The Dallas Observer ran an article about several hidden gems here in the Oak Cliff area. Being a…read morecurious foodie and taco aficionado, I just had to try out this listed restaurant.
Located on Westmoreland Avenue, South of Jefferson, just a stone's throw from the main road, it is a quiet and unassuming Mexican restaurant from the outside, with half a dozen parking spots at most. There are 3 humble commercial buildings standing by themselves, with established Oak Cliff houses dotting the landscape. This is a laid back eatery with old fashion service and delicious food.
Once inside, the red painted walls kinda of get your attention and wake you up. I sauntered up to the main food counter and looked over their menu. Both ladies in attendance were very sweet and helpful. My Spanish is not so good, and their English is decent enough to understand, so I was able to adequately order 3 different tacos: beef, chicken, and pork.
I grabbed a seat and waited as my meal was being freshly prepared. A few minutes later, one of the nice ladies brought my food to my table with 2 home made salsas, napkins, and fork. The corn tortillas I ordered are made fresh and were such a welcomed delight, they just melted in my mouth. WOW!! That alone was a real treat. The beef taco was just ok...not enough seasonings, but bits of potato gave it a nice texture. The chicken taco was very tender, but kinda bland too, and was hoping for something more creative. Now that pork taco was a perfect Bo Derek 10 honey. Oh yeah. It was lightly shredded pork, tender but crispy, full of texture and happy flavors. Yum for days. I have daydreams of eating plate fulls of those perfect 10 pork tacos right into a food coma. Yes please.
When I tried the green salsa, it had some nice medium heat and just brought the tacos alive with the burst of vibrant chili!! As an ever brave Gringa hoping to develop my chili tolerance, I dabbed my finger into the red sauce on my plate....whoa my little chili pepper amigo!! It's heat index was a smidge too much CALIENTE for my way empty belly and taste buds. But it had a nice flavor, so I am going have to work on getting use to that heat. Lots of rice milk por favor.
And to my surprise, my food was not dressed like the usually street taco fare of fresh chopped onions and cilantro with wedges of lime. Instead there was a side of lettuce with fresh tomatoes. Something different. I can dig it.
Overall, I really liked my food and great service, my food was $6 and tipped $2, so it very affordable. Of course I most definitely will be back to enjoy more authentic Mexican food. Ole!!
