But once he started at the Phoenix School, things turned around. He came home after the first day and said, "It's like the teachers aren't even teachers--they're just people!" The caring relationship with his teachers, the community at the school, the way his teachers push him to do more than he thought he could and support him as he learns to push himself has been amazing. He loves school now and is thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. The way they integrate learning across all their activities is special. Students learn all the academic skills throughout all their activities, along with specialized practice in, say, math or writing, especially as they get older. They also use the community at large as their classroom with frequent out-of-the-classroom learning experiences that engage students far more than anything I've seen at any other school. Teachers support students as they produce high-quality work, with autonomy and ownership over their own learning. Teachers are among the most dedicated professional educators I've ever met. They work hard to create a community of students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members dedicated to the well-being and education of students as complete people. It's not possible for me to say enough good things about this school.

The Art Show was very exciting for our son, as he was able to show us all of his creations. It is a mixed age group, which creates a nice environment of learning and helping each other. The teachers are all very experienced and have a wonderful way with children. They are quick to identify and address any behavioral or interpersonal issues among the children and they are helpful with potty training, if your child is not trained before school starts. They have a significant focus on the arts - music, dance, painting, and crafts. The children all seem very happy and most mornings my son can't wait to go to school. We have all loved our time here.

Run-a-muck was highly recommended to us as the "best in Salem/Danvers", and was 1 of 2 preschools recommended by my PEDIATRICIANS office for my son. However, after contacting through their website, them via email, it was like pulling teeth to get any information. I still have no clue how much it would cost - and I asked about tuition 3 times! Finally, I requested that Valerie (the lady in Salem that was not giving me any information besides that they had a wait list, and only accept full days/weeks students) to give me the name, address, and phone number of someone in Danvers. I was given a name (Gretchen), and a phone number that was disconnected. She also stated that she forwarded my emails to her. When Gretchen emailed me, it was basically the same information - Please let me know what questions you have....yet nothing had been answered. In her defense, I didn't bother to respond. I'd already made up my mind, thanks to Valerie and her lack of information. Needles to say, this has left a very poor impression on me. I don't want to seems my child to a place that can't even figure out how to give information out to inquiring parents. If you are looking for someplace that refuses to answer questions, this is your place. I'd you want to know the ins and outs, and *gasp* talk to a real person...keep looking.

My son has been at Run A Muck since he was three (he is now five), and we have nothing but…read morewonderful things to say. He has never been bit, hit, pushed, shoved or hurt in any other way except for accidents on the play ground, such as a skinned knee. Even when this happened, the school called me right away to let me know and I was given an incident report when I picked him up. But kids will be kids, so I expect him to get hurt, I did when I was a kid! The staff are very attentive, friendly, helpful and great teachers. My son can now count to ten in three languages (four if you include English) and he tells us amazing facts that he learns at school. I highly recommend Run A Muck!

I went to Landmark half my middle school through high school. I was born with severe dyslexia. And…read moreI had great tutorial teachers that help, I believe that the one-to-one help me more with my dyslexia. The problem was I didn't do well in regular classes because they would be mixed with people with ADD and different levels of dyslexia. Yes the classrooms were small but with people with severe dyslexia it wasn't small enough. Most kids who get medicated for their ADD then can focus and read. That's not the same with me. The other problem was teachers. They would stay for a certain time. Get their certification in dyslexia and get room and board. They'd leave and get better money. The teachers were also in charge of the afterschool activities. Half of my years in middle school was At a different school And the science teacher there is so motivating, hands on and taught new ways to think about science. I thought I was going to be a scientist. Because of the change of the teachers at Landmark I had a horrible science teacher and just like that I was turned off science. They had people from all over the the world. so because of that they have room and board. I also think they take people who had a lot of money, And not always with a reading problem. When I went there they had kid who are princes from Eastern European, movie star children, and Family so rich that the kids could have their own mansion. That's why Most those buildings are named after their families. I would take a bus to school but I was felt like I was separated from the people who boarded. I could never do The afterschool activities because I had to catch the bus. I was left out. The teachers who would stay we're always good teachers but I left feeling like they should've done a little bit more. When I graduate from high school I wish they inform me how college would've been. How I could use certain techniques to use in college or in a job. I did graduate from college but I still can't read through full book without getting lost or feeling like I forgot what I read. Thank God for technology. I'm using the microphone on my phone to talk into it to type this and the speaker to read back to me so I can correct the words. With a group of my peers in middle school we started a movie called Enni's Gift talking about dyslexia.

My two kids entered GUS at grade 6 (the "upper school") from the homeschooling environment. They…read morewanted to be in a more traditional school setting, I wanted to ensure their learning environment retained the best parts of homeschooling: diverse, flexible, multi-layered (go as deep as you like!), integrated, and "homey." From day one, GUS has satisfied everyone's needs. I have no question that my children are understood - not just by the teachers and students, but members of the administration and faculty. It is an academically open minded and encouraging place, and thanks to GUS, both my kids have found their voice in ways that pleasantly surprised me. GUS is forward thinking in its mindset, but old fashioned in its process. Trustworthy and creative. It is a very good place.

Although the academics are top notch, there is just something missing there. The homework load is…read morewaaaaay to much (at least in the honors classes), and that causes social lives to deteriorate. Yes your son will learn more than he needs to know, but without a doubt it comes at a price (not to mention $16,000). I hate the administration. They just are not very good. For instance, today they fired a teacher who was probably the best in the entire school. It was ugly and it occured in the middle of the school year. I consider that disgraceful. The athletics are top notch, and so if your son is an athlete you might consider St. John's. Overall, I would've given three stars, but after today's disgraceful and ugly firing, I have to give only two. It just reinforces my previous belief that the adminstration is incompetent. Not to mention many of the teachers are absolutely horrible to their students, (i.e. teachers giving kids the finger, calling them names, etc.) My youngest son will not be attending.
