Serendipity by definition is the good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries. My wife and I settled on the notion that we would need to replace our builder grade PT deck last year from when we built our home originally 10 yrs ago. As such, We met with about 3 well known design and consultative builders in southern New Hampshire. In the good fortune that a good friend, John was having his deck remodeled by Hook and Ladder. We knew as soon as we saw their quality and craftsmanship, attention to detail and incredibly talented team. Hook and Ladder was the only team that shared our excitement, similar vision and know how to execute drawn on many years of experience. Hook and Ladder Contracting service also had one of the most detail and professional proposals I've seen that outlined detailed pictures, timelines, expectations, materials and you can tell a substantial amount of time went into the development and detailed plan of their deck construction. Tom was confident, professional, his team had very new and well maintained tools, they all were highly punctual, clean, easy to converse with and genuinely shared their passion and well communicated everyday. Business Owner: Tom was present everyday, assisted with running out to supply his team on whatever they needed to be successful every day. What was even more impressive , Tom went as far as researching our replacement siding from an outside company (Harvey) to match perfectly our existing siding. There were no stones unturned when the project was through and no 'punch list' or IOUs. Our deck was flawlessly designed and built based on his proposal. Tom was recommended to us by another contractor (who noticed our failing deck)- his reputation is so good, he is known across several trades! Long story short, Tom and his team saved our deck- they did an exceptional job and we highly recommend them. We were in a situation where our deck was sinking off the house, was never properly built to begin with, and it was rotting to the point of being a safety hazard. We had gotten a couple of quotes for an all new Trex deck, and the price tag was simply too high to fit into our budget at the time. We needed a team to try and salvage the deck we had, so we could save for the new deck, but we spoke with several different contractors who said it was out of their purview. Not for Tom and his team!! They came up with a solution within minutes of looking the wreck over- they proposed to demolish half of our massive deck, reinforce the frame and add new boards to what remained. This was something no other contractor we had spoken with had thought of! Tom and his team John and Gary were great. They were extremely knowledgeable, helpful and perfect professionals. They arrived to the job on time, and finished within the original time frame promised. Tom was extremely reasonable on price, even when we needed to get more material than originally planned. He really understood our needs and situation and delivered 110%. The team made sure every board was perfect, and every step was completed with care. They were polite, friendly and left the job site clean. We are extremely happy with our resuscitated "new" deck, it is simply beautiful and solid as a rock. Lack of follow through or service delivery after the construction. Several unresolved issues.

The night before closing ony home, my ex-husband hammered out one of the posts to my deck (and did other damage). Tom cane over after hours to examine the damage, provide a fair estimate, and promise he could replace it the next day. He did so, and the craftsmanship and work were PERFECT. I hired Tom April 14th to replace my aging deck and let him know that we wanted to get it done sooner rather than later. He gave us mid-June as a timeframe and we agreed. All seemed fine, and about a month later he told us that the price of lumber was rising and we should purchase the lumber now, so we paid 6K to the lumber company for about 5k worth of lumber. We got delivered on May 18th, minus some of the decking boards. I would touch base about once week to see where we are in the queue and he stated that June was still the timeframe. Fast forward a few weeks to mid-June, the original timeframe, and he was now refusing to give me even a rough date? He didn't want to talk on the phone...just text. I left Tom a respectful voicemail after trying to call him about 2 seconds after a text from him. I explained that all we were looking for was a rough date so we can plan our summer. He texted me back and said that he understood that we were looking for a date but continued on with excuses on the weather, lack of help, customers changing jobs, etc. but he did give us somewhat of a date. I thanked him for the reply and a rough date. The following evening at 9:30pm he sent a text to me stating that he decided he was not going to do the job after all because "I'm confident that you and I are not compatible to work together..." I read the text, not really believing it, and replied that I was surprised and we should talk tomorrow. Nope...he said he did not want to talk and he made his decision. My wife went to bed crying that evening because all she wanted was a new deck she could use. She has health issues, doesn't get out much and our current deck is not safe. He did give us the option to keep the lumber, which as warping at this point and the concrete has been sitting outside the whole time, and I said I didn't want it and to have it removed. he did say that I would get a full refund. At least he followed through with that part and I did eventually get a refund. Now our backyard has huge bare spots and we are at square one again. During this Tom did not apologize even ONCE for his cancelling and was very arrogant. I guess that is his true color. Tom Schofield, from Hook and Ladder, may do good work if you decide to wait for him, but he was taking on larger jobs before mine and when pressed, he just quits because he knows there is a lot of work out there. Tom...you really disappointed us and the way you handled the situation was absolutely horrible! I would STEER clear of this contractor and find a more professional one that is not arrogant and actually has some empathy for his fellow man! read more

My grandparents contracted with this company to redo their deck. They were supposed to start last Thursday and didn't start until Friday because of the weather. I understand that it is hot, but they didn't work full days so a 5 day project was incomplete on day 5. My mom and uncle both looked at the deck that had been done so far and noticed issues which Tom agreed with. Some of the issues were corrected yesterday, but may issues remained this morning. When they were pointed out, Tom packed up his crew and materials and left, without completing the job. My grandmother now has a 7 foot deck with NO stairs and some shoddy work. My grandmother who has a bad back, knees and hips has to now go down two flights of stairs to the basement and up through the bulkhead steps just to get into her yard. read more
