Admission prices are ridiculous. I know people that flat out refuse to pay and just walk in. Horrible gyms and refs.

Recess Time organizes dodgeball and bowling leagues in addition to kickball, and eventually there will be ping-pong. They make all the schedules, setup the fields, and coordinate the volunteer officials. All you have to do is bring your "A" game. The best part is they've acquired beer and wine permits for the parks! And in case you're wondering, wine and kickball are a fine pairing (I asked my boy Trav @ Garrison's). The second-best part is that even if your friends are too lazy, or uncoordinated, or don't exist, you can still be part of a team through "free agency." So if you're looking for a way to meet people and/or an excuse to get off the couch, definitely check out Recess Time. BTW, my team, Kick & Scream, kicked some butt today. Undefeated...1-0 baby!!!

I had a blast practicing and scrimmaging against these guys in the summer before last...'06. It was like my version of two-a-days, making up for the ones I missed in high school. But as soon as the regular season began, it appeared our team was doomed. We were given the team name "Vultures," but it should have been the Raiders. Hell, we were awful on offense, decent on defense and wore black! When it comes to pickup/backyard sports, I get an ego cause i believe - along with many others - that I'm a playmaker. Unfortunately, I never got my chance to shine in Pac West. With the way the teams were rigged via the "draft," we were a team without any leadership or organization, beings all the primier veterans went to the commissioner's squad. In the course of the off-season/"training camp," I went from one of the highest selected quarterbacks, to a wide receiver, to a backup safety. After two games, I decided I wasn't in the business of busting my butt for absolutely nothing. I landed on Injured Reserve, thus officially ending my rookie season. After all the drama and rigging in Pac West during my only year, I've retained ill feelings towards the commish and his league. But because, unlike Portland Football, I don't have to recruit my own players, I might be forced to play another rookie year make-up in the future. Hopefully it won't be as Belichick'd as it was before.

Every team has equal opportunity to draft league veterans or rookies that are excellent athletes. It sounds more like you are a wanna be player that thought you were somebody until you played against guys with great athletic abilities. This league is not like you and your friends playing a pick up game in the back yard. I have been out to Pac West for the last six years and i would recommend the league to anybody that wants to play football and have fun. The commissioner of Pac West is very committed to his league and his players unlike the commissioner that stared the league. At least the current commissioner has made something out of nothing. The commissioner has secured very nice turf fields for the league to play on. Last of all, the website speaks for itself!

In my opinion, their loss. This club is not only the best bang for your buck in Clark County with all the ammenities it offers but management and whole staff (incl Jody) do a great job. Everyone is nice and helpful. Someone mentioned VTC for tennis, I am still a member there and like the classes and pros a lot, but it's next to impossible to get a court. And while the annual dues my be low, it's very expensive overall. CGM has several days of free play for men and women, they provide balls for our tennis matches and Carlos & Emory are just the best. I love the fact that it is private and they limit the membership so we can all use the facility for tennis, pickleball, gym, pools, saunas, classes, etc., when we want.

The rudeness…read moreof Jody and the general ghosting by management whenever there is a problem makes VTC a much better choice for a serious tennis player. The best proof is management knows that Jody is a problem for the members (see the posts here), but doesn't care. Sort of sad because Carlos and his group are really trying. Knew the former owners, and can tell you don wouldn't have put up with it (now both deceased). Pretty well known person who gets around who normally you wouldn't want to offend too much, but you reap what you sow.

Fuhgetabout the gym... Rock the boat, baby!…read more Most Portlanders, if they know anything about dragon boats, know the big Portland/Kaohsiung Rose Festival races, with the opulent, dragon-headed boats, the flag catching and the sprawling, boisterous crowds. But all that happens between April and June. And then *poof* it's all over and the heavy Taiwanese boats are stashed away beneath the Hi-Hat Restaurant for another year. The real juice of Portland's dragon boating milieu -- where teams train year-round and often go to national and world championships -- is the paddler-run DragonSports USA. A single dragon boat club has maybe 25 or 30 members and can't afford to buy, moor or maintain the 12-meter craft. So DragonSports USA was formed to provide all of Portland with access to sleek Hong Kong-stye dragon boats for recreational and team uses. And since 1997 they've been right downtown at Riverplace, where everybody can get to them. What really makes DragonSports rock is the level of volunteer commitment. With 8 boats and 2 races each year to run, an undertaking like this could cost a bundle. But when it's time to move a boat or organize a competition, it's all hands on deck. Because there isn't a big staff to support (just the ever-heroic Ayla) a lifetime membership in DragonSports costs $40 and then a team rental for a 22 -person boat is $22 per hour. Individuals can paddle at open practices for -- get this -- $25 per quarter. Yes, $40 up front and $100 per year. Take that to your gym and see if they'll match the price. And even if they do, when did you ever see people leaving spin class with the kind of goofy grins you find on those soggy people trodding up the boat ramp at Riverplace?

From the owner: DragonSports USA is a non-profit dragon boat paddling club located in Portland, Oregon.read more

With that said, I'm not a proper resident of the neighborhood. I don't belong to the HOA, and I'm not eligible to access the swimming pool or tennis courts (as far as I understand it!). This is not terribly surprising, given the fact that it's a pool in the middle of the neighborhood, but it just feels so...open! My daughter is always interested in seeing the parts we're not allowed to see. She looks at them all the time on the school bus going in and out of school. So what that leaves us to access is the playground. Frankly, it's not great. The Oak Hills Elementary playground is a stone's throw away and WAY better...in terms of quality, openness, and monkey bar variety, and whatever other criteria you can think of to rate a playground. I suspect that if I were a proper resident of the Oak Hills neighborhood, I'd rate this more highly. I suspect that the pool is fun and the tennis is a delight. I'm just bummed that I'm not allowed to find out.

I guess I am aging myself when I compare this sport to when women's ice hockey came on the scene sometime in the eighties. I guess at first, it was a bit confusing because I did not do my due diligence and research on the rules of how to play and what the calls were from the referees. What was good though was that during halftime, they did have some volunteers who came by each seated section to ask if anyone had any questions about the game. I raised my hand and asked a lot of questions. The person was very thorough and explained the game very well. Once the second half started, I became more glued to watching the game instead of surveying the merch booth across the way of where I was sitting or the beer/snack line. Yes, they do sell merch, snacks, and some adult beverages as well as the unleaded drinks. Overall it was a fun time. Not sure if I would get into this sport and go to more games but definitely enjoyable enough for me to sit through this one whole game. As for the parking and getting into the venue, see my previous review of parking for Oaks Amusement Park. Kind of a nightmare for parking and not sure yet if it's kryptonite for me to return to the venue to see another game. I did purchase tickets at the door and got there 30 min early.
