From the start, we were brought someone else's drinks. Our appetizer (jamón ibérico) was as tough as shoe leather. The salad was comprised of old, wilted greens, and the avocado in it was mashed rather than sliced. Was charged for 3 large beers when all we had were 1 large and 2 small. The beef entree was also super tough. Bill total: almost $100. I'll never go there again.

It's a charming little hotel, with a gorgeous patio, a library, nice rooms, and great views. When we arrived, unfortunately, my traveling companion and I were given a bedroom with a single bed. The staff were most accommodating, and on short order were able to provide us with a room with two beds, even though they did so with some difficulty on their part. It was greatly appreciated. The room was nicely decorated and updated. Old, and yet, new. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious and served in a quaint little dining room, reminiscent of so many older European hotels, on the main floor. This hotel is near everything you could want. There's a great restaurant just across the street. There are shops, bars, the Cathedral and Episcopal Palace and museums just a few blocks (3 minute walk) away. If you're on the Camino and need a luxurious resting place for a night, this would be one well worth considering.

We had the misfortune of getting the twin room closest to the bathroom and it has been a nightmare of people talking and clanging doors. I tried to change rooms, and the owner said there were no rooms available. I am a light sleeper, so I sleep with earplugs, and I still heard a man telling someone, he was an hija de puta madre. It looks like something out of a horror movie!

It is 2 blocks from the Castle and main church. The hotel doesn't have much street presence, you have to look hard for the sign. They buzz you into the foyer. The front desk people didn't speak any English when we were there. Our room was clean and modern. It was a corner unit so it had 2 windows. The bathroom door was glass and slid on rollers. So although you had visual privacy, there was none for sound. We couldn't get the heater in the bathroom to work but not sure if it's a seasonal thing ie they only turn on in the winter. It was the kind where hot water runs through pipes. There was a restaurant attached but it looked deserted at night and not open for dawn patrol. There was really nothing musical about the hotel. I guess it was a print shop before for sheet music.

The hotel's history is long and complex, spanning about nine hundred years, with highlights including a stint as the Royal Cemetery and a concentration camp during the Spanish Civil War. There are plaques throughout the hotel, as is appropriate for a major historical landmark. My room was large, well-appointed, came with chocolate and looked out over a beautiful garden maze. The restaurant is highly regarded and looks like something out of Beauty and the Beast, although I found the food somewhat oversalted. Breakfast is appropriately high quality and offers a huge range of options. Including kiwi juice. I've never been offered kiwi juice before. The bar is located in a spacious room with massively high barrel-vaulted ceilings, and after a drink or two you can go across the hall and sit in almost perfect isolation in the former cloiser refectory under a truly stunning 16th century carved ceiling. There was a wedding going on while I was there. It is a dream location for such an event and the wedding party seemed to be having a fantastic time. Returning for more than a one-night stay will be a goal of mine!
