A private room at Pilgrim House
    Kerry C.

It's entirely possible to stay in a clean, safe, friendly place in the heart of Memphis for $15 a night. That is, if you don't mind sharing and cleaning up after yourself. The place is Pilgrim House, Memphis' only hostel. The Pilgrim house is located inside First Congregational Church in Cooper Young. It's a little more cozy than the average hotel. When I stopped by, a college student was working in the library, the RAs were checking people in, and a man who had walked to Memphis from California was talking about his adventures with a small pack of Australians in the hostel's sunny kitchen. It's only $15 per person to stay in one of the shared dorms at the Pilgrim House. There are two single-sex dorms and one co-ed dorm, each with several sets of bunk beds. There are also a handful of private rooms, which are are $30 for one person (plus $15 for each additional person). There is a private bathroom, as well as dorm-style bathrooms. Guests are allowed to use the kitchen and the library, take whatever they want from the free food stash, and rent bicycles for the day through Revolutions Community Bike Shop (which is located in the same building). There's just one catch - because Pilgrim House is a hostel, they ask that everyone who stays there pitch in by doing a small chore. Most of the chores are things like unloading the dishwasher, taking the recycling out or sweeping the kitchen - they're light and take about five minutes.

Typical Chore at the Pilgrim House! Supplies right there, takes like 1 minute!

Let me start with this... this hotel isn't the worse place I've ever stayed, but a combo of…read moreexperiences made my stay awful. The outside was gorgeous, the lobby was clean... then it all went downhill from there. The hotel is dated and in desperate need of more staff. The WiFi only worked near the very front of the room, towards the hallway. The beds were uncomfortable. We could feel every single spring in the mattress. The sofa bed was even worse. There was absolutely no cushion left in that mattress. It should be replaced. The shower was clogged with something like dryer lint. After taking a shower, standing in our own dirty water, we called for help. We had to call the front desk 3 times on 2 separate days before someone came to unclog it. Which just so happened to be the front desk attendant himself, because he couldn't find his maintenance guy. One of the guest rooms were constantly smoking marijuana on our floor. We couldn't tell which room it was coming from, but it clouded the hallway and underneath our door and kept us up most of the night. The pool looked cloudy. The hot tub was fine though. I'll give that 2 thumbs up. The AC unit would stop working midway through the night. We all woke up sweaty. The housekeeping staff NEVER came by to clean our room, then got an attitude when I asked them to empty the trash! One housekeeper came into our room while we were out on the day before we left and sprinkled carpet freshener on the floor, brought new towels, but didn't take the old ones, then walked out. When I asked her to vacuum it up the powder, she got mad! We insisted she vacuum, because one of us has asthma. She finally did it, but made sure to roll her eyes while saying "is this good now?" We had breakfast on the last morning, but we were sitting there a little late. The staff started to clean up around us, which was okay, but they made sure to let us know they were visibly and audibly annoyed that we were still in there chatting and trying to finish up our meal. I asked for a late checkout, since my flight wasn't leaving until late and I had nowhere else to go. I requested 2pm, but was told 1pm as the best they could do. Which was fine. But at 1:05pm, the front desk attendant BANGED on the door! It sounded like he was trying to break it down!! I said through the door "who in the world is banging that hard?!" Well, instead of announcing himself, he just banged again harder!! When I opened the door, he said "you were supposed to be out of here at 1pm!!!" I looked behind me at the luggage we had packed up and I said "we're leaving now! why are you banging like that? you scared us!" He says " you scared me by being here! we need to clean this room!!!" And walked off. He could have just called or even knocked nicely. Trust me when I say this... we had ZERO plans to stay there any minute longer than we needed to! Being there for that many nights was long enough!! A whole 5 days and 4 nights and NO ONE came to clean our room once. Suddenly, there's a big hurry to get in there and kick us out to finally do your job?? I think not. WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING. Ever.

My family and I have stayed at this hotel for several years, and we've always looked forward to…read morereturning. This year, we even brought guests from our church because of the positive experiences we've had in the past. Unfortunately, this stay was extremely disappointing and did not reflect the level of service and quality we had come to expect. One of our biggest concerns was the breakfast service. Some of the kitchen staff were not welcoming. In particular, an older staff member was rude and snappy when we politely asked if the food trays could be refilled. Customer service should be friendly and respectful, especially toward guests who are simply asking for food that is supposed to be available during breakfast hours. We also experienced problems with housekeeping. My family consists of six people, so we needed additional towels and washcloths. We were instructed by the front desk to bring our used towels downstairs before receiving replacements. After doing exactly as we were asked, we were only given two towels and told we would have to wait until the next day for the rest. That was simply unacceptable for a family of our size. The condition and cleanliness of our room were also very disappointing. The comforters and pillowcases were stained, there were stains on the sofa, and we found hair in the bathtub upon arrival. The garbage disposal had a terrible odor, the shower head stopped working multiple times, and several sprinkler heads were broken. With temperatures around 100 degrees outside, the air conditioning struggled to work, making the room very uncomfortable. We also noticed tiles falling off the walls, and the elevator stopped working during our stay. These were not isolated issues--many of the guests who traveled with us experienced similar problems in their rooms as well. The outdoor amenities were just as disappointing. The pool was dirty, with cigarette butts and other debris floating in the water. The outdoor tables were not cleaned, trash was scattered around the area, and there were cups filled with cigarette ashes left sitting outside. There were also two outdoor grills available, but neither had propane. When we asked about it, we were told that propane was not included, which was frustrating since the grills were presented as an available amenity. After being loyal guests for multiple years and recommending this hotel to friends, family, and members of our church, this experience was especially disappointing. We expected much better based on our history with this property. Considering the amount of money we spent and the relationship we believed we had built over the years, it is unfortunate to say that we will not be returning next year. We hope management takes these concerns seriously and makes the necessary improvements in customer service, cleanliness, maintenance, and overall guest experience. We would have preferred to continue making this our annual hotel, but based on this year's stay, we can no longer recommend it. This version is firm, detailed, and focused on specific observations, which generally makes reviews more persuasive and useful to both management and future guests.

Some of the little cabins are original & some are new built to look like the original historic cabins. We LOVE the new built cabins that look Vintage. They are so adorable & so unique. It was definitely a labor of love that went into this place. It's just breathtakingly beautiful in the morning fog & the sunsets are legend from this place. The coolest thing here is the juke joint & blues bar that has live music. You can't even get a room here when the festival is going on. If you want to attend the festival you have to book a year in advance. Highest Recommendations.
