The bride's father had booked rooms for us in the Gasthof Hotel Bären, a typical (good looking) Swiss building in the centre of this little town, so the first impression was a nice and positive one. How looks can deceive: the first warm impression was immediately taken away by the harsh confrontation with the all but rude employe when we signed in: with an almost hostile attitude he did his very best to let us know that, at least in his world, we actually were NOT welcome. Very willing to take our money (as long as it is payed IN ADVANCE for every service expected), but not answering to the very high prices they charge. Book breakfast in advance and want to cancel it later (because relatives forgot to tell you that they count on you for breakfast): tough luck! Even a breakfast booked on a day the hotel is actually closed, will not be reimbursed, but replaced with a voucher for an outdoor place of THEIR choosing. Being awakened by heavy drilling, hammering at 8:15 am? Well, supposedly we were lucky, because "we are allowed to do that from 6:00 am on". The hotel is clean, the rooms are very nice, the service is very unfriendly (except for the one young waitress named Melanie) and does absolutely NOT live up to the expectations that come with a pretty stiff price level. The relative that booked this hotel, does that on a regular bases for clients that come to Luzern. He was appalled by the way we were treated. So are we: they won't see us again!

The rooms are exactly what you'd expect from a Holiday Inn Express - neat, simple, and well taken care of. However, I did find a piece of food on his side of the bed against a wall where it looked like nobody cleaned. The staff deserves special mention, especially Nina at the front desk, she had the area cleaned up and she was incredibly kind and helpful with everything from directions to restaurant suggestions. She really took the time to make sure we were comfortable and gave us some great ideas for local food and places to check out.The only real downside was the location. Luckily, dislocation had a breakfast buffet, which was one of the best buffets we had the whole time we were overseas. It's part of a rest stop area right off the highway, which has its pros and cons. On the plus side, there's a small CO-OP store, a Burger King, and a nice little vegetarian buffet right nearby -- all within easy walking distance. So grabbing food or snacks was really convenient. But if you don't have a car, it can be tricky. The nearest bus stop is over a mile away, and the walk goes through a housing area where a few dogs wander around freely. I actually had to watch out a couple of times to keep my wife and myself safe during our walk. After that, she decided taxis were the better option, and I didn't blame her. Still, the views around the area are beautiful -- peaceful Swiss countryside make it feel calm and scenic. Overall, the stay was comfortable and enjoyable once we figured out how to get around. If you have your own car or plan ahead for transport, I'd definitely recommend it.

No mini fridge in…read morerooms and the ice machine was broken. 24 hour bar isn't really a bar it's Off of the front desk so the clerk has to do both. So you stand and wait. Tappers didn't work and no ice so drinks are limited to their small cooler or warm beverages. No hot food available. No hot breakfast. Cereal, yogurt or pastries. Disappointing stay!

Directly across the street is beautiful Lake Lucerne. Our room was very nice, and my only criticism is the bed is too firm for my liking. However, that seems to be the norm in Switzerland, as other places were similar. I really appreciated the spa area on the 5th floor. There is a dry sauna and steam sauna plus resting areas with day beds, and showers. Additionally, the flowers and plants within the hotel were amazing. The arrangements were so nice and healthy. That was such a nice touch to enhance the beauty of the property. The breakfast provided by the hotel is also very good. I also appreciated the complimentary sparkling water and soft drinks in the rooms mini bar. The tap water is unbelievably delicious and has a nice mouth feel. It is clear the water in general is soft. After showering my hair felt soft, and using the Dyson hair dryer provided made my hair feel soft and silky. It really is the best of the best, I'm so lucky to have stayed here.

Their English speaking skills were very good and the process was smooth. Absolutely stunning vies and great experience. So happy Viking put us up here for our first time visit to Switzerland.

This hotel was booked through Viking Cruises for the end of our river cruise. It is a beautiful hotel with really good customer service. The morning breakfast was included with our package, and it was very good. Besides the price the other complaint that I had was that the stand-alone shower was smaller than the one on our cruise ship.
