This is probably the most fun you will have in a store in Lansing, IA. My parents live just across the bridge on the WI side, so I get to go here pretty often. Lots of street parking available. Beware it is hilly and the curbs are really high. They also put lots of merchandise tables on the sidewalk in front of the store (weather permitting). The owner and his staff are really friendly and helpful. The aisles can get crowded and you can and will get stuck multiple times. This store is huge and packed to the hilt with almost anything you can think of. You can snag great deals on everything. I bought a bunch of hardcover journals, seventh generation soaps, toys, dishes and other random items, for less than $20. They carry close outs, overstocks and weird items. If you need something, you will find it here. They do have a second location just west of this location on the same block. Be sure to check out the second location too. If you are in the area, this is definitely a place to stop by and stock up on unique and useful items. read more

This place is a GEM!! I was visiting my friend in Decorah and we ended up exploring a couple small river towns as part of my complete Iowa/WI/MN tour. My friend insisted we stop in this store. The character in this place is UNBELIEVABLE. They've created a vibe that old time'y businesses spend a lifetime to achieve. You can smell the history in the walls and almost see how this place has evolved over time. They have EVERYTHING. Weaved kitchen rugs - check. Bakeware- check. Napkins, tools, office supples - check. Solar powered dancing Jesus - check. Like EVERYTHING. As another yelper mentioned - the owner knows where EVERYTHING is. It's truly amazing and honestly, I would continue to go back there just to quiz him and stand in awe of his memory. It's his livelihood and it's kinda weirdly inspiring to see the dedication to his business and all the items he has chosen to sell and pack into this place. Despite the crooks, crannies, and occasional dust bunnies, I wasn't grossed out by the old-ness that a place like this could easily present like. Most of the items make you smile or remind you of your childhood in some way. It's fascinating even if you don't plan to buy anything! This is a real down home Iowa Variety Store. They have everything in here that anyone could possibly want. I picked up a couple of Items for me that I have been looking for a long time. Also picked up some great Christmas ornaments that I have never seen here in Ca. The aisles are a little narrow but can be navigated. The prices in this store are totally unbelievable. I got 5 items for less than 20.00. The people working in the store were very friendly and helpful. read more

Bizarre small town variety store fun to explore This is the kind of non-corporate unplanogrammed store I like to peruse, because you never know what you're going to find. As their website states, "Stack 'em high whatch 'em buy (sic)" is the motto here. The small store is crammed with all kinds of merchandise from cookie cutters, furnace filters, spices, deer whistles, toys, coloring books, wrapping paper, wooden bird houses, crossword puzzle books, soap on a rope, canning jar rings, toilet seats, and greeting cards, and lots of hard to find items. The owner has said he has about 1 million items at any given time. They promote the business with a perpetual sidewalk sale in front of the store. Guess they've never heard of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) because there's no way a wheelchair could get through these crammed and cluttered isles. But the high curbs outside are probably the preventative to make sure that never happens anyway. The store's appearance from the curb makes you wonder if it's even a live and operating business, but it's been around since 1975 and has been featured in the Chicago Sun-Times, The Cedar Rapids Gazette, and the La Crosse Tribune. For the most part, I wasn't blown away by the prices, but it was fun to look around and each member of our party ended up buying some small items. read more

For what it is, this place is really a place to see. It is crowded, mostly cheap prices, outdated items, closeouts and God only knows what. It is so crowded with people and merchandise that I am truly surprised the floor doesn't collapse. I have been there about once per year over the past 10 years and always manage to spend about $5 or so on some gadget or item. I don't think this place could survive in a more modern and spacious facility. The conditions are part of the attraction. If you don't see what you want, don't be afraid to ask. Boss is friendly and somehow knows where most items are...which in itself is extremely amazing. read more
