Inside a Cash Saver isn't really where you would normally think to find flavorful restaurant quality items. Another no frills location that is serving up some pretty good food! Be careful if you Google Hot Tamale Catering. The previous location on SE 14th shows up in Google as Permanently Closed. The current location on Fleur is very much open. Open 800 AM - 800 PM Tuesday through Saturday. Closed on Sundays and Mondays. When you pull in to Cash Saver it kind of looks like Hot Tamale Catering has it's own entrance on the North end. It doesn't. Make sure you enter through Cash Saver's main entrance and then head to your Left. The ordering process is similar to most ready to serve counters. You can either call your order in or place it there. Payment is done at the register to your Left. Seat yourself and they bring the food out to you. Seating is low top table and chairs and booths. Fountain drinks are self serve Coke products. I've known Angie Ramos by reputation for years, but this is my first time meeting her face to face. I'm not sure why. I screw up a lot. Ask my exes and current gf... A killer smile and a Texas accent that can't be hidden.... She was working the counter when I walked up. I ordered the double smashburger style cheeseburger with potato salad (I'm fried out) and a soda for there. And an order of 10 fried chicken legs to go. Angie didn't want to give me the legs in the case and offered to fry a batch up fresh since I was going to be there eating a meal anyway. You got to love it when an owner recognizes that unprompted! The wait for the burger was short. A few minutes and it came out hot and fresh. The accompanying tomatoes, lettuce, and pickles were bright and colorful. The potato salad was how I like it. Not fancy. Potatoes, onion, a little egg, mayo, and mustard. Not bougie thank God. I hate when something so basic gets overcomplicated. Don't do too much. Just keep it simple. Lol The burger was excellent! I'd put it up against Lachele's as far as quality. The meat has obviously never been frozen. We live in Iowa so I know you know what I'm saying. There is a distinct difference in flavor when meat is fresh. Now...you don't get all the options and available combinations Lachele's offers so don't get it twisted. I'm just saying if you want just a basic cheeseburger it's a REALLY good burger. I got the chicken legs to go, but I had to sneak one fresh out in the car. Think KFC original recipe and it's close. Way less trouble than grabbing a family pack from Wally World and then going through the hassle of breading and frying them... And have you priced vegetable oil lately...? Sheesh... This won't be the last time I run to Fleur for fried chicken. Air frying at home is great, but sometimes you need that breading. And I'm fine with all legs. That's a better deal that KFC's dark meat 8pc special on Tuesdays... And I'll also tell you the legs from HTC are a lot bigger than KFC's... So how do I go to a place named Hot Tamale Catering and walk out with only American comfort food? I'm kind of scratching my head a little and asking myself that too. But everything I got was cooked perfect... So the bottom line is... I don't care! Lol Though her tamales and enchiladas are what she built her name on so I'd encourage you to support her and try those too. You can buy them bulk and by the dozen. And an all day breakfast... I don't see how you can go wrong with that either! Good food, good service, and a great conversation with an engaged owner. This food truck came to our town and we were excited to have them. Unfortunately for them they had a few hiccups and a rough statt. They were late. They had issues with the generator and clearly didn't know how to operate it as they were trying to add gas while it was running?! They took pre orders, which was great, but they were highly unorganized and everything felt frantic. No one was communicating with the customers. Meanwhile, we were getting restless. Someone from the line went over and helped them get their generator started, meanwhile, it would have been nice if one of them started handing out pre orders. I didn't preorder. I had planned on getting a plate as advertised on the Facebook event post. When it was my turn, I started to place my order which included tamales plate and they were out? Uhhhh, I was the 1st person to order anything as the others ahead of me were all pre orders. The only menu items posted online were tamales and enchiladas. Their name has tamales in it, how can you not have any? I was dumbfounded and disappointed. So, I got my enchiladas to go. The food wasn't bad, the enchiladas were dry, not saucy at all. I only have experience with enchiladas being saucy. Maybe this is authentic to not have sauce? I don't know if they are new to this and just have kinks to work out? The low score is for the poor planning and communication as well as poor customer service. I placed an order ahead of time (days ahead) as she requested so she had time to prepare what I had ordered. I received a confirmation that everything would be ready. I tried to follow up with her a couple days ahead of time to find out how much the order would be and confirm. All seemed good, she'd let me know costs the next day. I never heard back from her until 9:30 AM the day that I was supposed to pick up food for a holiday party. I ended up winning a dozen tamales from a Christmas giveaway and they were some of the best I have ever had!!! She gives you so many options- chicken, beef, pork , with options to smoke the meat then you get to pick red or green sauce. We chose the smoked pork with red sauce, wow! AMAZING flavor and you can tell that they are made with lots of love! They are super filling and stuffed to the brim of the husks! The pork had a nice slight kick to it but you could still taste the pork and seasonings without having your mouth feel like it was on fire! Her motto of masa matters rings so true!! Excuse my terrible plating in the photo; I couldn't wait to tear into these tamales from Hot Tamale Catering. Not only are they huge, they are amazingly delicious Seriously, they are a culinary orgasm. The top one is chicken in salsa verde, the other one is pork in salsa roja. The meat in both was super flavorful and the masa is soft and also delicious on its own. The rice and salsa are bursting with flavor, too. Learned about this place on Facebook and ordered straight from there. Payment through Venmo made it super easy and the most difficult part was that I picked them up when it was dark out and I couldn't see the address on the house. But, I messaged her and she came right out. I love to eat and I can easily put down 2 tamales and some rice but these were too big and I couldn't eat 2 but that's Ok - more for later. Great food and service! The food was hot and ready and we were even a couple minutes early! The portion sizes are HUGE. I'm usually a pig (and also had eaten 0 food during the day) but I could only eat 2 enchiladas with my rice and chips/salsa. Let me tell you about the salsa... I could drink the stuff. One of the best salsas I've ever had! Only thing was that it was a tad salty, but hey, I expect to be on sodium overload for this type of meal anyway. The beef, potato, and cheese enchiladas were good and authentic. Slightly heavy on the potatoes, but I'm the carb queen, so oh well! The rice exceeds restaurant rice with flavor and for some reason the grains seemed bigger? Overall an excellent meal. And the price of all this food just can't be beat... I absolutely do NOT recommend this caterer. I went to a wedding where Angie catered and the food was absolutely awful (of the food she did bring). It looked and tasted like straight slop. She even seemed to show up late AND forgot the main entrees (tamales and enchiladas even though tamale catering is literally her restaurants name). There was also supposed to be a variety of entrees (beef, chicken, and pork) yet there was only beef of whatever the slop she brought was. Angie claims the bride didn't want them but there was literally a sign at the wedding of the menu and it had everything on it she forgot. The bride absolutely had a panic attack because of it and now this restaurant won't refund the money of what food they didn't show up with. Absolutely no way to do business, Im certain the BBB will be in touch love. Also, the fact you're trying to get these reviews taken down when you did something fraud is no way to run a business. Wish you luck Angie, my dad and I also supported your business but no longer after what you've done to my friend on her special day. P.S. I was in no way asked to write this review. We ordered $180 worth of food for the Super Bowl with the expectation to pick up food at 11am the day of our event. After driving out to their brick and mortar location, we were told that the food we ordered had yet to be completed and to make up for the inconvenience that they would drop off food to our party. By the time the game/party started (5:40pm) and after multiple attempts to reach out to the owner of hot tamales, we Were left with no notification or answers that they would not be delivering or even making our order. We ended up needing to order pizza, not hearing from them for the entire night. We hope to get our money back along with some sort of apology, as it is quite embarrassing to invite so many people over with promise of food and being unable to provide. read more
