First, let me say I'm a super low stress traveller and second, I enjoyed staying here very much.
But, I think I ought to clarify for others wishing to stay here that this is not a hotel in the traditional sense, it's more of a restaurant that has overnight rooms.
There isn't really a traditional lobby or front desk, no bellmen or valet parking or any of the stuff a normal hotel has.
You basically walk into the restaurant and head over to the bar, and they have a desk there where they will handle the reception paperwork.
We showed up at an abnormal time, about 6am, so our experience is probably not very typical of other guests. The person who helped us was extremely helpful and friendly, and allowed us to put our bags in our room before the normal "check-in" time, so that was nice, but the downside is that I don't think he was one of the normal people that did check-ins, so he had to consult with someone on the phone for half an hour to get the paperwork completed. That was fine because we were not in any hurry, and the fact that he let us check in early more than made up for any delay.
We booked here because of the history, this has been an inn since 1423, how could you go wrong? Turns out that this has only been open as an inn since 2013, for 150 years before that the restaurant was the only tenant and the upper floors were not in use. So the hotel part doesn't show much history outside of a few staircases that are old and narrow and steep.
The room we stayed in was a suite and was very modern and sleek. The positive things are that the floor of the bathroom is heated, it has a nice big Jacuzzi tub with a fireplace next to it, and the bed is very comfortable.
But there were a few downsides. The suite has a kitchenette, (stovetop, dishwasher, fridge) but there were no utensils other than a frying pan. No forks, knives, spoons, salt/pepper, plates, or anything else you would need to prepare a meal. So the kitchenette is completely unusable and I don't understand why they would spend the money to install it if they are not going to outfit it completely.
The fireplace was a bit difficult to figure out... it has a remote control, but if I had read the binder on the table it would have been explained to me, so that is my fault. The light switches are also odd, there is a slot just inside the door that you need to insert your keycard into to power up the lights in the room, so when you leave and remove that key from the slot, then the ENTIRE room powers down. It was disappointing to return and find that my phone hadn't charged back up even though I left it plugged into the wall outlet, as the wall outlet went dead when I left the room. But once I figured out how it all worked, everything was okay.
Bottom Line: Slick, super stylish rooms with a very friendly staff, but not a true hotel. Great location, right next to a tram stop. Although a very historical building, there is not much evidence of that inside. read more
