What made the experience even better and great was the dining experience at the restaurant, in which Chef Roberto did his best to creatively prepare the very delicious meals that we really enjoyed so much! He is a very talented and skillful chef, who puts in a lot of hard work preparing and cooking the food all by himself! We also participated in the cooking class and it was a memorable experience for me! We stayed there in 2006 and went to Pisa, Siena, Rome and the other towns, so I wasn't expecting much. But then got to see other places this time which we didn't get to see like Assisi, Florence and Perugia, and I was still amazed! Each place has their own charm! We even had the chance to see the Carnavale di Ronciglione parade, and it was so delightful! I made sure I am fit enough to climb those steep hills again without being winded quickly this time. I agree 100% with Debbie N, you got it all right! My husband and I love the charms of old towns. It is really quite impressive! It can't get any better than that. And, shame, shame, shame on Aimee T for "not getting it"! We love, love, love Palazzo Catalani ~~~ I am so glad we went there again. And, I don't mind going back there again in the near future.

Absolutely fantastic!…read more My sister recently got married here and we (the wedding party) had the hotel to ourselves for the weekend. The now hotel/restaurant was once a 13th Century monastery. The result was a fairytale setting. Seriously. It was amazing. The rooms were spacious, clean and well appointed. The included breakfast was delicious and included everything one might expect of a European-style feast. The food, the entire time, was stunning. We had two dinners. . . one was a "welcome" dinner and the other was the wedding reception. At the welcome dinner numerous "salads" were served as well as pizza. I think it was one of my most favorite meals ever. Everything was fresh and simply prepared, letting the flavors of the food shine. Which brings me too. . . The wedding. . . everything was perfect. The setting, the drinks, the food, the service. . . it was like something out of a movie! I still get teary thinking about it! La Badia was amazing - I am so glad that they delivered such a spectacular wedding weekend! On a side note, La Badia is situated just below the city of Orvieto. Orvieto is just as magical. It's a small, quaint town with a gorgeous dumo and warm people! Stroll the streets, see the sights and eat in the sidewalk cafes - and experience a true Italy.

This might have been an issue if we would have some small kids in our party. The host family of this B&B was very accommodating. Besides breakfast, they were very helpful in answering our questions about restaurant suggestions, as well as how to get here and there. They were also very helpful in organizing our return trip from Viterbo to the Rome airport (too many bags to take the train back to Rome, then transfer to the airport). Based on what I saw in the 80's movie "European Vacation," I anticipated that the rooms may be smaller than what Americans expect to see back in the US. However, the size of the beds and the walk-in showers were significantly smaller than expected. Entering BOTH flats required going up a flight of stairs after the main entrance. Also, the flats were not air conditioned. Each flat had an oscillating fan in the common areas. Ceiling fans in the bedrooms & common areas would have been nice.

The villa is only 2.5 mile from town and very convenient to get around the area. Lucilla and her family were friendly and helpful with planning some of my time in the area and dining recommendations in town. My room, "Rosa", was small but clean and comfortable. Nice hot shower! It was noisy at night with dogs barking in the distance (I needed to keep the window open for fresh air, as the room was warm for me). There's a safe in the closet, a plus. The grounds are lovely and set among their vineyard and chestnut trees. There's a pool and plenty of lounging chairs to sit outside. The main building (their home) has a large breakfast/dinner room. Breakfast included fresh-made pastries, yogurt, cheese, meats, homemade jams, juice, coffee, tea; and eggs if you wanted any. Friends joined me for a few nights. We had dinner twice (traditional Tuscan dishes) at the villa (25 euros pp), which included appetizer, pasta, entree, dessert, homemade Sangiovese wine, and after dinner drinks. Excellent meals!! I later bought two bottles (5 euros each - very reasonable) to take with me to my next destination. The first night we had dinner, there were about eight other guests; the second night, it was just the three of us. The Wifi rarely worked in my room (Rose room) and in the pool area. It worked great in the main building. Overall, I highly recommend this place to anyone that wants to stay in a comfortable and beautiful environment away from the main town (which has limited parking). Then next time I travel to this area I will stay at the villa. As a side note, don't miss visiting Sorano and Savona!!!
