The prices are somewhat steep but everything is top notch, always fresh and impeccably prepared. It may seem somewhat intimidating to try to figure out what everything is, but I have always found the staff to be extremely helpful in this regard. I love the sushi and rolls and sashimi, as well as the more seasonal items on the menu, like the razor clams with mushrooms and the tiny fried fish. This is, by far, my favorite Japanese restaurant.

But there must be some unspoken rule that the best sushi restaurants are transported from decades past. Once you taste the food it becomes clear why several customers are Japanese themselves: this is the real deal. The fish was superb, and the preparation straightforward and unpretentious - none of the fancy presentation of fashion-conscious places, just really good food. Two telltale choices: the octopus was very tender, an easy one to get wrong. And the tuna sashimi, so often victim to dry, opaque squidginess, was deep and vibrant in colour, retaining the moist bite of fresh fish. Added to the essentials when in town.

I was there last weekend have lunch (the coupon gives you the full/dinner menu) and I have mix feelings about coming back to it. On one hand, the sushi itself was good, as well as the seafood on the grill (shrimp mainly). They have a decent selection of basic sushi as well as some modern ones (first time I eat "meat sushi) which I enjoyed. Our waitress was super nice, attentive and always smiling, which is highly appreciated. On the other hand, the owner was not very welcoming, neither helpful. To order your food, they give you a tablet, that allows only to order ten items (consider that a specialty sushi is one piece per order and a regular roll is three pieces per order) every fifteen minutes. While some orders are quick, we had a couple that took 30+ minutes - restaurant was not even half full - and one order was served to another table. On top of that, some items in the menu (the noodles or the soup) were clearly microwaved because they were completely dried out. Once again, mix feelings about it. The ordering system is not useful at all, you spend more time waiting than eating but some of the sushi rolls were good.

I am on a business trip in Antwerp. I decided I was in the mood for sushi tonight for dinner. So I…read morestopped at Umi sushi in place an order of edamame, king, crab, roll, and starting with the miso soup. I also got a ginger beer to drink. It took about 10 to 15 minutes for the ginger beer to be brought to the table because obviously they did not have enough help. There was one guy who was the host and also serving the entire front patio area. There was a table of two ladies, who came in after me by about 10 mins who had placed the order before me. I realize that a guy was very busy, so I did not make a fuss about it. He took my order immediately after taking their order, even though they should've taken my order sooner. There was another guy working who was also serving tables but no one asked me anything. He prepped my table with the right utensils etc and walked away. To make a long story short, I never got anything that I ordered except for the ginger beer. I knew they were busy so I patiently waited... I was there for over an hour... then the guy comes out and tells me that he forgot to put in my order and then asked me what did I order again? As polite as I could be, and let him know that I was not going to order it and to just charge me for the drink and I will leave. He comped the ginger beer and was super apologetic for everything. Needless to say, I will never eat at Sumi sushi again. I always eat there when I come to Antwerp since it's across the street from my hotel. As a business, it was UNACCEPTABLE. The funny thing about it. All is the fact that they were not very busy, the inside was almost empty. Service sucks when you don't service.

But maybe that's because I was the only customer in the restaurant at 12:30 pm. Should have known that was a bad sign. I started with the miso soup which was on point. Generous portions of seaweed and soft tofu. Perfect flavor, as if they started with a homemade dashi and excellent miso paste. Everything else was not good. The mini lumpia - it was fried well, I'll give them that. The sauce was a little off, not the traditional sweet and sour sauce that accompanies lumpia. The filling was mostly soggy, over cooked cabbage. It tastes like there was also mashed potato inside the lumpia. Overall, this is not a good dish. The salad has avocado. Yum. But they dressed it with honey mustard! Where is the traditional yummy Japanese salad dressing? Even if they had subbed in thousand island, which I've seen before, that would have been better. But plain honey mustard? No thank you. I took two bites and left the rest. Onto the main event - unagi nigiri and a California crab roll. The unagi - I really couldn't figure out what was going on with it. I bit into it but couldn't chew through it. I spit it back out, and it looked like thick fatty skin, but skin should be edible. Puzzling. To be honest, I really don't know what I was eating. It was disgusting. The California crab roll lists its ingredients as crab, avocado, pickled cucumber, and tamago. Imagine my surprise when I got it and it was imitation crab, not real crab! How can you list the ingredients and name it in a way that's completely false advertising?! And the pickled piece was not cucumber at all: it was pickled daikon! The entire roll is a lie. This restaurant is located across form the famous cathedral. Maybe I got fooled into another tourist trap? In any case, the food was so terrible that I'm still hungry and will probably go to the McDonald's across the way. Sadness.

It feels like they want to give the impression of a hidden jewel, as you first have to find the restaurant to which you can only enter after having walked down the stairs that would lead you to an underground restaurant. Open the ancient doors and a different world opens to you. You can feel the excitement already, just by looking at the decor that hits you. It is really amazing and mesmerising. Those arched vaults giving you the impression that you're under some kind of secret monastery. The atmosphere is very intimate with dimmed lighting and candles everywhere. And then the fireplace that finds itself in the very cosy bar section contributes to this coziness as well. Even though the place seems to go for being a trendy and hip restaurant, it does not feel pretentious at all thanks to the interior decor. You can guess that I was very impressed. What else impressed me? The staff. Top notch, super professional and super friendly. It's been a long time that I haven't experienced this kind of service and it felt good. They were very attentive. My husband and I came here with our 2-year old baby daughter and even though it wouldn't look like a place where you'd bring a baby, they made sure that her experience would be great as well. They brought out some extra bowls and cutlery for her, so she could use her own. When they served us some appetizers on the house (some cucumber mixed with spicy sweet and sour sauce), they brought an extra portion for her with just cucumbers. I thought all that was very thoughtful when we didn't even ask for all of it. So I can come to the conclusion that this place is very kids-friendly in their attitude. And now the food. The food is exquisite. Fresh and original. A very good place to taste something different and experience a creative cuisine I'd say. The sushi itself is very fresh. They have a nice variety of fish and the makis they create are original, mixing different tastes, which makes it a total different experience of other more traditional Japanese (and that is what you have to keep in mind when you try out this restaurant). However, the only downside for me is that it is very expensive for what it is offering. And I'm not against a splurge once in a while. However, food-wise, for the same price or even a little cheaper, some other (traditional then) Japanese restaurants in Belgium offer better sushis/sashimis. But then of course, you'd go back to the more traditional food, whereas here, you'd go for some high quality fusion food. So, I personally believe if you want to discover a different culinary experience in an impressive atmosphere, Roji is the place to be: a fancy and trendy place to hang out, while having some delicious bites as long as you're willing to spend. It does impress and reminds me of some places in NYC. Therefore, I would not hesitate to come back whenever coming back to Antwerp.
