be close enough.

It's such a vibe for a late night drinking or grabbing a quick bite as they have such good food! The cold foam topping it off is the most delicious thing I've ever had.

Room for Improvement has been around for quite awhile at this point and I have heard nothing but positive about it. My wife and I finally made the time to come here and glad we did. With it being Halloween they have a special theme this week called Doom for Improvement so we thought it was the perfect time to visit! We showed up at opening for a spot to beat Halloween crowd on wharf street. I was reminded of Jager right away in the sense it felt familiar while also feeling new. They decked it out with Halloween decorations and bartenders were dressed up. We had Bojack Horseman serving us who was a top notch bartender, friendly, answered any questions and had good vibes! My wife tried their Pineapple Daiquiri and their Espresso Martini. I went with the Halloween themed drinks and got the Rest In Peeses that was a peanut butter (Reese's) themed Old Fashioned. Secondly I grabbed their Plenty Evil that was inspired by the Good & Plenty candy Absinthe Frappe. My wife's drinks were phenomenal and would both be go to orders for her and we both found a new favorite Espresso Martini. My first drink nailed the perfect mix of peanut butter flavor with a classic Old Fashioned. Secondly despite not being a huge licorice/good & plenty candy this drink was delicious! I look forward to returning for a non Halloween themed visit but we were both extremely impressed. If you are looking for a bar to grab drinks and want a nice and chill vibe this is your spot. Expect friendly bartenders who make high quality drinks!

I would love to know where they get the decor for this place. I'd imagine a lot of flea markets (fabulous ones)? It's hard to pick my favorite decor item because there are so many, but it's somewhere between the chairs shaped like hands and the giant silver octopus tentacle under the T.V. Ooo and the corner with all the clowns! Drinks are strong and cheap. The bartenders are friendly. There's a patio, but it's a bit small. There are plenty of comfy chairs/couches. They have live music pretty often, so if that's your thing, you'll be happy there on weekend nights. The only thing is the space is kind of small for live music, so it can get really loud. This is an excellent chill option if you're in Hallowell and want to skip bars that tend to get a bit fratty like The Quarry Taproom. Highly recommend!

Friends of ours wanted to play some pool after we had dinner nearby at Lucky Garden, so we did exactly that. It's been a long while since I have been here. Way back during pre-pandemic times during a Maine Beer Week. I really enjoyed it and would have likely given 5 stars had I reviewed back then. Maybe that is just me wearing rose colored glasses and thinking more positively than it was though. They have since expanded to have more food offerings than just cake and more drink options than just beer. I do believe it's an improvement to have more options and was a smart business move! This stop in the vibe just didn't feel the same leaning towards a negative way unfortunately. I was excited to give their cocktails a try and my wife got their French 75 while I got their Pickletini because I love pickles so why not! I suspect due to how similar the drinks are, the bartender garnished the wrong drink with the pickles so that was a bit off initially for the French 75. It was a simple fix though. So overall, I still appreciate the decor and ambiance despite the vibe being a little weaker now in my opinion. I would return to give their food a try and do believe it's a solid option for a bar especially if you want to avoid wharf street.
