If you love mid-century Danish Modern design, Hotel Alexandra will be just right for you. The small lobby is truly a celebration of that, its seating areas a medley of iconic chairs and tables, framed pictures showing more, and bookshelves filled with design books.
Each room in this stylish boutique hotel is unique, sporting a minimalist aesthetic with whimsical touches, furnished with actual pieces from the mid-1900s. The finest are deluxe rooms showcasing works by specific designers, including the storied likes of Hans J. Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Vernor Panton, Jens Risom, Kaare Klint, and Finn Juhl. My room featured works by Nanna Ditzel: two adorable purple "Pot" lounge chairs and a circular coffee table with inlaid tray.
Specific pieces notwithstanding, the Ditzel room was spacious and pristine, with great natural lighting from two large windows. The bed was marvelously comfortable, fluffy sheets and pillows on a soft and supportive mattress. The bathroom was also roomy, although inexplicably lacking in hooks/shelves for personal belongings. The shower stall is small, and easier to shower without the curtain closed; the Grohe shower fixture is nice although water pressure is weak.
Amenities include wifi, flat-screen tv, room safe, and a mobile app that's surprisingly well-designed to provide information about visiting Copenhagen. Drawbacks include no air conditioning (not an issue in May) nor refrigerator. If room cleaning is skipped, the hotel offers a voucher for a complimentary drink in the lobby or discount at the hotel restaurant. The adjoining restaurant is mediocre and not recommended, but the breakfast buffet is fine, with a good selection of eggs, charcuterie, sausage, cheeses, freshly baked breads, yogurt and toppings, fresh fruit, and pastries.
Hotel Alexandra is a lovely, retro-style hotel, especially worth staying for those interested in Danish mid-century design, but also for anyone who wants an experience specific to Denmark. Very centrally located, within 10 minutes walk of Copenhagen Station, Tivoli Gardens, City Hall, Town Square, and one end of Strøget, an extensive shopping street, even walkable to Nyhavn if feeling ambitious. read more
