Maybe a bit too nice for a B&B: one feels somewhat in a museum where one has to be careful not to hit an old china pot by accident. The hotel has this old world charm and is a bit dated but that adds to the charm. Their breakfast buffet was the healthiest I ever EVER seen in my life. I could easily hear my neighbors next door! Luckily, activity died down around 11 pm. Location is far enough away from the city center that you don't have to deal with too much traffic but near enough that it is an easy walk. It is a charming little place and we would have liked more time to explore it. Our room was small but comfortable and the bathroom was modern in comparison to the bedroom. They arranged for our taxi back to the train station when it was time to leave.

This is a small hotel within walking distance of the market. We walked from the train station. That walk was about 1 mile from train station. All roads and sidewalks are cobblestone. It was doable but a little challenging with our suitcases. I paid extra for the breakfast and room with the view. It was so worthwhile. We often opened the shutters and enjoyed the view while sipping a nice bottle of French wine. This town is well worth exploring. It is very walkable with 54 bridges crossing the beautiful canals. The architecture is of 14, 15 and 16th century. Thank goodness the beauty was not destroyed by WW 2. Downside for me, the woman who checked us in seemed so bored, unhelpful, and actually annoyed. She was only interested in giving a standard spiel. We asked a question about the trains and she gave us her standard 'go back to the train station and ask them' spiel. The fellow checking us out the next day, same thing. Annoyed that we interrupted his coffee and chat with some fellow in their food service area when we asked to check out. The room lighting was about as helpful as a candle. Very poor lighting. To me the town folks seemed annoyed at the tourists in general even though it appears to be the city's main source of revenue. The market place was full of kitch from China as were many of the shops. The food was atrocious. The beer is good, the waffles are great, the chocolate is divine. Would unfortunately recommend a pass on the hotel as well as Bruges. You can get their chocolate in Paris.

Being in the Flemish part of Belgium, everyone speaks Dutch, German, French and English, all equally well. The location is extremely convenient being only a few minutes walk to the beach and directly at the Blankenberge Belgian Rail Station (Gare). It is directly off the main road into Blankenberge. The hotel is clean, neat and nicely appointed. They offer breakfast in the morning and have a small but comfortable lounge for drinks. Despite its location the noise level is quite low inside the hotel. The hotel provides a fruit snack, tea, coffee and a couple bottles of water for you. Blankenberge is also close to the Belgian port of Zeebruge and the fashionable city of Ostend. It's also only a fifteen minute drive from Bruges. One huge benefit of staying in Blankenberge over Ostend or Bruges is the price of everything is more reasonable, there are less people and the overall atmosphere is less touristy than the other cities. There is ample nightlife and if you want more you can either take the train or drive to Ostend or Bruges for just a few euros. One warning though, they don't have a parking lot or garage so you can attempt to find overnight street parking (good luck) or you can do what most guests do and park in the parking garage at the train station. It's twenty to thirty euros per night to park there so make sure you add that into your trip costs. When I'm back in this part of Belgium I'll happily stay here again.

It was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary and they really went out of their way to make our stay special. From the moment we arrived, we felt right at home, we were greeted by name with warmth and the staff went above and beyond to ensure our stay was flawless. The rooms are beautifully designed, blending modern comforts with classic touches that capture the essence of Bruges' old-world charm. Each detail, from the soft linens to the well-curated decor, made for a truly relaxing and peaceful retreat. I loved the bathtub that had air jets and the huge rain shower head, getting out into a fluffy bathrobe was the best. The hotel's breakfast was a standout, offering a delightful spread that includes fresh pastries, local cheeses, and rich coffee and teas--perfect for starting your day in Bruges. My husband got the eggs benedict both days and loved them, a very unique take but amazing. The atmosphere in the bar was very inviting, with a cozy yet sophisticated vibe that makes it the ideal spot to unwind after a day of exploring and the bartenders were very kind and happy to offer suggestions. Whether sipping on a craft cocktail or enjoying a quiet moment, the service at the bar is exceptional, ensuring guests feel well taken care of. The fantastic staff also elevated the stay, along with the lovely furnishings, an amazing breakfast, and a great location. One nice thing that separates this hotel from others in Bruges is that the rooms themselves are modern. They aren't filled with gold encrusted fake fancy furniture, but rather a clean modern aesthetic. This is one of the reasons we chose it. One of the staff needs a special mention: Benjamin, who is there in the afternoons, made our stay especially wonderful. He was always friendly and professional, and willing to help with what we needed (usually a bucket of ice!) We went to a great restaurant that we had not considered based on his recommendation (and he made the reservation for us) and had a car that was big enough for us and our suitcases waiting for us when we left on our last day. A huge thank you goes to him. The breakfast was also outstanding; not only were the pastries (so fresh, with a French attention to crispness and butteriness), cheese/meat, rolls, fruit selection and tea/coffee service wonderful--but the made to order eggs were as well. The ham and cheese omelet was soft inside and the pancakes were light but substantial. The chef himself brings them out and there is definite pride in all the made to order dishes. The breakfast room is extremely comfortable as well...we found ourselves lingering there for a long breakfast instead of getting moving like we planned! The room was comfortable with an unusual setup; we had a duplex room overlooking the canal with a sofa upstairs. Though it had a canal view and a nice one, it's worth noting you had to stand at the window to see it as the windows are high off the floor. We didn't end up using the upstairs much as there was plenty of seating downstairs in our bedroom area. But the spacious feeling was appreciated with the extra height in the bedroom area. The toiletries provided were also very nice. The shower was not tall in height, but the rain shower was great--lots of water pressure and nozzles. We didn't try the oversized tub. Everything was very clean, and continued to be well cleaned during our stay. It was a lovely stay, and easy walking distance to all the sights in Bruges. We're very happy we chose the Van Cleef.

When I drove into town, it started to rain. I found some parking nearby and a lady helped me out with the parking meter. We had a quick discussion about San Francisco, how much she loved it and wished me a good time in Belgium. I made my way to the B&B and was greeted by Thierry the owner. He showed me around and gave me the lowdown on my room. He had purchased the house a few years ago to live in and then realized it was to big and decided to make a bed and breakfast. The space is gorgeous. I dont think the pictures do it justice. Large, rooms, a garden, and stylish interior design all around. In stayed in two different rooms over non contiguous nights and both spaces were fantastic. I tended to stay out late and would usually miss the breakfast hours. So Thierry, would pack me a sandwich and baked goods before i got up and would send me off to discover Belgium with food. How's that for hospitality? Most places if you miss the hours that's that. Thierry went out of the way to make sure i was fed. That's above and beyond. I dont have enough good things to say about both the space and especially the owner. If you plan on staying in Brugge, i highly recommend this B&B. you'd be pretty hard pressed to do better for the price. An extraordinary value all around.
