This is my type of place... full of character and history. You'll never wonder if you're in Atlanta or Anchorage as with generic chain hotels. The appointments were top flight with a refrigerator stocked with beverages and robes awaiting your lounging pleasure. The coffee was like that served in the best European hotels. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the rooftop patio surrounded by ornate ironwork, cactus, treetops filled with signing birds and a view of the river walk. It doesn't get better than that. read more

Stay here only if you don't value sleep. This is not staying at a hotel, this is like staying at someone's house with a big group of friends who all get up at the crack of dawn and have zero respect for anyone still sleeping. I get it, it's a boutique hotel. It's an old building. But they've done absolutely nothing to minimize sound in anyway. I can tell you every footstep that was taken by the guests upstairs. I hummed along to the person snoring in the room next to us. The hotel staff certainly has healthy lungs, they've been very loudly talking to eachother outside our door since 6:30 am. I might as well open the door and invite them in. The noise is absolutely atrocious. On top of that, it's one thing to be a old fashioned house, it's another to just look old, as most of our room did, esp the bathroom. They are missing basic hotel necessities, including an accessible bathroom on the main floor. While they apparently have a nice bar/restaursnt, I wouldn't know. They're only open from 5-11 so if you're in town for a show or concert you will not be able to check it out (missing revenue there if you ask me). I don't really understand why anyone would want to stay here- and the hotel staff upon check in was nothing to praise. The pros of this place were free parking (but if you drive a large truck- beware, it's narrow, the 12 pm checkout time and the big four posted bed was comfortable. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I thought it looked kinda cool inside. Problems started with the bar being closed. No, we were not notified when we booked. I mean, who wants to stay in a hotel with a closed bar. They had a private party in the bar and we tried to just sit outside away from the party but someone came and shooed us away. We couldn't even be seen from the inside but, still, we were persona no grata. I thought the bed was comfortable and that's the only good thing I can say. On another note, I left a 24k gold necklace and a vintage diamond ring that had been in my family for 3 generations. I placed them on the nightstand and told myself not to forget them. Of course, I did forget them. I called within a few hours of checking out but no one answered the phone. I left 2 messages but no one called me back until the next day. By then, they were gone. I'm heartsick that the cleaning crew didn't turn my stuff in but I can only hope that they really needed the money. read more

Before I called to check in with the remarkably helpful friendly staff, I knew I'd love this PAW friendly hotel. Often spending as little as possible on a place to lay my head, I determined to splurge visiting my son, his wife, and my first grandson on Thanksgiving. Unfortunately the beautiful bar and Ocho restaurant attached to the hotel were closed, but happily I had visited both on previous visits. This is a BOUTIQUE HOTEL. For our 10th anniversary we decided to stay local and enjoy downtown San Antonio Cons: -our room was off the lobby and windows facing the main entrance way. Sound privacy is not an option. You can hear everything happening in the lobby and all around. -Housekeeping accidentally walked in our room an hour after we checked in ( didn't knock just walked in) -the toilet clogged and "no one was available to fix until maybe 10am or 10:30" so my husband asked for a plunger and the housekeeper gave it to the front desk to give the plunger to my husband. -Dirty windows in our room full of windows Pros: -Boutique old hotel w charm -The basement lounge/bar is romantic and eclectic -the restaurant OCHO is very delish and pretty -small room is still spacious and a lot of natural light read more

Charming hotel that doesn't understand how to be a hotel. Even the simplest things commonly found in a hotel room were missing. There was no phone in the room, no instructions for wifi, no extra blanket and no water. After checking in late at night I had to get dressed, go down to the lobby and ask for these things. The next day water wasn't replenished. Instead they want you to go downstairs to the lobby where they have water. It's a quirky and charming hotel but if you like basic necessities don't waste your time. read more

What an absolutely amazing experience! I dined in at Ocho and from the second I was greeted to my farewell after dinner was so special! The entire restaurant staff was personable, knowledgeable, and hospitable. Following dinner, I visited Havana Bar downstairs for a Tequila event. Drinks were spectacular, the staff was attentive, and the show was so entertaining! The event curator, Peach Gallagher put on an incredible experience! Peach booked my dinner reservation, Tequila event reservation, ensured my party was comfortable and all done with a big smile! She truly is a hospitality professional and master at her craft! I loved this place. We went for an in-town anniversary getaway, and truly enjoyed the atmosphere. The gals at the front desk, Edie and Jordyn, were very nice, very funny, and fun to talk to. Great hotel. Enjoyed my time here. However, went to the bar and an older gentleman and his date were sitting on the couch when we were at the bar. Great drinks by the way. I happen to glance over and he had pulled down her top and exposed her breast and leaned down and started to suck on her nipple. I have never been so offended in my life. For those of you who know me i am very out spoken and i kept my mouth shut. Basically that is very trashy. Maybe she was a prostitute. Overall, nice historic hotel. I had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Havana during a recent business trip to San Antonio, and it was one of the nicest hotel experiences I've had in quite awhile. Located near SA's epic and popular Riverwalk, the Hotel Havana has a Cuba-meets-Texas vibe with a slight hint of "this place could be haunted" (but not in a bad way). There's eclectic furniture throughout, high ceilings, and beautifully decorated public spaces that carry through with the aforementioned vibe. My queen room was spacious, yet cozy. It had all the amenities, except for a coffee pot (though 24/7 coffee was available in the lobby). It also boasted was was definitely the largest in-room cash bar I've ever seen, including an almost house-sized refrigerator filled with anything you can imagine! The snack selection was no slouch either, though I managed to limit myself to just one bag of Hippeas during my entire stay. The bed was comfortable, and the shower hot. The hotel-provided earplugs were appreciated, though I didn't find myself needing them. I did use the lovely in-room robe, which is always a nice perk to a hotel stay. I also loved that the Riverwalk was accessible just across the street from the main entrance. It was a lovely 10-minute stroll to the main Riverwalk action with all the restaurants and bars - close enough to enjoy but not too close to as to affect noise levels around the hotel. I decided to write this review because I feel like people should know what they are spending their money on. We recently spent a weekend here and booked directly. We paid around $500 a night in total. I am shocked at how much it was for how poor the hotel is. We could have gone so many other much nicer places for the money. This hotel feels like its more of a motel quality. Its designed to be cute, but it looks more like a fast flip. Floors were chipped, light fixtures had cobwebs on them, the pillows seemed really lumpy and old, everything seemed dirty, there is no coffee maker or kettle in the room, not even a box of tissues. They do leave you two individual tissues on top of the toilet though. Our room was on the second floor and the noise was not too bad but the creaking from someone walking around at 5 am was loud enough to wake me up. My cousin's room was on the first floor and oddly looked into the restaurant which was awkward. She said it was very loud. My husband went to get water to fill up our bottles from the bar and was told it was for bar customers only. I will never stay here again and actively tell people to avoid it. I forgot to take photos of our room but grabbed some from my cousins. read more

My wife & I enjoyed the Hotel Havana-fun, comfortable & amazing customer service. Plus it's quiet & close-12-15 minute walk to the busier part of the river walk, shops, restaurants etc. . Next door to the Tobin Cultural Center! Rudy at the Front Desk provided excellent customer service & a warm welcome. He recommended Pinkerton's BBQ, Moon Daughter's for the great view & a cocktail. We found a fabulous restaurant, Domingo's , great food, customer service & ambiance! We ate dinner & breakfast there. Both meals fabulous. Enjoyed room 31-great king bed, nice balcony next to the room. Great roof top garden/patio with seating in the second floor, easy parking & a Tesla Charger if you need it. I would stay again on my next trip especially for the great personalized service & comfy king bed & fun cooler filled with great beverages. read more

It was our Yelp home base for Yelp Spring Break, San Antonio! It was one of the host hotels with SA Food Tours stopping at Ocho on-site. What I loved about our stay: - A smaller intimate boutique hotel. - Unique gift items for sale, such as the serapi robes that are provided in-room. - Private parking lot for guests in a busy city. - Foodie room service options from Ocho Restaurant on-site. - End of the Riverwalk location. What I didn't love about our stay: - Noisy occupants late at night in the hallways and their voices carry up the stairwell. - Room service trays were layed out for full days without being collected. - Our room did not receive service on our last day, unsure if housekeeping is off on Sundays? - Only provided a cash option for unique gift items above, as credit machine processor was down for two days. - Needed more than 5 hangers for two guests per room. We did not spend a great amount of time in the room (we were in the city for YSB afterall). Overall, we were satisfied with the amenities provided, cleanliness of the hotel, and comfort of the room. The hotel staff was always friendly and responsive. We weren't upset and were able to go with the flow. The Instagram page looks WAY better than the real life visual. We normally stay in a commonly recognized hotel but I wanted to try something more personal. I literally had to listen to my husband fuss the entire 3 day stay. The 1st issue was a $200 per night deposit in case you destroyed or damage something. 2nd issue the room rate was around $275 per night. Is that unreasonable absolutely not. That's a luxury room rate. The hotel is REALLY old so I wasn't shocked when we walked up the stairs and every step it creaked or that the hotel looks bright and vibrant on social but it's dark and drab! Trust me they are working wonders with the photographer controlling their social. What I was shocked about was a cotton robe hanging in my room that cost $75 but there is dirt in the corner on the floor where said robe was hung. The bathroom was so outdated! The tiles were chipped and the paint was peeling off the cabinets. The shower curtain was supposed to be white it was beige but I can tell they tired to get it white. It had bleach stains all over the curtain. The biggest offense was checking in at 3 pm and noticing dirty dishes at the room door next to us and the dishes still being there 2 days later. I had to go tell the desk agent about it. Not sure why when the very 1st thing you see when you get off the elevator or stairs is THAT room door. We had to request our room be cleaned after it wasn't done after our 1st night. It was about 5 pm when they cleaned our room once in a 3 night stay. On our 2nd night we decided to go to the restaurant bar attached to the hotel. Super dark kinda like a cave with ripped up leather furniture that looks like it belongs in the dumpster but drinks are starting at $15. The bartender did NOT engage me and kinda gave me a stale face when I tried to make small talk! I still tipped him. It's what I do! What I didn't like was that HE decided how much I was going to tip him by simply not offering me my change back. I figured he was really down bad and that's how he gets his tips. Ok... I'm a glutton for punishment apparently because we went BACK the next night after being out for the day and dinner and wanted one last drink. Whew! I made a mistake. The young man they had tending bar that night literally stood in the corner like a mute. It was the craziest thing I ever experienced. It was a utter disappointment and a lesson learned. Welcome to Cuba! Hotel Havana is such a cool place! A co worker suggested we get off the beaten path! It's towards the end of the Riverwalk. Man, I am so glad we did! The minute you walk thru the door you smell incense. There is a small check in when you arrive. They hand over an actual key! I stayed in room 15... Loved it! There are hard wood floors, rod iron beds (which are very comfortable), and unique furniture. I had a separate sitting room with a desk. The windows have shutters which just adds more character! I loved the old fashioned fully stocked refrigerator! The bathroom had a light bulb to light the bathroom, which just added to the charm. They have excellent bath products too? These rooms ooze with charm. Now you can hear other people but that really didn't bother me since they provide ear plugs... Which I didn't need! We experienced excellent service through out the entire hotel! This Hotel also has a fantastic restaurant called Ocho. Bar Havana is probably even cooler! I would highly recommend both of these places! I felt like I had a mini trip to Cuba! If your looking for a cool place I would highly recommend this hotel!! read more

The Havana Hamburgesa was a pure delight... Notes of Chili Relleno and pineapple served with handmade chips on the side. Havana Hotel has an open-air veranda with additional outdoor porch seating on the river walk. The menu is not extensive, but what they have is worthwhile. This hotel was fantastic! From location, esthetics, to the rooms and front desk, everything was incredible! I booked a night here to celebrate my moms birthday and explore San Antonio. We were within walking distance of many excellent restaurants and Hopscotch. Upon arrival we were greeted by Rebecca who is the sweetest! Check in was a breeze! I asked Rebecca about getting margaritas at the bar but she informed us the bar had just closed. No worries I thought being that we were downtown so we went to our room to get settled in and make a game plan. 10 mins later there was a knock from the rooms department with a bottle of champagne and two margaritas! Such a sweet touch that elevated our experience that much more. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be joking them again in the future. read more

I'm in love. Love at first sight kind of love. As soon as I walked through the front door I saw the dark wooden floors, the vintage velvet-covered furniture, the Cuban and Mexican inspired goodies for sale, and the deep red carpet and walls of the open office next to the lobby. An old and ornate wooden staircase, a handful of artwork with bursts of color on the stark white walls, a bowl of fresh apples on the table. And you see the red glow and smell the burning paraffin wax of (approximately) a million votive candles set throughout the hotel and downstairs bar, which is probably the very best part (I bought 5 to take home with me). My room itself was just as aesthetically pleasing. The same dark wooden floors, desk, and chair. A comfy bed with bright white linens on a wrought iron frame, and huge windows that cover every outside wall; designed to let in a ton of natural light or keep you in the dark with heavy wooden shutters. Tall ceilings, a sparkling clean bathroom with old brick walls, and a retro refrigerator filled with Cuban and Mexican treats. Mexican Coca Cola and beer, sparkling water, Jarritos sodas, Spanish wines and tequila, plantain chips, pralines, salsa, Picosos nuts, cookies and candies. These all come at a price, but they were a welcome sight. My room in particular had a ceiling fan which I LOVED, most hotels don't have them. I turned it on high and it kept my room ultra breezy and cold, plus helped to hide outside sounds (the walls here seem pretty thin). I booked my room about a month in advance and with the "Texas local" discount spent about $157 per night (tax not included). Ocho provides room service until 10 PM (fantastic menu of Cuban cuisine, but of course a bit pricey), and the hotel staff was extremely friendly and quick to tend any needs. I found Havana to be extremely charming and understated, and I loved my view of the riverwalk. It's a small boutique hotel, so it has its quirks and it's not the most up-to-date establishment, but that's what makes it so alluring. I felt like I was in an old Spanish mission, simple and antiquated. No gym, no hairdryer, no closet (just a couple hooks on the walls). Not many bells and whistles, but it's a romantic and sort of bewitching place. I'll definitely be staying here again. read more

At first I thought it was going to be a bad stay because she gave me the room 12 which is RIGHT next to the check in desk. However once the AC or fan is on you can't hear much. However you do hear a lot of creaking from the foot steps on the steps, but not much. This hotel is legit, I'm glad I stayed away from the river walk, this is like a B&B almost which is historic, smells of incense, and has a quite charm. The room was spacious, bathroom & shower legit. The products by Red Flower were in the large containers which is only reason for 4 stars. Anybody can open up the shampoo and spit it in or who knows what, then the next guest gets to use it! GROSS. Change back to stand alone products. It's disgusting without them. The restaurant had nothing labeled gluten free or a gluten free menu, so did not eat here. However the bar on the bottom floor was EPIC, totally dark, great atmosphere, however worst bartender I've encountered in a long time. I'd stay here again. Also don't book through third party, Hotel Havana told me they always will beat or have the lowest rates. read more

3.5 stars This review is going to sound weird or funny to some. I booked this hotel because it looked cute and was near the riverwalk. Customer service here is amazing. Very nice staff. The old building is very beautiful. We stayed on the 3rd floor and weird things happened during our stay. We woke up to the TV at level 80 volume and on a different channel than what we had on previously. The side of the bedsheets were neatly folded into ruffle looking designs. My dog was a bit freaked out as well. The next morning around 10am I was standing in the middle of the room waiting for my boyfriend in the restroom while holding a drink in my left hand. All of a sudden I felt a burning sensation on my right arm and there i found light scratch marks on my arm appeared. Check out wasn't until 12p but we immediately left. It is hard for me to put a star rating on this because I have never experience anything like this in a hotel in my life. It was beautiful, hospitality was great, but the paranormal stuff just made our stay weird. I did appreciate the hotel giving my dog a bed to sleep on and bowls to borrow. I liked the fridge being stocked with snacks and drinks but there is a cost to every little thing you decide to eat/drink. The sheets didn't seem too clean as I got bit by something under the sheets. It is an old building so the stairs and floors make a lot of noise. The building itself was built around 1912 so I guess it is only fair to say that it has ghosts. read more

I will preface my review by saying that if you are a business traveler or someone who prefers brand new hotel-- this place is not for you at all. If you love boutique hotels, that are off the beaten path, and maybe a bit of an oddity, I think you will love this place. The photos are accurate. The staff was warm & welcoming. This sweet little hotel helped make one of my least favorite places to visit a touch better and almost makes me want to come back just to stay here! The nitty gritty you might or might not care about: WIFI didn't work-- I got the same "rewiring" story someone mentioned 6 months ago. This was a huge bummer. My room was barely big enough for a queen size bed. So, I had to work in the lobby. I was ok with that but it's not really set up for business travel, esp with the wifi situation. Just to address some of what others have complained about: I stayed here on a 105 degree august day in 2018. My room was clean. The bed & pillows were fine. I stayed on the 3rd floor and worried about AC but found the unit in the room was efficient, kept things comfortably chilly, and actually thought the unit was pretty quiet. I was also nervous about the supplied ear plugs but although I heard some comings/goings of my neighbors the hotel was quiet enough for me, and I am a light sleeper. It's funny-- when I checked, in I joked to my husband that my hotel was haunted. That was before I read all the reviews here. I don't think it's really haunted but there is something about the decor, etc, that makes the place have that haunted feel. No paranormal activity noted during my stay, though I am not particularly a believer in such things. read more

We hosted our wedding and stayed two nights at the Hotel Havana Tressa coordinated our ceremony and reception the space is effortlessly beautiful and accommodating ! We love her ! The Food and Drinks from Ocho are to die for! Joey is the GM and his Venue/Hotel/Restaurant is 5 star! everything was clean and welcoming the space is so unique and incredibly cared for the staff is dedicated and extremely warm and welcoming! Great Value for money ! We slept so comfortably! Hotel Havana (and San Antonio) was the destination for my first year anniversary with my husband, and it could not have been more perfect. The staff was awesome - personable, down to earth, and very helpful. The hotel was absolutely breath taking - a completely restored 1920's-1930's Spanish mansion decorated beautifully and simply. Refused to honor booking My wife and I booked the penthouse at Havana Hotel (using the Hotel Tonight app) and got a call the next day saying the room wasn't available. I should mention a lot of this back-and-forth happened through the in-app concierge, but through the half dozen calls I had to take it was very clear he was talking with the Havana Hotel front desk (he told me the name of the person he was speaking with each time). First, they offered to swap it for the grand suite, calling it an upgrade. The grand suite is on the ground level, isn't two story, has a much lower rate, etc. I asked if we could simply reschedule for another time, as we'd really love the penthouse. We checked the Havana Hotel website and found a date that showed the exact room available. We were told the room wasn't available on that night. I asked for any night in mid-to-late April, even weeknights. The Hotel Havana website showed many availabilities for the exact room in that date range. I was told the room had no availability in all of April. I have a feeling they simply don't want to honor the price they listed the room for. On top of that, they are either lying about room availability or their own official website is listing room that's aren't available. If you book here, either through a travel app or their own website, expect a call saying they can't honor the reservation. read more

Never stayed here but thought about it many times. I visited their website shop to get few things bc it looked cool. I ordered a shirt and coffee cup and saucer. Order took several weeks and when I emailed for any status report, none was returned. Leslie who I emailed never bothered to email. I emailed several times Order finally arrived and missing the saucer. So I emailed Leslie and no response. What a service! HOTEL 4/4.5 Stars STAFF 5 Stars So here it goes......husbby is working out in West Tx, we live in Houston, this was a mini-vacay in the midpoint, much needed time together, paid for early checkin and late checkout which staff was VERY accommodating. We normally stay at chain hotels and knew a boutique hotel would go really great or not at all but we were looking forward to a new experience. Overall check in was great, parking needs to be explained a little more either on website during check out or when sending reservation email, oversized trucks may find it hard to park. Lot is secure and we were lucky enough to get great spots. Wake-up call on Saturday, no bueno since we didn't ask for one, was water pouring down from the ceiling at 6:20am, this was a romantic getaway for us so a "cold shower" was not welcomed, LOL. Called front desk to inform them and sounded like young man has probably never experienced this before so was a tad discombobulated by the whole event. Waited about 10 mins after initial call, took a few pics and video and called back. "yes, we have notified maintenance" ....um, okay but H2O is not only on the floor but now on the bed...."oh, let me come check it out"...he checks and has notified us that an email has been sent to manage. In the meantime we are left with no idea on what is going to happen, what is the plan???? Called front desk back, to ask if we could at least get more towels since we had to use all of ours to mop up the floor......"oh yes, so sorry, I should have done that, so sorry, we also would like to give you a voucher for bfast" Um, our plan was to sleep late and eat later no thank you just please let us know the plan...nothing....crickets. Now, the normal me would be downstairs by now, no bra and morning breath but the husband and I agree to just get ready go eat and start our day of a few hours earlier than expected. As we are heading to bfast the new front desk person tells us that they are coming to change out our bed and freshen up room at 10, the leak was from the room upstairs and an overflowing tub??? What can one do at this point but enjoy your day. Bfast ended up being covered, a few drinks and dessert at dinner and one fee as far as late check out for sunday.......still no call from manager. Hotel booked so new room not an option. If it were not for the the staff and great food this would be an entirely different post, they all were apologetic for the event which was out of their control, HR picked some great folks. Overall the facility is unique and fun and we will be back as well as plan to visit some of the other Bunkhouse facilities. It is a great location, off the crowded path...STAFF makes this home, FOOD makes this a must and the drinks are cold and tasty. We did choose the glass half full approach and did not let the event ruin our day together but I hope they use this as a training tool, I do think there were things that could have been handled differently . read more

I'm trying to give some careful thought to this review as the Hotel Havana was a good stay. (If I could, I would give it 3.5 stars.) If you like retro hotels, you'll love this one. My family and I made the trip to HH from Oklahoma over a recent long weekend and stayed for four nights. Arriving in the evening -- thanks to needing a tire change -- we easily found the destination. The overall look of the hotel is reminiscent of the Old Havana we see in photos. It has a bit of vintage charm with a few modern touches. Some concerns arose when I asked about the parking (I chose the prepay option when booking), as I was told there were only a few spots open so we would have to check. While there is a restaurant and likely special events at Hotel Havana, at the very least, they might want to put a cone on the parking spaces prepaid by guests. (Thankfully there were one or two available spots.) It's definitely worth a note to say the parking lot is .... petite. I have a crossover and found myself praying not to hit the car in front of me as I backed into a spot. Parking is pretty simple during the day, but if you're coming in the early or late evening, it will get tight ... assuming you can find a spot. The highlight for me during this stay was the room -- and the amazing decor. While small, the four poster bed, little writing desk, vintage drawers and Smeg refrigerator were a cute touch. I also loved having a brick wall that added to the ambiance. The bathroom was a bathroom; nothing fancy or really noteworthy. We decided to order room service for breakfast the next morning that was extremely tasty and on time. All of our meals were warm and fresh. The only issue we had is that I ordered one mimosa and three came. (The lady working at the front desk said she would take them off our bill.) Ordering dinner that evening, however, was a different story. Not only did the food take super long, but it was close to cold. Have you ever eaten a sandwich that was supposed to have warm cheese, but was a hard glob? Yup, that's what happened. We would've returned it, but with two hungry tots -- who were already at their wit's end -- we worked with what we had. (Judging by the food, someone probably made it on time and it just sat.) Definitely not worth the 20-22 percent service charge. Another not so stellar part about staying at HH was the "gym access" they have. Yes, you can get a pass to a nearby Gold's Gym (assuming the hotel even has enough for the day), but you're going to have to walk about 7-10 mins to get there. While I don't mind the extra FitBit steps, it is a bit of an inconvenience walking to and from, versus having a facility that's closer or in the building. Speaking of location, I will say that Hotel Havana is a bit of walks away from the bulk of hotels in downtown San Antonio, which can be good. This was my first time visiting the city, and I had no idea how many vagrants are here in the open. (I also saw two people exchanging drugs on the way back to the hotel.) Because we didn't want to deal with the parking lot, we decided to bear the humidity and sun to see attractions. The Alamo is about a 15-20 minute walk, and the Mexican market is an additional 15 from there. Checkout was interesting as I saw repeat charges for room service, even though we only paid for two meals. (The totals for our meals included the service charge, so I was confused to see extra charges.) As it turns out, the $16 worth of mimosas we didn't order (two extra drinks) were still on the bill, but thankfully were removed when I got the final email at home. I saw two other small room service charges that I emailed about and have yet to get a response. All in all, Hotel Havana is an experience. If you love good decor, don't mind dealing with a squished parking lot, and don't need to go to the gym multiple times a week, you would likely love it here. Because of proximity and other amenities -- like a pool and such -- I would likely stay elsewhere if I ever went back to SA (#familylife). It wasn't bad though. I'm a sucker for a specific aesthetic (well, several specific aesthetics) and wouldn't ya know it, Hotel Havana fits right within my portfolio. Or, my Pinterest board, mayhap (search me! I'm JoiDarling). Walk into the Hotel Havana and the delicious smell of incense immediately hits you (and at other times of the day, Murphy's Oil Soap keeping those floors all squeaky). Next, you'll take in the gorgeous atmosphere, the dark woods, the Dia de los Muertos skulls, lanterns, velvet couches and dark red, red, red everywhere. It's as if Morticia and Gomez Addams got better taste and then decided to take over a hacienda (no worries, the concierge is not Lurch-like). In the evenings, they light red candles throughout the lobby and hallway. Seriously, could the atmosphere be more perfect?! I mean, you even get an actual *key* to your room!! And the room itself is more of the same. Thoroughly modern comforts (cushy bed, crisp robe, posh linens and fluffy towels, bath products that smell like gumdrops) with a vintagey touch here and there, the adorable 50s fridge (their nod to the car scene in Cuba, perhaps?), iron head board, various furnishings... Because I booked the room a month ahead and because it's summer, they were running a sick room rate that I won't even reveal here because I'm sure it has changed by now, but do try and book ahead! My room was a king suite, I believe, so it had an extra small room with a desk, making it great for getting work done. If I had known, I would have asked for a Riverwalk view, but I'm not complaining. The parking lot was just fine. Well, sort of. Other things: friendliest desk staff ever, prompt room service (the espresso is divine!) and I won't even get into how I wanted to move into their bar/restaurant, Ocho. That's to be saved for a separate review. I liked being at this more quiet end of the Riverwalk, away from the hustle and bustle of the restaurants, bars and shops (that's just a quick walk away, though!) Make sure you check the dresser in the room for the hairdryer. It's not in the bathroom, so I thought the room didn't come equipped with one. My only issue with this property is the lack of gym. This probably doesn't matter to some people, but it's extremely important to me. I need to get a workout in whether traveling for business or pleasure. Also, be sure and check your hotel bill for accidental charges (and if they say they will email your bill, make sure you receive it! We had to follow up with a call a week later). I found a charge for 17 bucks. I believe it was a leftover charge from minibar items the previous guests had used and because these items were not replenished, it was tagged onto my bill. No worries, though. They quickly removed it. Other than this, I really enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Havana. Even if I don't stay here next time I'm in time, I will return just to visit that stately lobby (and of course, Ocho). read more

Hotel Havana, you sexy bitch. You teased me the other night. Your dark lounge illuminating with fiery reds seduced me over for a drink, yet I was never proposed to stay the night. Talk about heartbreak. ...But the time will come when we're both ready. The only way this place could be any cuter is if they gave you free puppies with your room. I'm actually at a loss for words. There's no way I can do this spot justice. Completely frazzled from organizing a 1200 person party the night before, I called Hotel Havana to make a reservation. In contrast to my experience with the automaton at the Sheraton yesterday, the friendly gentleman on the other end of the line took my name and told me to drive safely. That's it. "What is this magical place of old world hospitality", I mused. And quite rightly, as it turned out. Walking into Hotel Havana is like stepping from the streets of San Antonio into a teleporter straight to Cuba. The attention to every little detail is absolutely stunning. So I can cut to the chase of this experience, here's a list of everything that is amazing about this place: (deeeeeeep breath) Gorgeous dark wood, real keys to the rooms, unique antique and handpicked furniture, wrought iron bed frames with amazingly comfortable beds, full sized 50s-style refrigerator in every room that has sodas and huge waters and 24 oz tecates and imperials and champagne, worn beautiful rugs, the home made havana monkey, a basket of snacks and treats in room that reflect local flavor, the fidel/che/cuban prints scattered about, the decadent soaps, the rough hewn shower curtain, the gleaming silver and white sink knobs, the exposed brick and whitewash walls, the fresh red carnations in funky heavy opaque glass vessels, the third floor balcony, the two story penthouse, the sexy red lights, the incredible bar with its velvet furniture, melt your face off mojitos, spicy micheladas, impeccable service and the most valuable asset, the accommodating and genuine staff. Havana is a must see, must drink, must stay spot. This is like no place I've ever been before. San Antonio, you lucky damn devils. read more
