The steep climbs up and down the mountain were incredibly challenging. At one point, I even slipped and slid down part of the trail but thankfully managed to do so gracefully without hurting myself. Being from Florida, I was definitely not accustomed to the elevation gain I was about to face. There were plenty of moments throughout the hike where I questioned why I signed up for this challenge, but pushing through and ultimately finishing made it all worth it. Having the bragging rights to say I conquered this terrain feels incredibly rewarding. That day, I didn't notice much floral life, and most of the critters seemed to be hiding--likely due to the large number of people participating in the hike. That said, I was still lucky enough to spot a rattlesnake and a black racer, which made the experience even more memorable. There were a few noteworthy areas worth stopping for, including an open area near a dam‑like structure and several peaceful river and creek spots along the route. While the park is absolutely massive and I know there was so much left unexplored, the 23 miles I trekked over 9 hours was more than enough for one day. If I find myself back in the area, I might just dare to return and explore some of the parts of the park I didn't get to see. Truly a beautiful park and an incredible asset for those who live nearby and get to enjoy it regularly.

Early April, 2025. Burchfield Branch Park Campground, near Brookwood, Alabama, is administered by…read morethe US Army Corps of Engineers. It is open to the public, with advance reservations required and made through Recreation.gov. Burchfield is near Holt Lake on the Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway, and offers camping, boating, swimming, a large playground, picnicking, and more. The campground has 36 sites, most with electric and water hookups; tent camping is also allowed. There are also showers, a dump station, and trash receptacles. We camped at picturesque site #2, a back-in site along the Warrior River. The site was 45' long and paved, with a picnic table and electric and water hookups. No issues for us to access this site in a 20' class B, but it might have been challenging to maneuver in a large RV. Many sites are tight and close together, but we still had privacy as the sites on both sides of us were empty. The price was excellent, $28 with hook ups, and only $14 for holders of the NPS Senior Pass. We regrettably stayed here for only one night, which was an error in planning on our part. We were traveling between Montgomery and Birmingham, AL, not fully appreciating how remote and off the beaten path this campground is. It's many, many miles off the interstate, requires you to travel down many narrow roads, and is far, far away from cell service and basic amenities (groceries, gasoline, restaurants, etc.). Our journey also took us through miles and miles of desolate land that is being mined. And, did I mention that it was pouring rain for hours of our journey? This resulted in a very wet campground so we cocooned in our RV, not really enjoying our surroundings or what the campground offered. We were on our way to Birmingham the following morning. In retrospect, we should've stayed closer to Birmingham, or at least stayed longer to enjoy the campground. Be sure to note that advanced reservations are required, and the gate is locked at night for safety so be sure to arrive before closing. The coordinates for the park are: 33.43896,-87.36165.

The Tourway Inn of Birmingham, Alabama This was the most…read moredisgusting motel I've ever seen in real life. We didn't last 30 minutes in there before we had to get out. We walked in and there was hardened candy/ caramel on the comforter. The pillows were brown and stained. There was black strands of hair on the floor and pieces of the wall chipping/ dust atop every surface. There was blood in the toilet. This was the most unsanitary, disgusting place we've ever laid eyes on in real life. I wish I knew how to contact Gordon Ramsey from hotel nightmares cause he'd get a kick out of this place. I confronted the maid and she looked me in the eyes and said, "I don't see how it's dirty, I just cleaned this room myself".... Good luck if you stay here. I promise even if you're on a strict budget you'd do better sleeping in the car in a parking garage rather than spending your money here. It's probably safer in your car, too

I understand that not every hotel is a 5 star accommodation. I also understand that you typically…read moreget what you pay for. There are a wide range of hotels for many individual needs. You would normally choose to stay at a hotel based on those needs. You may only need a bed for the night, so other amenities might night matter. You may be staying a while so other things may be more important. This hotel is in the middle of nowhere. Nothing around it. All other businesses of any type are either an exit or two BEFORE, or an exit or two AFTER the exit where this place is. I can't decide if this hotel was built for visitors going to the automotive plant across the highway, so it doesn't get much business OR it was built thinking the plant would attract more businesses and it never did. Either way, there's nothing around. I work on the road and stay in hotels about 85% of the year. I stayed here because I was contacted at the automotive plant for a short while. I saw the mixed reviews but took the chance. I regretted my decision. It would have been worth the added drive to stay at a branded hotel at another exit. Over all the room served it's purpose. It was stayable. So it gets 2 stars. Not anymore though. The photos other Yelpers posted were pretty accurate. I'm sure rooms are hit and miss as to how bad. I only took pics of breakfast. With nothing else around for food options, the hotel's breakfast was my only choice. I even tried to take into account the whole COVID thing, while trying to wrap my head around their decision to make Hotpockets their breakfast. This was the icing on the cake for me. I had to put up a review. The idea that there may be others like me, staying here out of necessity, that may make a better decision based on my review. Save yourself fellow Yelpers! Travel farther for better options!
