I used to walk home through here all the time, the quiet avenue of trees and small plaques always making me think of the people they represented and the others who chose to remember them.
Established in 1918-1919 to reflect how this little town was affected by the loss of so many in WWI, this seems to be the best kind of war memorial. One that gently honours the individuals, and provides a place to think and remember. I don't know how many people really notice the plaques at the bottom of the beautiful trees, and several are missing, but when you think of how just about every little town in Australia has a war memorial of some sort or another, it's sobering.
Besides this, it's a beautiful little walk, when the rain's been and the mist's hanging low, toadstool rings pop up under the pines, and it's like walking through a cloud. read more
