We ended up getting a few things to go instead of dining in as the smoke shop next door has copious amounts of smoke coming out of their exhaust going directly into his air intake outside. The shop next door should be ashamed and the landlord should do something about it. The hummus was phenomenal. I would have loved to see it served with homemade pita instead but it was delicious nonetheless. The Ma'amoul was great. Highly suggest getting food for pick up! read more

The food here was amazing. Very reasonable prices for the amount of food we got; we left full and pleased with everything we ate. You can tell everything here is made from scratch with high quality ingredients. Even the tomatoes were clearly sun-ripened. The hummus was especially exceptional because it was clearly homemade and was packed with flavor! The service was also pretty good; the owner himself served us and made small talk, helping us feel at home. My only complaint would be that he was a bit too willing to get into politics, which I would've preferred he left out of his talk. So far as ambience, the location is currently right next to a cigar shop, so unfortunately it smells like smoke when you enter, but that's not the owner's fault so we overlooked it and enjoyed the tasty meal. I would definitely come here again, especially once they change locations and move away from that nasty cigar shop. read more

Me and my bf were craving some really good baklava and a good coffee and we decided to give this place a try since I haven't had Turkish coffee before. We don't regret coming here and the owner himself even read my coffee grounds for me. I also got hungry and ordered the lamb kofta and Mashallah, that was satisfying although not a fan of lamb meat myself. Highly recommend this place and the place wreaks of smoke because of the smoke shop next door. I hope they will move elsewhere. Hadn't been here in a while but it was even better than I remembered. Absolutely the best baba ganoush, Turkish coffee and gyro. Being from NYC I had a lot of great Greek style food growing up and gyros are a favorite of mine but no place does it as great as Al Ryan. The owner is delightful, friendly and provides great service. It might look like a hole in the wall from the outside but it's a gem in Lynchburg for sure. read more

Tonight I am trying something new with lamb but of course Turkish coffee. I feel guilty for having abandoned downtown restaurants because of Covid but Al Ryan is so forgiving and good. Everything I ordered was authentic and amazing, especially the hummus. It's very difficult to find real Middle Eastern hummus, so I was very happy to find it here. In the most polite way, this place was very disappointing. Don't get me wrong the workers were very pleasant and nice but the food was not good. Me and my family ate a few bites but left most of it. Right off the bat the front of the store is dirty and has some strange liquid dripping down the window. It is right near a cigar shop and smells atrocious. The restaurant is run by one man and a child, and takes forever to arrive. The food is absolutely disgusting and is comparable to cafeteria food. When Aladdin stuck his head in a hole in the sand and discovered the Cave of Wonders, he must have felt the way I feel right now. On the outside, Al Ryan is an unassuming façade- sort of hole-in-the-wall. But the inside is filled with treasures! The drinks we got were chai and mint tea, both excellent. The lamb kebabs and kofti were delicious, and portions were generous. Dessert was homemade pistachio baklava; only my uncle's is better, but not by much. Lunch for the two of us was under $30. It was so good, I couldn't even finish writing this at the time- it's been a month, which is why this review is short on detail. Darn the bad luck, I'll just have to go back. Lynchburg is worth a visit just for the food, and Al Ryan is one of the better reasons to go! read more

What a great Mediterranean spot in downtown Lynchburg! I came here with 2 friends on a Thursday afternoon for lunch, and we were seated right away upstairs. I got the Sample Platter (hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, and falafel). However, our waiter informed me that they were out of tabbouleh, and that I would need to substitute something for the tabbouleh, so I ended up getting a double serving of baba ghanoush. Everything was really good, but I wish it had been served with soft pita bread instead of pita chips. I also had a Turkish Coffee with Cardamom and a piece of Pistachio Baklava, both of which were great. Service was a tad slow, as it looked like there was only one waiter covering both floors of the restaurant. However, toward the end of our meal, a person who seemed to be the manager/owner checked on us twice and was very funny and kind. read more

Grabbed carry out from Al Ryan on our way back to Smith Mountain Lake and thought it was pretty good. I ordered the veggie grape leaves platter and my significant other ordered the shawarma chicken platter. Both were served over rice and with some lettuce/salad and both had a mild to medium spice level. I'd recommend eating your carry out right away as we waited to get back to the lake and the lettuce started to wilt and there was a lot of condensation in the to go box. If you're ever in Lynchburg, you need to give this place a try. The owner and chef himself even came out and talked to me about the food. He prepared everything so nicely and fresh. I tried to come on a Monday night and they were close so I went to another place up the road and let me tell you, don't make the same mistake I did.
