I am not one to write negative reviews, but I feel compelled to share my experience in hopes that…read moreit will help a future traveller looking to stay at the Amrâth Hotel Frans Hals. My wife and I booked a two night stay here about 48 hours before our arrival to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was a non-refundable booking, but with less than 48 hours from arrival, we figured it was an easy decision. What we hadn't thought of were travel disruptions getting to Amsterdam. We got bumped from the flight we booked and, being a holiday weekend with completely full flights, we were not able to get to Amsterdam for a couple of days. We immediately emailed the hotel and asked if we could move our reservation a few days in order for us to get a new flight. They were fully booked, but offered to refund the second night stay. They later emailed back and said they made a mistake and would no longer refund any of our pre-paid $370 USD payment. While I understand they want to uphold their cancelation policy, sometimes force majeure happens and a little bit of understanding and customer service can go a long way in helping disrupted travelers who have their plans affected through no fault of their own. In the end, a USD $370 bill from Amrâth Hotel Frans Hals truly rubbed salt into our wounds for our anniversary. We made a good faith effort to let them know we missed our flight and tried to reschedule. Their management could not have cared less. They just wanted our money. We do plan to come to Haarlem again, but you can be sure we will not give this place another dime of ours. Truly poor customer service (which starts at the top from management), but more importantly, a complete lack of compassion for a hotel. This is my first 1 star review I have ever given a hotel, and I hate to sound disgruntled, but I highly encourage you to look for another hotel in Haarlem that cares for their guests. The Amrâth Hotel Frans Hals absolutely does not. Stay away.

Stayed in this hostel a few weeks ago with my classmates on a school trip. All of the employees of…read morethe hostel were absolutely amazing and so kind and generous. The atmosphere of the hostel is so relaxing and inviting and the fresh lilacs made everything smell fantastic. Every morning we had a breakfast prepared by the staff and there was an option to have fresh eggs that were absolutely delicious. One complaint, or rather a warning: there's a man who lives above the bar across the street (lovely little local bar, by the way) who kind of just...hates people. He yelled and swore at my friends and I for simply being outside at any time of day, and at one point, he actually dumped a bucket of water out his window onto my friends. I hope this man receives the help he needs but he is extremely rude and bad for business.

This is the chic-est hostels I've ever stayed at. It's…read moresuper clean, the decor is hipster brooklyn-esque, and reception is super helpful and nice. The hostel itself is located in Haarlem and is a 2 stop 20 min train ride from the Amsterdam Central station. Haarlem is a great place to stay and has tons to do and see if you just want to have a relaxing day in Haarlem instead of going into Amsterdam. The room I stayed in was for 14 people and had 2 shower, and a separate toilet for everyone to use. There are bike rental available if you want to cycle around town like the natives & even had a musician come in to entertain the guests once a week. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to everyone if you want to have a comfortable stay at a hostel.

Stayed here for a whole week based on a review from Rick Steve's book on Amsterdam. We were moving…read moreto Central Asia for two years and stopped mid-way for a week's vacation before plunging into a life of hardship, relative to life in the US. Hence, we showed up with quite a lot of luggage - 3 large, 2 medium and 2 small bags plus 2 day packs. We let them know ahead of time that this would be the case. Well. We arrive to check in and the hotel owner stood outside laughing at us and our bags. He did not make one single effort to help us lug our bags up to the second floor. His wife looked at us continually throughout the week-long stay with disdain, and snidely referred to all our luggage. We kept telling them we were moving to a country (Tajikistan) for two years and needed to bring lots of clothes, but they acted as if we were stupid Americans who were going to wear all these clothes in Amsterdam/Haarlem. Though his wife was continually rude and mostly pretended not to understand English, the hotel owner was not always rude and made a fairly good cup of joe. Breakfast is the exact same thing every day, bread, ham, boiled egg, cereal, juice. After three days you are wanting something different. The cat is the only bright spot in the whole place, as the amenities are fairly poor. No comparison to the hotel in Delft that Steves recommends at the same price. Due to the way we were treated, we did not spend one extra penny in the hotel. Every night we ate and drank out on the town, spending quite lavishly at times, but not one extra dime at Amadeus. So I'm guessing they lost out on close to $800 worth of extra business. We loved Haarlem but will stay elsewhere next time.
