Not sure what the big deal is. The flavors are good but barely any chicken or meat in the curry dishes yet a ton of rice.

I underestimated the small town vibe, as this is the sort of place where the owners do everything and I had a meal freshly cooked for me in an open kitchen. It's part of the historic area of Lynchburg and has a nice brick line space that has been amply decorated. They offer a large vegetarian and vegan selection of both Indian and more Middle Eastern cuisine and because of the nature of the place, you can have a conversation about exactly what you want. I insisted that I wanted something spicy and managed to talk them into it. I got some okra that did have a significant kick to it and was otherwise fresh and aromatic. I also added a large chai which was sweetened to taste. I did not have room to really indulge on dessert, but nonetheless decided to take one small baklava to go. It was quite wondrous in texture and the flavor explodes out of it. The reason I had not been in before is that their hours are rather limited, but for anyone looking for vegan/vegetarian food in this part of the state, this place stands out. read more

My daughter was in town recently, so of course we had to have lunch at Hot and Cold Cafe where she thinks they have the best of one of her favorite dishes! Uday was limping around, preparing his wonderful food with the serving done by his wife. I learned that he is going in to the hospital in a couple of months for knee surgery to get himself back to 100% functional. I stopped by today for some iced tea and a little baklava to go. Uday takes southern sweet tea to a whole different level! I met one of his other regular customers who told me he comes up by for a carry out, maybe three times a week, and has never gotten anything there that was not wonderful. It took over an 1 hour and 20 minutes for me to get my food. The service is terrible. The lady who was taking orders was so extra. They would not stop talking, it's like a nervous tick. The food was good however, the portion sizes are rather small I spent $18 and left that place hungry. It's also interesting that they use a microwave to heat up almost all food. I was also concerned about the general quality of the food. The entire kitchen doesn't seem properly ventilated everything about it seems a little bit suspicious. This restaurant is run by the owners, Uday and his wife. He makes EVERYTHING from scratch. It's a small place and operated by just the two of them, so they sometimes run out of things. But that's because it's so good! When we came here for the first time with our 14 month old granddaughter, Uday made up a mango puree for her and brought it out. When my daughter comes home from college on breaks, she always wants to eat at least once at Hot and Cold Cafe. I still miss their buffet, which went away during Covid and I guess buffets are pretty much gone for good now. But I am now discovering their menu, which has quite a few good choices With meat and no meat. My daughter always gets the butter chicken and says that it is the best of any place she has ever been to. Came here on a weekday lunch! The place was busy. The owners, Uday and his wife Timby are naturally very kind and hospitable people! Usually, Timby is the waitress but today Uday was cooking and waiting tables at the same time. With all that he had going on, he was efficient in taking orders, serving, and cooking all at the same time! Since Uday was scurrying around, we quietly just found our own tables. Within a few minutes, Uday came to us and took our food orders, Lamb Biryani and Dal Makhani with Basmati rice on the side. The Lamb was specially imported from New Zealand. Uday mentioned to me that refused to buy low-quality Lamb sheep meat sold at Big Box stores. He took great pride in quality food. We could tell he was balancing several responsibilities all at the same time. Within a few minutes, Timby arrived taking on the waitressing, which gave Uday a few minutes to breathe. We were surprised that as busy he was he took the time to come over and even sat at our table for a few minutes to speak to us. Customer service extraordinaire! The food arrived warm and fresh! It was absolutely delicious and spicy. He even gave some of his special pickles and relishes that is only made fresh at this restaurant. This may want to tweak a little bit here and there but I highly recommend this place and wish them success! read more

This establishment was tasty but seemed to confuse me. Everything here seems to have some measure of vinegar that I wasn't used to. Even the butter chicken that normally is a silky, tomato based, creamy curry had some measure of vinegar. Despite that this place is not bad! The food came out in a reasonable timeframe and the hummus tasted fresh! I wished the pita was a bit hotter, it came out ice cold but it served as an adequate vehicle for the hummus. The food was, smaller then I expected for the price. The gyro I ate was pretty good despite this fact but it felt... skinny? for a gyro? Not an adjective I thought I would ever have to use for a gyro but here we are. Every curry ordered by my friends was at an adequate spice level but seemed a bit small for the price paid and everything had vinegar in it. It might just be the type of cuisine sold here. Honestly the best thing was the baklava. It's been a long time since I've had baklava this good and even for the asking price of $2 for a sliver, I would pay it. It's that good. This great little cafe used to be near monument Terrance, but they were forced to find a new location. They found a great spot right across the street from the community market. The decor inside was great with an exposed brick wall with real hardwood floors. This location was a great upgrade for this place. The other good news is the food is just as amazing as it was in its old location. The buffet was well stocked and everything was fresh. The owner cane around to ensure you were satisfied with the food offers and offered to bring us some bread. All the food tasted great and was hot and fresh. I highly recommend this cafe for some amazing Lebanese and Indian food. We went for the lunch buffet and they even have some amazing Baklava for dessert on the buffet. read more

I haven't tried the Mediterranean part of the menu, but the Indian is very good. They have the base food and can spice to your desired level of heat. My wife, 8 month old, and I stopped by after the farmers market to give this place a try. The owner was the only person working but was very friendly, especially to our baby, and did everything he could to give us a great experience. The food was excellent and unlike any Indian food I've had elsewhere. I am used to butter chicken being buttery, creamy, and tomatoey, but this was more savory which was unusual but still good. Decent little Indian Mediterranean infusion in Lynchburg downtown. Quaint setting that is very warm and friendly. Everyone is a friend as soon as they walk through the door. I had the yellow curry medium, which was fairly spicy. The mango lassy was delicious and seemed to be blended with the ice a little, which was very refreshing on a 95 degree afternoon. The server was very talkative, fun and friendly, as was the owner. The buffet is closed presently due to the pandemic. The proprietor is very involved with his guests and aims to please. We had the hummus trio, baba ganoush and gyros. There were choices of mild to extra spices sauces. The desserts were authentic to the Indian cuisine. Rice pudding had a flowery flavor, the custard was light and delicious not too sweet, it was more Like a pudding. The best of all was the baklava! If you are within 50 miles of this place and crave fresh authentic Indian cuisine, you MUST visit here. The Greek/Lebanese/Mediterranean dishes are also fab. The lamb is tender and plentiful and can be spiced from mild to super hot (Indian hot!) The tabouli was amazing. Fresh ingredients danced in our mouth. You can taste the garlic, parsley and lemon juice. We finished with their signature mango ice cream. I don't have any words to tell you how awesome that was. Not sure I understand what the hype is all about here... I tried this place a few weeks back and was quite disappointed. Small portions, food that was heated up in a microwave (that is always a red flag to me), and overall just decent Indian food. I've had much better elsewhere! A friend and I went to visit for the first time after several recommendations. The owners are very sweet and personable. I got a lamb pita which was on the smaller side but tasty and reasonably priced. My friend got the chicken tikki masala and said it was very good. We both got mango juice and chocolate baklava which were delicious, and the owner kindly gave us some mango pudding to try and it may have been the best part. BLUF: Excellent service, excellent food I slipped into Hot and Cold Cafe on a chilly night to grab some dinner before heading to a concert downtown. The owner and his wife both greeted me cordially and told me to pick a seat. I initially intended just to order water, but the owner convinced me to give something else a try (he simply pointed out the special drinks on the menu to ensure I'd seen them before confirming my drink order; some people might find that a tad pushy, but I appreciated it). I ended up getting the Indian Chai. I was asked how sweet I wanted it, and I said I wanted just a tiny amount of sugar added. Now, anyone that knows me can tell you I get unusually picky about the amount of sugar in my hot tea (people tend to be surprised I can even taste the amount I put in, and laugh at the minuscule amount that I claim "ruins" my tea), but when my chai came out, it was just about perfectly sweetened. Also, I should note that before I even had a chance to try it, the owner instantly offered to take it back and fix it if it was too sweet or not sweet enough. For my main meal, I ordered goat sabji. Sadly, they were out of goat, so the owner recommended I try the similar lamb sabji. I went with his suggestion. He asked how hot I would like it, and I struggled to say I wanted it somewhat hot, but not Indian-hot (I think I just ended up asking for medium). Noting my hesitation, the owner tried to stay on the lighter end of medium, and brought my some additional sauce/spice mix to add to my food in case I didn't find it hot enough. I ended up not needing that at all, because the 'medium' was plenty hot (but still enjoyable to me, as someone who likes a little kick but doesn't go for super spicy items). For dessert, I ordered gulab jamun. It was interesting and pretty good, but due to the small amount (two bites for $4), I probably wouldn't order it again unless it was to get a friend to try it. Overall, the food was very good, and I felt the portions were about right for the price. The service was some of the friendliest I've received in Lynchburg, and that alone would be enough to see me come back with a friend. read more

I was recommended this place by a friend. Since parking is always intimidating on the downtown, I put it off for a while. The owner is why you should go. He is the sweet, happiest man I think I have ever met in my life. If you are having a bad day, try their spiced ice tea sweet. It was fantastic and as inviting as the owner. I ordered babaganoush and lamb shwarma because I have had it before and wanted to see how it compared. It was great. The babaganoush was warm and inviting like the tea and owner and the lamb shwarma wasn't like other gyros, overloaded with every ingredient as if to hide the lamb. It was smaller than the normal American meal, but it was balanced. The ratio of wrap to lamb and everything on it was great, and I asked for extra sauce on the side and that was incredible also.
