$300 Well spent. It was Record Day and I had them on my list to visit for about a month. Im glad I didnt chicken out. Picked up so many records, I was left to decide which ones I had to put back. Still ended up with some gems but I forgot to get The Fonky Homosapiens, Janice Joplin and a few others. They have a decent selection from rock, pop, jazz, metal, r&b and rap. They even have a big selection of cd's. There is cafe right next door which is also accessible thru the "Wrecka Stow" Planning another visit soon. read more

We've visited this store multiple times and the customer service is consistently the same. No acknowledgement or greeting. On our most recent visit, We walked in and wasn't greeted at all, but a customer of a different race who was white entered right after us was immediately acknowledged. That difference in treatment was noticeable and unacceptable. We left without making a purchase. Don't spend your money where you're not valued. read more

Amazing selection of vinyl records. I did not really look as I was more interested in CD's. pricing for CD was reasonable for used but had a pretty good selection of $1 bargains. Had a small but good selection of metal CD's which is always nice! About a 10-15 min walk from downtown area if you need to get some sanity. read more

Popped in here when I was in town. I always try to support local record stores when I can. I was limited on time because my wife is not into the whole record store thing. So I had to browse quickly. I found a good number of records across genres: rock, punk, metal, etc. They were priced very fairly so I ended up with sizable stack that I had to lug back to my hotel. If I had an hour more to browse, I probably would have bought three times as much as I did. Store seemed well organized across all genres. Gentlemen behind the counter were friendly and even offered to take off the $10 promotion offer valid on a future visit on my total that day when I told them I was from out of town. I didn't take them up on it but I certainly appreciated the gesture. If I'm back in Greenville, I'll definitely stop in again. This is a PROPER record store. The store is exceptional. Vinyl is kept in proper alphabetical order. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about music, and clearly cares about music as well as their customers experience. There is a quiet room with jazz and classical which has peaceful classical music playing broken off inside the store. In the rock section special albums that have higher prices are handled labeled and graded with explanations as to their condition, meaning an employee has taken the time to really inspect the quality of the product. Employees are friendly and know the product and can quickly access information to order more obscure music artists and are willing to help you get what you need. This record store is well organized. We were literally kicked out of this place. I must admit we are elderly. My husband can't hear very well. When we came in he had his mask in hand but not on ....he was admonished rather rudely. But my husband wanted to talk to the manager so he asked this man if he was the manager and I think the guy thought we were giving him a hassle. My husband put on his mask immediately. And as we were looking, the records that we were interested in we're on a lower level and my husband said "can I have a chair"and the guy said I don't like your attitude you've had an attitude since you came in here." He kicked us out. We are both vaccinated we believe in masks we were not giving him any hassle. On top of that my husband had a stack of records he wanted to buy and they wouldn't let us buy them. Those are the ones that we were able to select before he had to get down to the ones on the floor. Amazing. read more

One of my favorite things to do in another town is hit up record shops, so when I found myself in Greenville this week, I decided to do some crate digging to see what I could find. In general, I was not disappointed. Horizon by far has the most comprehensive selection in the area. Having perused many stores and swaps in LA, San Francisco, Portland and Austin, I must say I was highly impressed. I'm always on the hunt for vintage vinyl gems (not new pressings), and Horizon had plenty. The Jazz selection was a true highlight, great punk selection, and a huge Rock catalog. There were so many gems, but some were already in my collection, and I was limited on suitcase space so I stuck to one. I have a theory about collecting records and there should be something serendipitous about buying one -- it either "grabs" you right away, or a song from it has been in your head. Mine was the latter (I had the riff of ZZ Top's "Ten Dollar Man" in mine all week), and sure enough a *very* clean copy of "Tejas" was right there in the new arrivals. Stoked! DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SOME QUALITY TIME TO SPEND DIGGING! I mean it. this place is BIG and has a ton of amazing records. So many different genres and bargin sections, and new arrivals and more. Good mix of both Used and Brand New... I was there a couple hours and barely scratched the surface. FRIENDLY Knowledgable staff and amazing records. What more could you want. Most of the prices were really fair to bargain. Truly one of the last of its kind. A classic record store. The employees are all knowledgeable and they have a lot of records that are important in our Appalachian music, as well as funk/soul/rock/jazz, and the only classical selection in town. I absolutely love this place. It brings back so many memories of spinning that 33 or 45 on the record player back when I was a teenager during the 70's and it was disco time. Now my son loves coming here and buying records. Well he calls them vinyl. I love that he can experience what I enjoyed in my youth. They have everything here. When my son comes up to visit from Savannah, this is the must go to priority place to go. Like myself he loves music and it is an essential part of our lives. Going here gives him the opportunity to experience how going to the record store was for me when I was a teenager back in the 80's. I always looked forward to Saturday's because my cousin who was older and had a car, would always take that trip to the record store. We would spend hours in there. So when he comes up I always let him pick oUt whatever he wAnts. Like me he has eclectic musical taste but that's ok. I'm just happy to share something that was an important part of my life. What a great funky old-school records store! We always like to visit when we're in town because they not only sell vinyl, DVDs and CDs, but they buy as well. Plus, it's easy to wander in from the attached restaurant (The Bohemian deserves its own review). The selection is small, but pretty varied and better organized than most old-school records stores. It's like they actually want you to find what you're looking for here! African rhythm, Happy Hardcore, good old Rock'n'Roll - they got it. They even have a 'classical' room with sound-proof windows so opera fans / brahms fans can have their own space to chill. Too bad most of the recordings in the classical room are older or more 'standard'. They really should think about beefing up that area with some new releases if they're going to devote a whole room to it. read more

Like the horrible and un-trendy vinyl listener that I am, I completely forgot about Record Store Day. Not only that, but I was away from my usual record stores that I've gone to the last few years on that day (Criminal Records and Wax 'N Fax in Atlanta). Well, since I was in the Greer area, I had to keep the tradition semi-alive, and I drove to Cabin Floor Records first. Afterwards, Horizon Records was also on my list to visit that day, and I'm glad I did. Horizon Records was only a short 1/5-ish mile drive away, but the experience was totally different than Cabin Floor. I think that's why it's so easy for two record stores to function so well, even though they're nearby: you've got to be different. I liked the comparison I used for Cabin Floor, so I'll use an abbreviated version of that here. In my experience, there are generally two types of record stores. There's the hip, modern, and trendy store that sells mostly new and a few old records. These stores are generally fairly expansive, with well-organized rows and proper labeling. The second kind involves mostly older and used records, within a store that is smaller and cramped, with owners who are chill and insanely knowledgeable about all kinds of music. These are the people who, once they know your taste, can accurately recommend you a band you've never heard of with relatively accuracy. Horizon Records is the first of those two. PROS: Awesome sale on Record Store Day. Well organized store, from genre, alphabet letter, and then even band. They offered some freebies if you purchased stuff on Record Store Day. I got a Tshirt and a few stickers. Pretty good pricing on used records. New pricing was what you'd expect. CONS: They didn't have a lot of older records offered. THE VERDICT: On Record Store Day, they were probably pretty wiped out since I came after 4pm. They had a really good sale, something like 10% off new and 20% off used records. The way they had their records labeled was very methodical and awesomely organized. Labels for genre, labels for letters in the alphabet, then labels for almost every band in that alphabet. You could tell at a glance if the artist you were looking for was there, and then with a simple flick of your wrist if the album was there. I mean seriously. It was a well-oiled machine, the likes of which I rarely ever see. There was still a pretty good selection of newer records when I went there, despite the (undoubtedly) rushed Record Store Day crowd. Also, there appears to be some sort of restaurant/bar (The Bohemian Restaurant?) that is connected by a door into both areas. I didn't have time to explore further, but I could only imagine how dangerous that would be for me. Five or six glasses of wine, then record shopping. My wallet would not thank me, but I'm sure my ears would. read more

I worked here when they first moved their location to Stone Ave. I was totally awkward, but felt like the coolest kid in high school with a job at "the record shop." It was here that I discovered musicians from Frank Zappa to Christian McBride and Yesterday's New Quintet. They also have great relations with artists coming through Greenville, so they have special events with musicians in-store. For me, it's the last stand of true record shops in Greenville. The staff are hand-picked for their vast knowledge of music. It's one of those things that is undervalued now with our kind of "grab and go" lifestyle when it comes to the arts. I feel, as well, that the experience here is a little bit less "music snob-ish" than that at Earshot. It's a cozy, friendly atmosphere - a true family business. It's not just a store - but more of an active outpost for the music community. Hint: troll around a bit for used CDs. Also, ask one of the people in-store about suggestions. Perfect for those who are trying to discover music that is new to them, or trying to find a unique gift for someone. read more

We were in town for the weekend, visiting from Asheville NC. The place is conveniently located close to downtown so we stopped in. The guy behind the counter was helpful and friendly. Not much selection in metal or punk, but they had a decent selection of modern rock, classic rock, jazz and blues. Layout was a little odd and they didn't have a "just in" crate, which would drive me crazy if I was a regular. That said, after some digging, I did find quite a few reasonably priced LPs... I love Horizon Records and the owner Gene is the man. In fact most all of the staff have been really cool in the time I've been going here. I think that is an important part of a fun record shop -- employees with different tastes but open minds and chilled out personalities. It's very clear that their selection was picked out with a lot of care. Horizon is easily as good as any of the shops in the nearer cultural hubs like Atlanta and Asheville. They are one of my favorite long-time Greenville institutions. They were around back when the West End was crack country and their little stretch of Stone Ave. shared with the Handlebar was G'ville's main place for music. read more

Whenever my travels take me through Greenville via I-85 from Atlanta, I always make time for Horizon Records. They have a coffee shop attached to the record store. Excellent inventory of Rock, Jazz and Classical in both Vinyl and CD. Really nice store environment. They do some in-store live performances too. Always find something when I visit. Only beef is that the guys that work there are not the friendliest. Music stores are like a community, an environment to talk with fellow music fans and collectors and the guys who run the store. That said, definitely worth a visit, you will not be disappointed. read more
