Interesting historic hotel, which was kind of a maze inside trying to find our tour groups…read morebreakfast room. We accidentally ate in the wrong room one morning. Bedrooms had been retrofitted, so some of them had little steps into rooms, into the bathroom, etc. The shower floor also had a ledge inside that could easily be tripped/slipped on. Someone in our group said the shower leaked all over the floor. I had a single room, which included a single bed, bathroom, desk, and wardrobe. Bottled waters were complimentary and replenished (sparkling and still). The room had everything I could need, besides a mini fridge, which was disappointing. The doors were made of heavy wood with very large heavy keys. If you don't want to carry them around, they will hold at the front desk until you get back. There is a small elevator if you don't want to take the stairs. The breakfasts were very elegant - smoked salmon, meats, bread, juice, coffee, hot chocolate, tea, yogurt, muesli, fruit, veggies, soft boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, cheese, etc. The group dinners were less exciting. As a part of our group tour through Vacations By Rail, we had a couple of 3 course meals included. There were only a couple of choices for main and starter that we selected the night before. The mains especially did not wow me. One of the desserts was completely frozen, but I am not sure if it was meant to be as it was hard to eat. I would have preferred to dine outside of the hotel or had more choices with our tour group in the actual restaurant. One dinner was served in the hotel breakfast room, while the other night was in the restaurant. Maybe the restaurant meals would be better a la carte rather than made for a group. The staff tried to scare people to make reservations in the hotel restaurant on our free night, saying nothing good would be open on a Monday, but they were incorrect. We found several options with Swiss specialties that were open. The location is perfect for exploring Old Town while remaining quiet. Walking distance to the train isn't too bad and it's all flat.

In reading the reviews for this hotel, I must have been in another building. This hotel is old and…read morehas safety issues. The room is beyond small (we were in Switzerland for 17 days, so stayed in 6 other locations, none were this bad!) Although the staff could not have been nicer, everything else was less than acceptable. Can not recommend this hotel.

Our group had a reservation for 8 people for dinner in May. We arrived and the table was missing…read morechairs and some of the silverware. Looked like the table next to us had taken chairs away from our table and weren't leaving just yet. It took entirely too long to get seats, so our group took it into their hands to get our chairs situated and helped ourselves to menus. It took quite awhile to get our drink and food orders taken. Most of the food took an expected amount of time to come out except 2 whole orders were missing. They must have forgotten and still had to make them. Most of the table had finished their food by the time the last 2 dishes arrived. Seemed understaffed for a busy dinner service. The customers who's meals were so late asked to be comped another round of drinks so they could enjoy it with their meal. We were able to do separate checks (requested from the start). It was also quite hot inside, and wish they would have kept the door open for a breeze. My cordon bleu was delicious and very cheesy inside, though I had ordered with pasta and it came out with fries (they brought a separate plate of pasta so I ended up with both). The hard cider was also very good. My parents enjoyed their asparagus and capuns. Overall, my group enjoyed the food but was fouled a bit by the service. Personally, it was hard to enjoy my meal when people at the table were still waiting for food. They can't seem to handle larger groups very well. The server appeared to be very frazzled and running all over the restaurant.

Avoid this hotel at all costs!…read more I had a reservation for the hotel on 13-14 April 2024 and was in contact with this property prior to my arrival to let them know my ETA. When I arrived the hotel was closed BUT there was a sign on the door indicating guests were to call if they need assistance. No on answered the phone when I called. Exceptionally nice people at the local restaurant attempted to reach the owners/managers of the hotel and there was no response. When attempting to resolve this issue and ask for a refund, the hotel owners insisted on keeping the money because I arrived 30 minutes after the 6pm check-in - even though I told them of my arrival time and they left a sign on their door to call for assistance. This hotel is strictly about taking money from tourists and giving no customer service. Hotel Franziskaner is a disgrace!
