So my family and I have been eating our way through Italy for about 10 days. We stared in Rome then Florence and now Modena. It's a Sunday night, so almost everything is closed here. After doing some online research, we decided to come here. It might have been the BEST meal so far.
It's a few minute walk outside the central area of Modena. We had called for a reservation and were seated promptly outside as it was a beautiful evening. The surrounding area was quit and the restaurant was full of locals. Our waiter sensed we were Americans (despite my best efforts to speak Italian as my Grandparents are from Abruzzi), and brought menus in English. He was guarded at the beginning but as the night went on, he warmed to us and was actually quite charming by the end.
We started by ordering a bottle of local Vecchia Modena Premium Lambrusco and then a plate of Culatello with pieces of Parmigiana cheese and plate of mixed cured meats. The cool, light sparkling rose paired perfectly with all the cured meats, especially the Culatello, which was fantastic!
Now for dinner! My son ordered a pizza with Gorgonzola and Speck. Perfectly cooked with the mild Gorgonzola and the speck being an amazing combination. My wife had the traditional homemade tagliatelle with Bolognese sauce which was spectacular. I had a fillet of veal with an unctuous reduced balsamic vinegar sauce which was also an amazing combination. The winner and champion dish of the night was ordered by my daughter. She ordered the simple homemade tortellini with the cream parmigiana sauce. It was probably the best dish we ate the entire trip! Simple but perfect!! We all tried to eat some more but my daughter defended her plate with enthusiasm!
Honestly, best meal we had in Italy! read more
