They have the highest rating with the plastic decking trex company for installing. They gave us a very fair price to do our deck. They can do just about any job. I contacted Hook Home to have them replace and stain our deck. I found Hook Home unreliable not only in terms of communication but also with deck staining. I emailed Hook Home several questions after they came to review my deck and to give me an estimate on March 15. I sent a follow-up email on March 23, with no estimate. The estimate did not come until April 5. I asked questions about Trex vs. treated lumber, etc, to ensure I understood our options. Their answer was ambiguous. The deck build went well, and Shawn Hook is very talented at building decks. I think it is a true shame that his coworkers and their unprofessionalism overshadow his craftmanship. Once the deck staining was scheduled, Lindsay Hook told me on August 2 via email that someone would come out with different shades of color close to the one we selected to test on the deck. This NEVER happened. The Thursday before Labor Day Weekend, Lindsey told us that we had to get the stain, and Hook pretended as if they had never sent that email. I pointed out that someone was supposed to test the colors in the email. I had to call Sunday night to express concern as no one emailed us back. Lindsay Hook said over the phone, "this isn't fair; I have family over." There was no focus on professionalism or their business. I am Deaf, and I had to call through a relay system, so I saved this conversation as proof of how Lindsay spoke. I am glad to share the transcript and emails as documentation. Following the deck staining, we discovered stain splatter all over the side of our home, all over our new hasta plants, and the stain job was very splotchy and poorly done. Also, the two men said they had to come inside to bring their ladders up. This was never communicated to me [the deck build I did not have to be home and was told I did not need to be home], and this was a big problem as I work a lot. They expected me to revolve my work schedule around theirs. I asked for the deck to be restained and fixed. Up until now, I had been communicating mainly with Shawn and Lindsay. Randall Hook then stepped in for this, and he is obnoxious! He said that we were contracted for only one layer of stain and that "their project is done." We never got a contract only a proposal and I had to send him the August 2nd email to show him what Lindsay stated. I also asked for the stain splatter to be cleaned up. They came back to restain the deck, it looks better now. Hook partially cleaned up the stain splatter on our home. Randall Hook refused to go to our house to see the residual stain spots. To compromise, we asked for $300 off since we have to replace our plants and get a professional power washer to fix our siding. They only compromised on $150 off because that is how much they charge for power washing. If you have all the time and patience in this world, only email them, never call them, be persistent, stay on top of every detail and get a paper trail of everything. Well I have to say read the reviews posted before me on google they aren't lying. These gentlemen came over and took down what I wanted done to my kitchen and said I about a week will get back to you with a quote. Its been over 2 weeks. Don't bother emailing them or calling them they wouldn't not respond. It's sad I am posting this. I wasted a full 2 weeks to hear back and nothing so don't waste your time with these guys. read more

They were supposed to come out in August for a job. On the day they were supposed to arrive they never showed. They stated their crew was out sick. They later said most of their crew had quit and they were short workers, said they would come out in December to start work. On the day they were supposed to start, again, they didn't show, and no phone call. I had to text them. They later called 3 hours later and said again, their crew was out sick. What a complete waste of time. They don't return phone calls or emails either. read more

We had to have some miscellaneous home projects done and we couldn't be more please with the work that was done by Hook! Porch steps, garage painting and cedar siding repairs were all done perfectly and paint match ups were perfect. We will definitely use the again in the future and recommend them to others. read more

This review is not about any actual work performed by Hook Home Maintenance. That is because it never got to that point, and this is what I want to review. After an email and follow-up call, owner Randy did stop by to take a look at four small projects we needed completed. After waiting several days past the promised estimate, it did arrive via email. We had agreed that I would purchase a light fixture that Randy would install. However, he included $80 in his estimate for the light fixture. I purchased the fixture for under $40 and emailed him that the estimate looked fine with the exception of the $80 for the light fixture. I asked that he remove that cost and I approved everything else. That was some time ago. To date, no reply from Randy. Did he object to removing $80 from his estimate? Monetarily did this make it not worthwhile for him to do the job and he wrote me off his list? Did he get a bigger, better job in the meantime and we sank to the bottom of his list? Randy, silence is not golden! I cannot review the quality of work since none was performed. I can comment on the quality of customer treatment and Hook Home Maintenance reliability. Both get a big ZERO. I do not recommend doing business with Randy Hook. read more

I had Randy out to quote 4 different jobs, but two specifically that I was looking to have done right away. He said to give him a week or so to figure up the estimates. After around ten days of not hearing anything, I called. No one answered, so I left a voice mail. No one ever got back to me. Now, it's been almost two months, and I've never heard anything back from them. If he wasn't interested in doing the jobs, he could have informed me of that in the first place. We recently used them for two small jobs - replacing some bulbs in a light fixture in our two-story high living room (I'm not climbing that high) and replacing the mechanism in a toilet. They responded to our request quickly, came out and looked at the jobs right away, and did the work exactly when they said they would. Good work, neat and clean, and reasonably priced. Would definitely use them again. read more

Don't trust your estimate from Hook! We had a project done by Hook, and the estimate was 20% less than the actual cost. Obviously, this is an unfair business practice, and while we are happy with the end product, the estimate should closely mirror the invoice. We should have at least been notified prior to the project when the materials were purchased when the cost exceeded the estimate. Needless to say, we will never use Hook again, as our trust is diminished. read more

There are plenty of competent contractors, Hook Home Maintenance is not one of them. When I hired Hook Home Maintenance they told me the project would take three weeks at a cost of $41.5k. It took 13 weeks (with Lindsay telling me "2 more weeks" starting at week six), and the final bill was $75.9K (YES, that is an increase of 83%). The majority of the overage being unexplained labor -materials were over by $7.1K, labor was over by $27.3. The project was not only grossly underestimated, but the additional 10 weeks cost listing the house during a seller's market that was busiest when the house was supposed to be complete. Since completion was in mid-May instead of the beginning of March, additional funds were necessary to paint the outside of the house, which was never part of the original project (No, I did not have Hook paint the outside). Hook's incompetency cost me addition money in many areas. Upon inspection of Hook's work... * The kitchen rendering that was provided did not match what was installed * There was damage to the kitchen cabinets when they were installed * The new toilet in the upstairs bath was not functioning * Shelves were missing from the kitchen pantry and laundry room and were not in the house * Pre-painted trim was cut and raw wood was left exposed * Prep work prior to painting (filling holes and dents) was not done and there was paint on the new hardwood floors, the fireplace stone, etc. (Ironically, the estimate to paint was the only cost that Randy advised me was over budget and after asking how much it was going to be over, I never received a revised estimate, just an invoice.) * The wood counter tops in the kitchen were a different wood than the laundry room counter tops * I was charged for six (6) hours of cleaning that was done two weeks prior to Hook completing the project. Additional funds were used for a final cleaning. Overages and expenditures as the project was under way were not conveyed and when specifically asked about costs and time lines, updated cost estimates were not provided and updated time estimates were inaccurate. The amount of money allocated for this project was clearly communicated at the beginning of the project and Shawn assured that he thought there would be savings in some of the discounts provided by Lowes for materials. An opportunity to control costs was not provided as Hook Home Maintenance continued to send invoices with unexplained labor costs. The majority of Hook's work was acceptable, but not worth the overage in cost, time and aggravation. There are plenty of competent contractors out there. Hook Home Maintenance is not one of them. read more
