Superb fish and chips and plenty too. With a big order you get a big bottle of Coke for free.

Mariondale Fisheries - The unassuming entrance, up the side alley

Mariondale Fisheries

I first went to Mariondale Fisheries fish and chip shop as a young boy on holiday with my family…read more Last weekend, some 25 years later, I got to visit it again - and so glad I did! It's been widely remembered within my family over the years, that this was the best fish and chips I/we had ever had, so when I got the chance to visit Robin Hood's Bay again, my first stop after checking into the Bay Hotel was to walk across the road, and up a little, unassuming alleyway behind a sweet shop to visit this tiny, tucked away little gem. I remember when we visited all those years ago, the queue was out the door and up the alleyway. Queue was a little less being it was a Sunday afternoon when I visited this time, so my order was taken within 5 mins or so of joining the queue. The shop is so tiny, you can only fit probably 6 adults standing up - theres no seating, or eating, area within the shop, although there is a small bit of concourse opposite with a few chairs on you can sit at if you're lucky enough to get a seat. Everyone else just eats theirs down at or on the bay, grabbing a space to sit wherever they can. I'm from down south, and we just cannot match the batter that our northern counterparts make for their fish. It's just that much better, and I've had battered fish from various parts of Yorkshire, as my grandparents were from up that way. But that much better still is Mariondale's. I don't know if it's the actual batter, or the way it's cooked, or the super fresh fish, or what, but it's just fabulous. Large piece of cod, with amazingly crispy batter, and super white fish that simply melted in your mouth (and you more or less have to use your fingers to eat as it's so tender the little wooden "forks" stand next to no chance of picking it up!). Chips are equally as good; crispy, super tasty, perfectly cooked to be fluffy in the middle, and golden on the outside. Price I thought was reasonable, especially considering the location (you're always going to pay more at a tourist location, and one with a pretty captive audience, as it's the only chip shop at the bottom of the hill). I paid £6.30 for a cod and chips, which isn't far off what the same would cost you down this end of the world (more or less London). My fish was cooked fresh as the person before me scooped the last two pieces, so a few mins standing in the rather hot shop, feeling somewhat in the way (as I said, it's very small!), I was rewarded with a delicious smelling, and rather heavy, box, added just a bit of salt to the chips and off I trotted to consume down on the bay. The opening hours are as follows (taken from the chalkboard in their window - this was something that I was worried about, hoping they would be open on Sunday when I arrived, which thankfully they were) Monday 12:00-20:30 Tuesday 12:00-20:30 Wednesday 12:00-20:30 Thursday 12:00-20:30 Friday 12:00-21:00 Saturday 12:00-21:00 Sunday 12:00-20:30 I fully recommend you visit if at all possibly, as it's the perfect compliment to such a wonderful place that is Robin Hood's Bay itself. I'll definitely return, hopefully not a 25 year gap this time!
