I want to first say that I stayed here alone last year and really enjoyed everything. It is a charming older hotel in a wonderful setting right off the main square of Xanten. That's the reason I rebooked the place for my husband and me this September.
The setting is still charming and the hotel is considered one of the better, if not the best, in town but our stay this year was fraught with irks that made our stay three stars at best.
Housekeeping was miserable and the root of most issues. When we arrived there was no soap (bar or body wash). I mentioned it to the owner on our way out the door that evening and when we returned the situation was corrected. However, in four days we never received any mor than the tiny bar and probably .5 oz bottle of body wash.
During the same conversation on day one I said that the towel bar was broken. It only needed a set screw. On day three I left the bar hanging for housekeeping. They simply replaced it precariously, but it was never fixed.
The coffee used one morning was never replaced. And one morning the dirty coffee cups were not removed.
On day three we had to stop at the front desk on our way out at 4PM to mention that our room had not been cleaned at all and that we were going to need new towels.
I will also say that the breakfast service is fantastic and lady in charge of breakfast was there for both of my stays and is most accommodating! She is perfectly delightful in the morning. It should be amazing for 20 euros, but honestly worth it!
There is a new hotel being built right outside the square and I am sure this is where we will stay next year! read more
